Book Economic Consequences of Lower Military Spending

Download or read book Economic Consequences of Lower Military Spending written by Tamim A. Bayoumi and published by . This book was released on 1993-03 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IMF MULTIMOD model is used to trace the economic impact of a 20 percent reduction in world military expenditures. GDP falls in the short run, however private consumption and investment rise, leading to an increase in GDP in the medium and long run. The estimated gains to economic welfare are substantial, particularly for developing countries, although most of these gains are realized in the long run. A positive international economic externality is found to exist, implying that for any given country the economic gains from a coordinated reduction in military expenditures exceed the gains from a unilateral reduction.

Book Military Expansion Economic Decline

Download or read book Military Expansion Economic Decline written by R.W. DeGrasse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By assessing the costs and benefits of military spending, the authors provide a "second opinion" on the subject of military economics. While advocates of increased military spending often stress the positive effects of the Pentagon on the economy, there has been little systematic summary of the "opportunity costs" that society pays for a large military establishment. This book fills that gap.

Book The Peace Dividend

Download or read book The Peace Dividend written by Delano Villanueva and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-05-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although conventional wisdom suggests that reducing military spending may improve a country’s economic growth performance, empirical studies have produced ambiguous results. This paper extends a standard growth model and estimates it using techniques that exploit both cross-section and time-series dimensions of available data to obtain consistent estimates of the growth-retarding effects of military spending via its adverse impact on capital formation and resource allocation. Model simulations suggest that a substantial long-run “Peace Dividend”--in the form of higher capacity output--may result from: (i) markedly lower military expenditure levels achieved in most regions during the late 1980s; and (ii) further military spending cuts that would be possible in the future if a global peace could be secured.

Book Defense Spending Natural Resources and Conflict

Download or read book Defense Spending Natural Resources and Conflict written by Christos Kollias and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an intellectual contribution of policy scientists and researchers from different academic institutions in different parts of the world. The Arab Spring, the rise of ISIS and terrorism ignite the debate on studying conflict and natural resources. Uniquely, the book discusses the sources of the conflicts and the institutions that are managing the conflicts. The natural resources, defense spending, conflict and human welfare are intertwined. In support of the ‘resource curse’ hypothesis, the book shows that an abundance of natural resources, particularly oil, encourages an increase in military spending and lower economic growth. In addition, the good economic and political institutions do reduce the hazard of conflict; and strong political institutions for checks and balances appear to weaken the impact of natural resources on conflicts. The book also examines the relationship between defense and social welfare expenditures – specifically, health and education. Shedding light on the complicated nature of the relationship between defense spending, inequality, and types of political and welfare regimes gives us a deeper understanding of the type of democratic systems that will likely improve social welfare. In studying the political economy of defense spending, the book shows the link between public opinion toward defense spending and voters' support for candidates. The analysis shows that party identification or having a vested interest in defense industries do correlate with a preference for increasing defense spending. This book was published as a special issue of Defence and Peace Economics.
