Book Eckley Miners Village

Download or read book Eckley Miners Village written by Perry K. Blatz and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eckley, near Hazleton, Pennsylvania, was a typical company-mining town, or 'patch', which was in existence from 1854 to 1969. Coal companies constructed and operated villages, such as Eckley, for their workers, providing housing, stores, churches, and schools -- and by extension making the workers wholly dependent on the company. The workers were originally English, Welsh, and German, and later in the century they were joined by immigrants from Ireland and southern and eastern Europe, forming an ethnically diverse community. The site interprets the day-to-day life of the workers and their families.

Book excerpt: Patchtown is a collection of historical fiction vignettes, based on real people who lived and worked in the anthracite coal company-owned town of Eckley, Pennsylvania. With the use of the United States census records from 1860-1920, each decade from the Eckley census records will come to life through the narratives of the men, women, and children who lived and worked at the Council Ridge Colliery in Eckley, Pennsylvania. Through combining historical research and artistic license, Patchtown's personas involve themselves in the living and working conditions, and social events that defined the anthracite coal fields of Northeastern Pennsylvania. In each decade's chapter, Patchtown's personas will be directly or indirectly affected by local and national events such as the 1877 Molly Maguire trials, the Lattimer Massacre, the Strike of 1902, and the other industrial and social events specific to Northeastern Pennsylvania and anthracite patchtowns.

Book Lost Coal Country of Northeastern Pennsylvania

Download or read book Lost Coal Country of Northeastern Pennsylvania written by Lorena Beniquez and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost Coal Country of Northeastern Pennsylvania documents the region's disappearing anthracite history, which shaped the legacy of the United States of America and the industrial revolution. The coal mines, breakers, coal miners' homes, and railroads have all steadily disappeared. With only one coal breaker left in the entire state, it was time to record what would soon be lost. Unfortunately, one piece of history that persists is underground fires that ravage communities like Centralia. Blazing for over 50 years, the flames of Centralia will not be doused anytime soon. Images featured in the book include the St. Nicholas coal breaker, Huber coal breaker, Steamtown National Historic Site, Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, Eckley Miners' Village, Centralia, and the Knox Mine disaster. A hybrid history book and travel guide, Lost Coal Country of Northeastern Pennsylvania is one final recounting of what is gone and what still remains.

Book excerpt: While concerns about climate change have focused negative attention on the coal industry in recent years, as descendants of the industrial revolution we have all benefitted from the mining of the black seam. Coal has significantly influenced the course of human history and our social and natural environments. This book takes readers on a journey through the extraordinary artistic responses to coal, from its role in the works of writers such as Émile Zola, D. H. Lawrence, and George Orwell; to the way it inspired the work of painters, including J. M. W. Turner, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh; to the place of coal in film, song, and folklore; as well as the surprising allure of coal tourism. Strikingly illustrated, Coal provides engaging and informative insight into the myriad ways coal has affected our lives.
