Book Economic Conditions in the Philippines

Download or read book Economic Conditions in the Philippines written by Hugo H. Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Conditions in the Philippines This book is written for beginners in the study of economic conditions in the Philippines. Its object is to explain the economic position of the Filipinos in their own Islands and in the world in general, and to state, analyze, and discuss economic conditions found here. Theoretic economics enter into this discussion only as subordinate to and explanatory of actual fact. It is believed that this study will give to students an idea of actual economic conditions existing in the Philippines and a comparative idea of those found in other countries, and at the same time will result in a knowledge of the natural laws upon which all economic discussion and reasoning must be based. Throughout the book the data obtained from special economic reports by teachers are presented in collective form. For reference purposes, information which warrants special notice is credited to the teacher who furnished it. I am also indebted to the following persons for reviewing the portions of the manuscript which treat subjects in which they are particularly interested. From the Bureau of Agriculture: Mr. Otis W. Excerpt: ...given possession of the land for another year, so that he may pay off the debt to the landlord. In Zambales advances of palay and money at high rates of interest are made, as in the kasama system. 1 In Pampanga the large landowners rent tracts of considerable area to tenants, who in turn become landlords by subleasing the parcel to other tenants. The rent in this case is usually money. (From the economic report submitted by Mrs. Lois Stewart Osborn.) In Iloilo the sugar land is sometimes rented for cash at approximately eight pesos a hectare, this rental including the use of the mill and all the buildings on the land. Such large rented areas are worked by either the proprietary or the share system. 2 Reports of Walter K. Perret and Horatio Smith. 3 From economic report of Fred T. Lawrence. 4 Reports of M. M. Boney and R. G. McLeod. SHARE SYSTEMS In the three systems just described the possessor of the land is the only person directly interested in the amount of the crop. A large part of the cultivated area of the Philippines is leased on shares, by an arrangement in which the owner of the land and the tiller of the soil are different persons, but both are directly interested in the amount of the crop. In some regions and under certain circumstances the share tenants are comparatively free in action; in others they are to a greater or less extent under the direction and supervision of the landlord, not only in matters pertaining to the tilling of the soil, but in family and everyday affairs. The Manorial System The manorial system approaches that which existed in Europe at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Philippines. territorial serfs, bound to the land to perform certain fixed services, and they were not destitute of rights, in...

Book Poverty in the Philippines

Download or read book Poverty in the Philippines written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of the global financial crisis and rising food, fuel, and commodity prices, addressing poverty and inequality in the Philippines remains a challenge. The proportion of households living below the official poverty line has declined slowly and unevenly in the past four decades, and poverty reduction has been much slower than in neighboring countries such as the People's Republic of China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Economic growth has gone through boom and bust cycles, and recent episodes of moderate economic expansion have had limited impact on the poor. Great inequality across income brackets, regions, and sectors, as well as unmanaged population growth, are considered some of the key factors constraining poverty reduction efforts. This publication analyzes the causes of poverty and recommends ways to accelerate poverty reduction and achieve more inclusive growth. it also provides an overview of current government responses, strategies, and achievements in the fight against poverty and identifies and prioritizes future needs and interventions. The analysis is based on current literature and the latest available data, including the 2006 Family Income and Expenditure Survey.

Book Social Impact of the Global Financial Crisis in the Philippines

Download or read book Social Impact of the Global Financial Crisis in the Philippines written by Arsenio M. Balisacan and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anecdotal evidence permeates accounts on the impact of the global economic crisis on Philippine poverty. This study systematically assesses the evidence and recent data. It adopts a somewhat eclectic approach as applying regression and decomposition techniques to trace the impact of the global economic crisis on gross domestic product and its major components, constructing panel data from nationally representative household surveys to trace the changes in household welfare during the crisis, and combining national income accounts and household survey data to simulate the differential effects of the crisis across population groups and social divides. Empirical findings suggest that although the Philippine economy did not slide to recession during the crisis, its impact on the economy and poverty across population groups was nonetheless severe---and may linger for many years to come.

Book The Determinants of Economic Growth in the Philippines

Download or read book The Determinants of Economic Growth in the Philippines written by Ms.Willa Boots J. Tolo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses a panel of 23 emerging markets for the period 1965?2008 to study the determinants of per capita GDP growth in the Philippines. The Philippines is an outlier in terms of agricultural exports, investment, research and development, population growth, and political uncertainty. Panel regressions reveal that these factors, along with the deficit, inflation, trade openness, the current account balance and the frequency of crisis episodes are siginificant determinants of growth. A growth index confirms that these determinants also capture the absolute and relative performance of each country over time and suggests that the Philippines has lacked a sustained period of relatively strong economic reforms.

Book The Philippine Economy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, a leading group of scholars pose the question, has the Philippine economy rejoined the dynamic East Asian mainstream and, if so, what set of policies and priorities are required to maintain the strong economic momentum of recent years? Successive chapters address issues related to growth and poverty, infrastructure and urbanization, education, health, the environment, energy, development finance, and governance and institutions. The book has been written with a broad audience in mind. First and foremost it is for readers in, and interested in, this fascinating and important country with a population that now exceeds a hundred million. Second, it will appeal to those in the broader development community with an interest in the analytical and policy challenges that democratic, middle-income countries face as they struggle to lift their citizens out of poverty and to achieve broad-based and environmentally sustainable growth.
