Book excerpt: God & Money confronts the current dominant right wing Republican / evangelical Christian view that unfettered, market-driven capitalism and Christian faith and values are compatible. Drawing on such ethical luminaries as Reinhold Niebuhr, G.K. Chesterton, Peter Berger, and John Paul II, author Charles McDaniel shows that to reverse the current decline in public morality, capitalism must be balanced by enduring religious and moral values. Challenging the captivity of Christian culture by free market, global capitalism, McDaniel joins other Christian ethical visionaries in advocating a "redemptive economy," one that champions individual human dignity, true community, and the moral regeneration of cultural traditions in vital dialectic with the inevitable market capitalism of the contemporary world.

Download or read book What is Economic Justice written by Andrew Hartropp and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the language of economic justice is used right across the political spectrum today, there is no consensus about what it means. Secular perspectives are in deep and confusing disarray. This is of little help to the poor or the rich. Can the Bible do better? Most certainly, according to this book. Whereas secular approaches tend to focus either on justice in production and exchange (free trade versus fair trade) or justice in distribution (equality versus freedom), a biblically-rooted account shows that both of these aspects are central to economic justice. The book indicates how this understanding applies to contemporary topics such as the relationships between borrowers and lenders, and the use of monopoly power.

Download or read book Work in the Spirit written by Miroslav Volf and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-04-27 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the rise of modern industrial society, work has come to pervade and rule the lives of men and women. Although there have been many popular books and church documents on on the Christian understanding of work, this is the first scholarly effort to articulate a developed Protestant theology of work. In Work in the Spirit, Miroslav Volf interprets work from a new perspective - in terms of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. He exhaustively explores the nature of work in both capitalist and socialist societies and considers a variety of work, including industrial, agricultural, medical, political, and artistic work. Examining the importance of alienation in work in industrial and information societies (particularly in the relation of workers to management and technology), he analyzes various forms of such alienation, and elucidates the character of humane work. On the basis of the ÒpneumatologicalÓ theology of work that he develops, Volf rejects the traditional Protestant understanding of work as vocation, and takes the concept of charisma as the cornerstone for his theological reflection on work. He denies that one is ÒcalledÓ to do a particular work irrespective of one's inclinations, and asserts, instead, that it is our privilege to do the kind of work for which God's spirit has gifted us. All human work done in accordance with the will of God, Volf argues, is cooperation with God in the preservation and transformation of the world.

Book NIV Application Commentary

Download or read book NIV Application Commentary written by Craig L. Blomberg and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 1995 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from the twentieth century to the first century. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable -- but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into modern context. It explains not only what the Bible means but also how it can speak powerfully today.

Book excerpt: Evangelicals today probably have more political influence in the United States than at any time in the last century--but they might not be certain what to do with it. It has been difficult to develop a unified voice on pressing issues such as social justice and moral renewal. Bestselling author and theologian Ron Sider offers a biblically grounded, factually rooted, Christian approach to politics that cuts across ideological divides. Shaped by a careful study of society, this book will guide readers into more thoughtful and effective political activity. It addresses perennially tough questions that often divide the church and includes a case study of the federal deficit debate. Practical, balanced, and nonpartisan, this book will be a welcome resource during the 2012 presidential race. This is a revised version of what was previously published as The Scandal of Evangelical Politics.

Book Church and State in Historical Perspective

Download or read book Church and State in Historical Perspective written by James E. Wood and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2005-05-30 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of church and state is one intimately associated with the history of Christianity and Western civilization. However, the subject is one that is by no means limited to any one religious tradition, civilization, or period of history. Rather, it is a subject that has historical and universal significance to all cultures and religious traditions throughout the world. It is simply undeniable that religion has been, and remains, a powerful force in the making and shaping of cultures, civilizations, nations, and empires. For this reason, this volume addresses the broader perspectives of religion and the state in the ancient world, as well as in the biblical world of Judaism and Christianity, and in other religious traditions than Christianity. Attention is given to general works on church and state that treat the subject broadly, not limited to any particular nation, religious tradition, or single aspect of church-state relations. Additionally, there is material on major topics integrally related to church and state, such as civil disobedience, civil religion, liberation theology, patriotism, and nationalism. Finally, sources are included on religion in international affairs and interfaith relations, both necessarily linked to the subject of church and state, as well as religion and the economic order; religion and human rights and the effect of religion on war and peace.
