Book Change in Rural Appalachia

Download or read book Change in Rural Appalachia written by John D. Photiadis and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appalachia is a region in trouble. Even in the more remote coves and hollows, major social and economic changes are disturbing the traditional ways of life. The conditions which have made it a pocket of poverty cannot be easily eradicated; and the rapid changes of recent years have added further severe problems of adjustment which deeply affect the family, church life, education, the folk subculture, and, above all, the individual. Outmigration, psychological dislocation, and cultural alienation are the result. The nine contributing scholars have lived and worked in Appalachia; they know the people and their customs, their problems and their needs. They are thoroughly familiar with the programs now in operation, and are well qualified to evaluate their success or failure in terms of those needs. Furthermore, their findings can be applied to other regions and nations, wherever an isolated group has been abruptly incorporated into the mainstream of society while many of its peculiar problems remain unsolved. Rural Appalachia may in fact be considered a microcosm of the underdeveloped nations of the world; the issues raised here far transcend the importance of a regional study. The essays are grouped according to four general areas of research. The first part deals with the individual in his society; the second with six social institutions—economy, government, family, religion, education, and power structure; the third with methods and objectives of change; and the fourth with the aims of change agencies, particularly the Extension Service of the future. As the tangle of problems, strains, and tensions is explored, the focus remains steadily upon immediate and longterm effects on the individual. The book is dedicated to "the professional field workers in programs of directed change . . . struggling on the one hand with ideas, theories, and conceptual innovations, and on the other hand with the immediate realities of the local situations."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often referred to as the leader of inspiration in Appalachian studies, Helen Matthews Lewis linked scholarship with activism and encouraged deeper analysis of the region. Lewis shaped the field of Appalachian studies by emphasizing community participation and challenging traditional perceptions of the region and its people. Helen Matthews Lewis: Living Social Justice in Appalachia, a collection of Lewis's writings and memories that document her life and work, begins in 1943 with her job on the yearbook staff at Georgia State College for Women with Mary Flannery O'Connor. Editors Patricia D. Beaver and Judith Jennings highlight the achievements of Lewis's extensive career, examining her role as a teacher and activist at Clinch Valley College (now University of Virginia at Wise) and East Tennessee State University in the 1960s, as well as her work with Appalshop and the Highland Center. Helen Matthews Lewis connects Lewis's works to wider social movements by examining the history of progressive activism in Appalachia. The book provides unique insight into the development of regional studies and the life of a dynamic revolutionary, delivering a captivating and personal narrative of one woman's mission of activism and social justice.

They find few shortcomings in the existent social life. They envision the Appalachians as a necessary reservoir of population, and its society as a repository for those cultural traits essential for the preservation of the national stability. Book Living Conditions and Population Migration in Four Appalachian Counties Classic Reprint

Download or read book Living Conditions and Population Migration in Four Appalachian Counties Classic Reprint written by Linden Seymour Dodson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Conditions and Population Migration in Four Appalachian Counties No area of the Nation, unless it be the so-called Dust Bowl, has been more in the minds of those concerned with disadvantaged classes in agri culture than has the Appalachian Mountain region For the most part, this region is one with comparatively poor lands, heavy population, and high birth rates. Until recent years, and even yet at many places in the re gion, the farm population has lived in relatively great isolation. By many it is described as one of the chief agricultural problem areas of the Nation. The Appalachian Mountain region was first occupied by white settlers between 1800 and 1830. It is, therefore, an area of comparatively old settlement. In the early days, agriculture was a very different occupa tion and enterprise from what it is today. Furthermore, during the earlier history of the region supplementary sources of income and support were available from lumbering, wild life, and some mining. Many of these natural resources are now badly depleted and the major portion of the population must find economic support in agriculture.
