Download or read book Global Imbalances written by Pietro Cova and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the role played by emerging Asia in the emergence and evolution of the global trade imbalances. Based on simulations in a general equilibrium model of the world economy, we find that a productivity slowdown in the non-tradable sector of these economies in the second half of the 1990s fits regional macroeconomic developments relatively well, but has limited spillover effect to the United States trade balance. In contrast, an increase in the desired level of emerging Asia net foreign assets starting in 2001 not only fits regional developments relatively well, but also has a significant spillover effect to the United States.

Download or read book Global Imbalances written by Nicoletta Batini and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the role played by total factor productivity (TFP) in the tradable and nontradable sectors of the United States, the euro area, and Japan in the emergence and evolution of today's global trade imbalances. Simulation results based on a dynamic general equilibrium model of the world economy, and using the EU KLEMS database, indicate that TFP developments in these economies can account for a significant fraction of the total deterioration in the U.S. trade balance since 1999, as well as account for some the surpluses in the euro area and Japan. Differences in TFP developments across sectors can also partially explain the evolution of the real effective value of the U.S. dollar during this period.

Download or read book Welfare for the Rich written by Phil Harvey and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welfare for the Rich is the first book to describe and analyze the many ways that federal and state governments provide handouts—subsidies, grants, tax credits, loan guarantees, price supports, and many other payouts—to millionaires, billionaires, and the companies they own and run. Many journalists, scholars, and activists have focused on one or more of these dysfunctional programs. A few of the most egregious examples have even become famous. But Welfare for the Rich is the first attempt to paint a comprehensive, easily accessible picture of a system largely designed by the richest Americans—through lobbyists, lawyers, political action committees, special interest groups, and other powerful influencers—with the specific goal of making sure the government keeps wealth and power flowing from the many to the few.
Download or read book Administration and coordination of genetic expression by proteins structuring the genome written by Michèle Amouyal and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These last years, a new class of proteins involved in the regulation of gene expression has been unraveled besides such classical elements as polymerases, transcription factors or enhancers, directly responsible for gene expression. This class introduces a second order level of regulation which is superimposed on that of the standard regulators and is revealed by epigenetic modifications. One end of this group is occupied by the so-called gene insulators such as CTCF that organize the action of the standard regulators and of invasive chromatin in order to limit and target their action to a specific gene or genetic entity. At the other end, one would find the proteins operating at the level of the whole genome and of cellular programming, such as SATB1. They are specific proteins nearly totally dedicated to organization and coordination of gene expression, like CTCF, or proteins also found involved in other cellular devices, like transcription factors extracted from the transcriptional machinery , such as TFIIIC, or proteins involved in sister chromatid cohesion, like cohesin. But they share in common to generally act over long distances or between chromosomes, to structure a true intra- or inter-chromosomal genomic architecture, and to mainly act at the epigenetic level. Their role in the control of gene expression is certified by the increasing number of pathologies to which their dysfunction contributes.
Download or read book Selected Topics in Structronics and Mechatronic Systems written by Alexander Belyaev and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past twenty years, the scientific community has witnessed a technological revolution in products and processes, from consumer goods to factory automation systems. This revolution is based on the integration, right from the design phase, of the best that current technology can offer in electronics, control systems, computers, structures and mechanics. The terms that have emerged, for the synergetic approach to design, and integration of sensors, actuators, computers, structures and mechanics, are ?structronics? and ?mechatronics?. Structronics can be viewed as an integration of mechatronic systems into structures, which emphasizes a synergistic integration beginning at fertilization. Similar to mechatronics (established in the 1980s), structronics is recognized as one of the essential technologies in the 21st century. This comprehensive reference book gives an overview of the current state of structronics and mechatronics in both structural/mechanical and material systems. Consisting of nine self-contained chapters, it presents recent developments and covers emerging topics in the field. The key features include: ? treatment of the nonholonomic variables in robotics? attenuation of fluid flow pulsation in hydraulic systems? presentation of mathematical modeling and experiments on complex nonlinear dynamics of washing machines? a survey of research findings in hydraulic gap control of rolling mills? detailed description of mathematical modeling and nonlinear control of a temper controlling mill? applications of high frequency dynamics in engineering structures? development of novel computational methods to include plasticity and damage in flexible multibody systems? new trends in optimal design of engineering structures? a review of ionic polymer metal composites (IPMCs) as sensors, actuators and artificial musclesSelected Topics in Structronics and Mechatronic Systems will be of interest to engineers, materials scientists, physicists and applied mathematicians

Download or read book The Lifestyle Puzzle written by Henrick Vejlgaard and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author describes the emergence of a radically new type of tribalism, one based not on the fixity of age-old ethnic tradition but on the fluidity of diverse lifestyle choices being made by contemporary individuals. --Stephen Bertman, PhD, author of Hyperculture and Cultural AmnesiaAmerican society is more diverse than ever. A country that used to think of itself as the great melting pot may soon be calling itself the great lifestyle buffet. With increasing affluence, more and more Americans are in a position to choose whatever lifestyle most appeals to them. The result is that the national landscape has become an intricate mosaic of varying styles, self-expressions, and ways of life. Even the distinction between majority and minority is starting to blur.Is there any pattern to this ever-shifting kaleidoscope of identities? Social scientist and communications specialist Henrik Vejlgaard puts the pieces together into a coherent picture in this fascinating study of American diversity. Applying the astute pattern-recognition skills that he demonstrated in his previous book, the critically acclaimed Anatomy of a Trend, Vejlgaard examines how we transform our identities into practical everyday living-into our lifestyle.Going beyond the usual markers of identity-race, ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, income level, etc-he focuses on modes of communicating group identity nonverbally through consumer choices, clothing fashions, personal color choices, adornments, accessories, logos, signs, and symbols. Curiously, what emerges from his analysis is a pattern as ancient as human culture itself-a new form of tribalism. He foresees this trend continuing so that by the end of the twenty-first century there will be less identification with nation-states and ethnic groups and more small-group identification. As globalization and mass communication continue to link us together, we may all become so used to diversity that the idea of conflict based on national identity distinctions may seem antiquated.A book of remarkable insights, The Lifestyle Puzzle will have great appeal to readers interested in popular culture, social change, and consumer tastes.Henrik Vejlgaard, M.A., M.Sc. (Copenhagen, Denmark), is the author of Anatomy of a Trend, the groundbreaking book about how changes in style and taste take place. Combining a background of social science and communication, he is a master of recognizing patterns where others see only chaos. He has lectured on lifestyle and trend sociology at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Arhus, both in Denmark. Anatomy of a Trend has been published in more than thirty countries and translated into, among other languages, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Italian. Previously he has written three books in Danish on lifestyle and trend sociology. Visit Henrik Vejlgaard online at www.henrikvejlgaard.com.
