Download or read book Economic and Industrial Progress of the Century written by H. De Beltgens Gibbins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic and Industrial, Progress of the Century The purpose of this volume is to give to the general reader, as well as to the student, some idea of the progress and conditions of industry and commerce during the nineteenth century. The author endeavours to treat his subject in such a manner as to interest the man of business as well as the lover of history, and though, of course, a work of this kind depends upon facts and statistics for its basis, yet the reader will not be bewildered by long tables of figures, but the necessary items will all be explained in the course of the text. The volume opens with an account of the Industrial Revolution which so completely changed the course of industry and commerce at the beginning of the nineteenth century. As it began in England, that country is necessarily treated first, but throughout the work proper attention is given to the progress of the United States, Canada and the British Colonies, France, Germany, and the different states of Europe, and in fact the chief commercial nations of the world. Passing, then, from the Industrial Revolution, the state of commerce and industry in England, America, Europe, and the Colonies is discussed. Book Technology and Industrial Progress

Download or read book Technology and Industrial Progress written by G. N. Von Tunzelmann and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has dictated the rate and direction of technological change? How central has it been to industrial progress? How has it related to other determinants of economic growth and development? In Technology and Industrial Progress, Dr von Tunzelmann examines theoretical views on the nature and contribution of technology, and the empirical evidence from the major industrializing countries from the 18th century to the present day. The experiences of countries regarded in their time as the leaders of industrialization - Britain in the 18th century, the United States in the 19th century and Japan in the 20th century - are critically compared by the author. The following chapters study the transfer of each of these patterns of technology and growth to later industrializers, such as continental Europe, the Soviet Union, and today's newly industrializing countries. Adopting approaches drawn from evolutionary economics, Dr von Tunzelmann links micro-level phenomena relating to individual firms and technologies to macro-level outcomes as reflected in economic growth and development. This long-awaited book is exceptional both in the range of countries surveyed and the breadth of topics analysed, encompassing changes in production processes, products and marketing, management and finance.

Book A Short History of Economic Progress

Download or read book A Short History of Economic Progress written by Y.S. Brennor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Y. S. Brenner is an economist whose main concern is with development, and this attitude is reflected in his approach to economic history. He begins this seminal study in the era of the Reformation in Europe, and bases it on the hypothesis that once started, economic progress will spread over ever-increasing parts of the earth wherever and whenever conditions become suitable. From this point of view, he examines the nature of the impediments which prevent the more rapid and general progress of mankind towards greater material affluence, while at the same time considering the positive growth promoting factors in the various economies. Thus, he provides an analysis of economic progress in the developed countries showing which natural, social, political and cultural forces promoted such progress and which delayed or hindered it. He attempts to explain why European nations took several decades to emulate the achievements of Britain and why nations in other parts of the world, such as Japan and Russia, were unable for a considerable time to match the advances made in parts of Western Europe and the United States. Finally, he attempts to explain why the developing countries are still finding it so difficult to catch up with the economic progress of the more advanced nations.Y. S. Brenner was Head of the Department of Economics at Cape Coast University in Ghana. The book arose from a series of lectures on economic development he delivered there during the years 1966-1967. This book was first published in 1969.

Book Industrial Progress and Human Economics

Download or read book Industrial Progress and Human Economics written by James Hartness and published by . This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Industrial Progress and Human Economics" is a book authored by James Hartness, an American mechanical engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, and politician. Published in 1925, this book reflects Hartness's views on the intersection of industrial development, economic progress, and human welfare. Hartness was a prominent figure in the early 20th-century American industrial landscape, known for his innovations in machine tool technology and his role as the Governor of Vermont. In "Industrial Progress and Human Economics," he explores the relationship between industrialization and societal well-being, offering insights into how economic progress can be harnessed to improve the lives of individuals and communities. The book delves into various aspects of industrial progress, including technological innovation, productivity growth, and the organization of labor. Hartness emphasizes the importance of efficiency and innovation in driving economic growth, arguing that technological advancements are essential for improving living standards and expanding economic opportunities. At the same time, Hartness recognizes the potential social and environmental consequences of unchecked industrialization. He advocates for a balanced approach to economic development that takes into account the needs of workers, the preservation of natural resources, and the promotion of social equity. Central to Hartness's vision of "human economics" is the idea that economic progress should serve the broader interests of society, rather than merely maximizing profits for a select few. He calls for policies and practices that prioritize the well-being of workers, promote social justice, and foster a sense of community and solidarity. Throughout the book, Hartness draws on his own experiences as an engineer and businessman to illustrate his arguments, offering practical examples of how industrial progress can be aligned with human welfare. He also reflects on the role of government and public policy in shaping the trajectory of economic development, advocating for proactive measures to address social and economic challenges. Overall, "Industrial Progress and Human Economics" presents a holistic and forward-thinking perspective on the relationship between industrialization, economic growth, and human flourishing. Hartness's insights remain relevant today, offering valuable lessons for policymakers, business leaders, and scholars interested in promoting sustainable and inclusive economic development.
