Book Economic Concentration Structure Behavior and Public Policy

Download or read book Economic Concentration Structure Behavior and Public Policy written by John Malcolm Blair and published by New York : Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. This book was released on 1972 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a veteran of both the Bureau of Economics of the Federal Trade Commission and the Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust and Monopoly during the 1960s, author Blair is an advocate. His advocacy of his position is clear, concise, and understandable: he favors strong antitrust laws and the stricter application of those laws to existing corporate structures, and this is his argument. First, it defines and discusses four types of economic concentration-market, vertical, conglomerate, and aggregate. Second, high concentration (as opposed to diffusion of control) is shown to be neither the necessary nor the "natural" state of the economy because "centrifugal" forces (eventual diseconomies of scale, growth, and technological change) constantly are chipping away at dominance and ossification. Third, it argues that the primary causes of high and rising concentration of various kinds are neither natural nor technological imperatives (economies of scale, technological change): rather, they are artificial and unnecessary "centripetal" factors, the most important being mergers, acquisitions, TV advertising, predation, and anticompetitive government policies of various kinds. The result, therefore, is a work rich in empirical information and skillful in interpreting and verifying new data and statistical approaches; moreover, it integrates a substantial quantity of data never attempted in this area in the past. In this sense it is an excellent contribution. No topic considered has been shortchanged, the treatment is competent. But the effort to cover the entire waterfront leaves several urgent questions: What can be done and where? How may we attempt new approaches to our subject? How may we first better convince the general public and Congress that, indeed, a strong antitrust policy is desirable?

Book excerpt: American markets, once a model for the world, are giving up on competition. Thomas Philippon blames the unchecked efforts of corporate lobbyists. The result is less efficient markets, leading to higher prices and lower wages.

Book excerpt: Analyzes the extent to which foreign investment in Mexico's information technology sector brought economic, social, and environmental benefits to Guadalajara. Foreign investment has been widely perceived as a panacea for developing countries—as a way to reduce poverty and kick-start sustainable modern industries. The Enclave Economy calls this prescription into question, showing that Mexico's post-NAFTA experience of foreign direct investment in its information technology sector, particularly in the Guadalajara region, did not result in the expected benefits. Charting the rise and fall of Mexico's “Silicon Valley,” the authors explore issues that resonate through much of Latin America and the developing world: the social, economic, and environmental effects of market-driven globalization. In the 1990s, Mexico was a poster child for globalization, throwing open its borders to trade and foreign investment, embracing NAFTA, and ending the government's role in strengthening domestic industry. But The Enclave Economy shows that although Mexico was initially successful in attracting multinational corporations, foreign investments waned in the absence of active government support and as China became increasingly competitive. Moreover, the authors find that foreign investment created an “enclave economy” the benefits of which were confined to an international sector not connected to the wider Mexican economy. In fact, foreign investment put many local IT firms out of business and transferred only limited amounts of environmentally sound technology. The authors suggest policies and strategies that will enable Mexico and other developing countries to foster foreign investment for sustainable development in the future.

Download or read book Economics in the Long Run written by Theodore Rosenof and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though understandably preoccupied with the immediate problems of the Great Depression, the generation of economists that came to the forefront in the 1930s also looked ahead to the long-term consequences of the crisis and proposed various solutions to prevent its recurrence. Theodore Rosenof examines the long-run theories and legacies of four of the leading members of this generation: John Maynard Keynes of Great Britain, who influenced the New Deal from afar; Alvin Hansen and Gardiner Means, who fought over the direction of New Deal policy; and Joseph Schumpeter, an opponent of the New Deal. Rosenof explores the conflicts that arose among long-run theorists, arguing that such disputes served eventually to set the stage for the emergence and domination of a short-run Keynesian approach to economic policy that collapsed under the impact of 1970s stagflation. Tracing the subsequent revival of long-run theories, Rosenof demonstrates their relevance to an understanding of the economy's problems over the past quarter-century and to the current debate over public policy.
