Book excerpt: Decades of war started by a genocidal faction of aliens threatens the existence of any human or alien resisting their rule on Earth. Dani survives by scavenging enough supplies to live another day while avoiding the local military and human-hunting Wardens. But then she learns that she is part of the nearly immortal alien race of Echoes—not the human she’s always thought herself to be—and suddenly nothing in her life seems certain. Following her discovery of her alien roots, Dani risks her well-being to save a boy from becoming a slave—a move that only serves to make her already-tenuous existence on the fringes of society in Maine even more unstable, and which forces her to revisit events and people from past lives she can’t remember. Dani believes the only way to defeat the Wardens and end their dominance is to unite the Commonwealth’s military and civilians, and she becomes resolved to play her part in this battle. Her attempts to change the bleak future facing the humans and Echoes living on Earth suffering under the Wardens will lead her to clash with a tyrant determined to kill her and all humankind—a confrontation that even her near-immortal heritage may not be able to help her survive.

Book Echoes in Now Time

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the reader, this book could be a journey into the author's mind, his heart and sometimes even his soul--full of defining moments--a peek into the man he's becoming. And for him, this is a journey that began and remained in a dream for nearly 40 years. Not quite awake, not quite asleep, but definitely and always--present. The journals that were the landscapes he painted with words of passion, of love or fury, but never indifference--were also the buffers that allowed an intensely private young man full and safe expression. A few of the poems he shares are simply whimsical. Their substance may be felt like the fluffy feathers of a down pillow. Something soft and cool to lay your head on and feel pleasantly OK. For him though, most of his poetry feels and looks like the rings of a once handsome, but rugged tree. Not cut down, but only momentarily exposed so as to share--not its own, but nature's history and gifts of beauty. The author begs the reader's indulgence in allowing him the outpouring of his bilingual spirit on some of these pages. The inspiration that flows may look like a florescent yellow cactus flower in a sea of white Spring lilies, but where the heart goes, the pen just follows. Like this book, he has opened himself up and invites any who will dare to meander through his sometimes quirky imagination. Now, no more the guarded, reserved dreamer, but a wiser optimist and a realist--at least every other Tuesday. No teacher is he, as the majestic brother Wolf, but the mythical Coyote prankster whose many plans and schemes often cause him to flail and fall only to get back up and try again to sometimes succeed in the light of his efforts. Dear reader, this book is his way of giving thanks and giving back by sharing with complete abandon, for all the pleasures and sorrows, and even each breath we take for granted.

Book Echoes in the Darkness

Download or read book Echoes in the Darkness written by Joseph Wambaugh and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 25, 1989, the naked corpse of schoolteacher Susan Reinert was found wedged into her hatchback car in a hotel parking lot near Philadelphia's "Main Line." Her two children had vanished. The Main Line Murder Case burst upon the headlines--and wasn't resolved for seven years. Now, master crime writer Joseph Wambaugh reconstructs the case from its roots, recounting the details, drama, players and pawns in this bizarre crime that shocked the nation and tore apart a respectable suburban town. The massive FBI and state police investigation ultimately centered on two men. Dr. Jay C. Smith--By day he was principal of Upper Merion High School where Susan Reinert taught. At night he was a sadist who indulged in porno, drugs, and weapons. William Bradfield--He was a bearded and charismatic English teacher and classics scholar, but his real genius was for juggling women--three at a time. One of those women was Susan Reinert. How these two men are connected, how the brilliant murder was carried off, and how the investigators closed this astounding case makes for Wambaugh's most compelling book yet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cheyenne's body suddenly without warning began turning against her with fierce and haunting attacks of ravaging pain and fear ripping through her with such vengence that with each onslaught she thought that she was surely losing her mind. It wasn't her mind that she was losing though, it was her mind and memory that she was gaining as her subconscious was battling to give her consciousness the details of a past so traumatic that her conscious couldn't deal with the reality, and stored all of the horror into the subconscious memory bank away from the devastation that the knowlege would have caused her. She had been safe for many years until recently, when out of nowhere a juggernaut jolted her subconscious and cracked open the contents as it struggled to come out of hiding to reek havoc once more on the mind and soul of the quiet, sullen and withdrawn cheyenne. With the emotional storm at hand, trying to crest, Cheyenne began investigating her own hauntings, only to find out the truth about herself, and what her deceiving parents had tried to keep buried for so long. With each clue and truth, others did whatever they could do to stop her from discovering her past, and finding out who was responsible. Her rewards at the end of this trecherous journey was a great love, the conviction of those who tried to destroy her, and a very special person enters her life. A very poignant story.

Book Conservative Echoes in Fin de Si cle Parisian Art Criticism

Download or read book Conservative Echoes in Fin de Si cle Parisian Art Criticism written by Michael Marlais and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the painting of the 1880s and 1890s in Paris has been studied in great depth, the concurrent art criticism has not been given the attention it deserves. Conservative Echoes examines previously unexplored aspects of the symbolist criticism of art, revealing its conservative nature, and thus providing a new view of the art criticism of one of the most significant periods in the development of modern art. Art historians tend to focus on a small body of criticism written by authors who championed one or more of the artists recognized today as leaders of the avant-garde. In essence, it is the art that directs most studies of criticism rather than the criticism itself. Michael Marlais has studied late nineteenth-century criticism on all levels, from popular press to esoteric review, in order to understand the context in which avant-garde art criticism appeared. He focuses on the critics Félix Fénéon, Albert Aurier, Alphonse Germain, Camille Mauclair, and Maurice Denis, noting both conservative and modernist features of their writing, while attempting to situate them within the antinaturalist intellectual trends of the period. Marlais emphasizes the relationship of avant-garde critics to the broader cultural milieu, thus providing both a valuable corrective in the study of fin-de-siècle art history and another way of understanding the cultural climate in Paris during that time.
