Book excerpt: Quotes from this Book Spain brought nothing to the New World except the horse and Roman Catholicism.... The French wished to expand; the Spanish wished to hold on to everything they could; the Dutch wished to be left alone; the English planters wished to make money, at whose expense was irrelevant; and the English Government also wished to make money at the expense of the English planters in a chain of exploitation irrespective of place and people. ....Thus, the only way in which whites can protect their economic power is to accommodate to black political power which means the weakening of social distinctions associated with race. ....Its general, the Garveyite Africanist orientation did not sufficiently appreciate that it was impossible to restore a racial and tribal community and continuity violently broken for more than two hundred years. ....Jamaican Democratic Socialism and Guyanese Cooperative Socialism can be directly traced to the appeal to the trade unions for mass support....Party politics ante-dated organized unionism in Trinidad, thus Eric Williams' collective nationalism. ....Barbadian conservatism can be traced to its apparent socio-psychological difference from the other states of the area. ....The economy of the country floundered, and the country remained in tact by massive foreign borrowing from willing lenders.... There also seems to be a creeping social and moral malaise in the country. ..".we obviously will have to find some means whereby the problem of trade in the world is made the subject of political management by agreement." .... The intellectuals of the Caribbean are at arms with frustrations due to the lack of vision of their governments in implementing meaningful and cohesive policies for the national good. ....Even the concept of MDCs and LDCs is being questioned.... Conflict also exists between CARICOM states with different natural resource endowments like oil and gas rich Trinidad and Tobago and the Windward Islands over the banana issue. .... The question that must be asked is: Is CARICOM running behind the metaphoric bus? ....The Commonwealth Caribbean States should individually and collectively forge economic relations with Brazil in the vast area of the manufacturing of parts for various goods especially in light manufacturing.

Book The Haunting Past

Download or read book The Haunting Past written by Alvin O. Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2015. This book places in firm historical perspective the roots of Caribbean dependency, highlighting the ways in which the region has been and continues to be a pawn in Great Power politics and economics. The past is both haunting and daunting, seriously hampering the region's capacity to pursue an autonomous path. The author develops his argument by focusing on how politics, economics and race have shaped Caribbean history and contemporary life. Discussions and analysis include examples from the Anglophone, Spanish, French and Dutch speaking Caribbean islands and countries. Thompson also attempts to provide prescriptions that would free the region from the shackles of the past and place the countries on the path to independence.

Book The Challenge of Structural Adjustment in the Commonwealth Caribbean

Download or read book The Challenge of Structural Adjustment in the Commonwealth Caribbean written by Ramesh Ramsaran and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-06-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work analyzes recent economic performance in the Commonwealth Caribbean by examining the IMF/World Bank Structural Adjustment Package and its relation to the deteriorating economic and social conditions in this part of the world. Ramesh F. Ramsaran not only takes a critical look at structural adjustment as it has been applied in the Caribbean but also examines recent structural adjustment theory in general and some of its contradictions in practice. Ramsaran argues that if structural adjustment programs are to be effective with minimum social cost, their design must take into account the specific conditions of individual countries. This argument against the general application of policies and principles remains firm, despite the fact that international aid agencies in the 1980s did find general guidelines useful in particular situations. His analysis will be of interest to scholars and policy-makers in international and development economics and international finance and trade.

Book Persistent Underdevelopment

Download or read book Persistent Underdevelopment written by Jay Mandle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996, this insightful and informative text examines the post-emancipation and recent economic history of the Commonwealth Caribbean. Jay R. Mandle offers an explanation of the region’s continuing underdevelopment. Through the use of an analytical framework derived from the works of Marx and Kuznets, the book focuses attention on technological change as the driving force behind economic modernization. Persistent Underdevelopment begins by exploring how plantation agriculture had a limiting effect on industrial growth. Ultimately, plantation dominance receded; technological stagnation continued, however, and, under British colonial policy the Caribbean failed to modernise. The post-World War II era brought new efforts at modernisation through the economic policies of the left regimes of Manley, Burnham and Bishop. The concluding chapters point the way to policies that would enable the Caribbean to escape its current poverty and become an effective participant in world markets, finally achieving the goal of modern economic development.

It shows the impact of monetary policy on inflation and the importance of exchange rate regimes to the effectiveness of monetary policy in the region.
