Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this scorching, mournful, often explicit, and never less than moving literary novel by the famed creator of the Easy Rawlins series, Debbie Dare, a black porn queen, has to come to terms with her sordid life in the adult entertainment industry after her tomcatting husband dies in a hot tub. Electrocuted. With another woman in there with him. Debbie decides she just isn't going to "do it anymore." But executing her exit strategy from the porn world is a wrenching and far from simple process. Millions of men (and no doubt many women) have watched famed black porn queen Debbie Dare—she of the blond wig and blue contacts-"do it" on television and computer screens every which way with every combination of partners the mind of man can imagine. But one day an unexpected and thunderous on-set orgasm catches Debbie unawares, and when she returns to the mansion she shares with her husband, insatiable former porn star and "film producer" Theon Pinkney, she discovers that he's died in a case of hot tub electrocution, "auditioning" an aspiring "starlet." Burdened with massive debts that her husband incurred, and which various L.A. heavies want to collect on, Debbie must reckon with a life spent in the peculiar subculture of the pornography industry and her estrangement from her family and the child she had to give up. She's done with porn, but her options for what might come next include the possibility of suicide. Debbie . . . is a portrait of a ransacked but resilient soul in search of salvation and a cure for grief.

Download or read book Heart of the Hummingbird written by Mary L. Montalvo and published by Lulu. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary L. Montalvo's Heart of the Hummingbird opens a soul that endured the depths of depression and conquered adversities when all rays of hope faded into dark shadows. The poems in this collection reflect the cruel and inhumane treatment that Montalvo suffered in several mental institutions. Her professional and personal lives were abruptly turned upside down when mental illness struck. But by the grace of God, she returned to her faith, family, and friends and was brought back to a new life. Moving through this stirring work, readers will soar through the heights and explore emotions of the abyss. Each of us lives the life that is our own whether we like it or not, whether we crave it or curse it, and Montalvo recounts the most painful parts of the journey by using poetry as a necessary shelter. Heart of the Hummingbird evokes strife, tribulation, happiness, and sadness; Montalvo's soul flutters as it is imbued in each of these poems, like the heart of the hummingbird.

Download or read book Conversations with Jim Harrison Revised and Updated written by Robert DeMott and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversations with Jim Harrison, Revised and Updated offers a judicious selection of interviews spanning the writing career of Jim Harrison (1937–2016) from its beginnings in the 1960s to the last interview he gave weeks before his death in March 2016. Harrison labeled himself and lived as a “quadra-schizoid” writer. He worked in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and screenwriting, and he published more than forty books that attracted an international following. These interviews supply a lively narrative of his progress as a major contemporary American author. This collection showcases Harrison's pet peeves, his candor and humility, his sense of humor, and his patience. He does not shy from his authorial obsessions, especially his efforts to hone the novella, for which he is considered a contemporary master, or the frequency with which he defied polite narrative conventions and created memorable, resolute female characters. Each conversation attests to the depth and range of Harrison’s considerable intellectual and political preoccupations, his fierce social and ecological conscience, his aesthetic beliefs, and his stylistic orientations in poetry and prose.

There are desert paths to be sure where a snake slithers past the moon, leaving them both to crawl home to caves and holes. But there are also Happy Hour epiphanies where a margarita dancer shares with him a glimpse of her beauty and moments of sarcastic bliss among friends over a good-beer. There are times the quester needs to be in solitude: And if you want to talk to me Find me In person Maybe Australia There are times he seeks solidarity with a significant other: ohhhhhhhh Lord your girllllllllllllllllllllll for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee When shes found and Reeling and rocking as our flame grows higher than others he leads Make our flame last. I couldnt agree more.
Download or read book The Island at the Center of the World written by Russell Shorto and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2005-04-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a riveting, groundbreaking narrative, Russell Shorto tells the story of New Netherland, the Dutch colony which pre-dated the Pilgrims and established ideals of tolerance and individual rights that shaped American history. "Astonishing . . . A book that will permanently alter the way we regard our collective past." --The New York Times When the British wrested New Amsterdam from the Dutch in 1664, the truth about its thriving, polyglot society began to disappear into myths about an island purchased for 24 dollars and a cartoonish peg-legged governor. But the story of the Dutch colony of New Netherland was merely lost, not destroyed: 12,000 pages of its records–recently declared a national treasure–are now being translated. Russell Shorto draws on this remarkable archive in The Island at the Center of the World, which has been hailed by The New York Times as “a book that will permanently alter the way we regard our collective past.” The Dutch colony pre-dated the “original” thirteen colonies, yet it seems strikingly familiar. Its capital was cosmopolitan and multi-ethnic, and its citizens valued free trade, individual rights, and religious freedom. Their champion was a progressive, young lawyer named Adriaen van der Donck, who emerges in these pages as a forgotten American patriot and whose political vision brought him into conflict with Peter Stuyvesant, the autocratic director of the Dutch colony. The struggle between these two strong-willed men laid the foundation for New York City and helped shape American culture. The Island at the Center of the World uncovers a lost world and offers a surprising new perspective on our own.
