Download or read book The Singapore Economy Reconsidered written by Lawrence B. Krause and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study re-examines some of the issues, challenges and policy options facing the Singapore economy in the light of the 1985–86 recession. Particular attention is paid towards reappraising the role of the government as an entrepreneur in economic activity, in macro-economic management, in savings and investment, and in the labour market. This is done in the context of and alongside an assessment of Singapore’s linkages with the global economy and its future comparative advantage in a dynamic international environment.

Book The End of the Asian Model

Download or read book The End of the Asian Model written by Holger Henke and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-03-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the economic crisis in Asia, which unfolded in recent years, the development ‘model’ on which the phenomenal earlier success of several countries in the region was built requires increasing scrutiny. This anthology questions the validity of the notion promoted by some observers and international financial organizations that there is a universally applicable model of industrialization common to Asian countries. A number of senior and highly regarded Asia specialists are taking a critical look at the various development experiences of several (and some often neglected) Asian countries and evaluate their experiences in a comparative perspective. Comparing the analyses of countries such as Mongolia, the Pacific Islands, or Sri Lanka with Singapore, South Korea and other countries of the region leads the editors of this volume to the conclusion that the fashionable talk about a ‘model’ is not justified and that the picture is much more complex.

Book OECD Economic Surveys Switzerland 2019

Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys Switzerland 2019 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swiss citizens continue to enjoy high living standards on a range of dimensions. Economic growth has slowed but the healthy labour market is still supporting incomes and consumption. However, risks to the outlook are building. Monetary policy has been very accommodative but low interest rates are adding to financial risks. Fiscal policy is sound and debt low. There is scope to make greater use of available fiscal space. Adapting to population ageing is becoming pressing. This trend, along with digital transformation, will bring new opportunities for the economy and society, but challenges as well. Policies have not kept up with rising life expectancy, particularly the statutory retirement age. Updating the pension system and lowering barriers to working longer would ensure that workers continue to receive adequate incomes during retirement.

Book Business Government and Labor

Download or read book Business Government and Labor written by Linda Y C Lim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business, Government and Labor in the Economic Development of Singapore and Southeast Asia analyzes the inter-linked and evolving roles of private sector business, government public policy, and labor markets in the economic development of Singapore and its Southeast Asian neighborhood. It does this through 16 essays written by Prof. Linda Y C Lim, an early and long-established scholar of these subjects, and published over a 35-year period. For Singapore, often considered the world's most successful economy, the essays highlight the determining role of government's industrial and social policy through to the present day, when the growth model of the past faces many external market and domestic resource constraints. In the rest of Southeast Asia, in contrast, the essays explore how private sector business, dominated by the locally-domiciled ethnic Chinese minority, thrived and drove economic growth in underdeveloped markets with imperfect institutions, and consider if and how this might change with China's increasing presence in the regional economy. A final set of essays analyzes the forces underlying women's employment, from labor-intensive Southeast Asian export factories in the 1980s to Singapore's foreign-labor-dependent economy and its current productivity challenges. Taken together, the essays show how government, business and labor interact in the process of economic development.

Book In Search of East Asian D

Download or read book In Search of East Asian D written by Peter L. Berger, Hsin Huang Michael Hsiao and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of East Asian development experience to the less developed world crucially depends on whether an identifiable economic model underlies & largely explains the unquestionable economic success of the five nations of East Asia-Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, & Singapore-which are the subject of extensive analysis in this volume. If there is a model, is it transferable? There are two schools of thought on this question. Some believe that the explanation for East Asian economic success lies largely in the cultural realm: in values, institutional structures & social relations. Others maintain that economic success can largely be explained by the economic strategy these countries have adopted.

Book The Extent of Singapore s Investments Abroad

Download or read book The Extent of Singapore s Investments Abroad written by Samuel Bassey Okposin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume explores extreme openness of the Singaporean economy to international trade through the role of Foreign Direct Investment in Singapore and Singapore’s investments abroad. It provides much valuable insight to how changes in the economic and policy environments impacted on the individual Singapore-based firms and their decision making processes. The book is particularly strong in the manner in which the firm level material is linked to the overall outflow of capital, the macro-level conditions and the established theoretical explanations for the export of capital. Samuel Bassey Okposin has four aims: to examine the causes of direct investment in Singapore’s economy, to investigate the motivation for Singapore firms to invest abroad, to explain overseas direct investment from Singapore and to examine Singapore’s overseas direct investment strategies, strengths and weaknesses, considering if the current trend of outward direct investment will continue into the new millennium.
