Book Scribes as Sages and Prophets

Download or read book Scribes as Sages and Prophets written by Jutta Krispenz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of the Hebrew Bible used to look at „Prophecy" and „Wisdom" as clearly distinct realms represented by antagonistic and mutually exclusive roles of their central characters: the loyal sage, the pillar of administration, on the one side and the rebellious prophet, criticizing the establishment, on the other. While the influence of wisdom thought on prophetic texts has been a topic in the scholarly debate, the complementary question of the influence of prophetic thought on wisdom texts has rarely been asked. The contributions in this volume look at both questions: They start from the assumption that texts from the Hebrew Bible and the cultures surrounding Ancient Israel all originated from a social stratum of educated scribes, who authored and transmitted these texts. It then seems plausible that wisdom texts might show similar traces of prophetic influence to those of wisdom thoughts found in prophetic texts. The essays give a multifaceted picture concerning the mutual perception of prophets and sages and thus provide a deeper understanding of both wisdom literature and prophecy.

Book The Drama of Doctrine

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin J. Vanhoozer
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2005-08-02
  • ISBN : 1611642124
  • Pages : 508 pages

Download or read book The Drama of Doctrine written by Kevin J. Vanhoozer and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2005-08-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observing a strange disappearance of doctrine within the church, Kevin Vanhoozer argues that there is no more urgent task for Christians today than to engage in living truthfully with others before God. He details how doctrine serves the church--the theater of the gospel--by directing individuals and congregations to participate in the drama of what God is doing to renew all things in Jesus Christ. Taking his cue from George Lindbeck and others who locate the criteria of Christian identity in Spirit-led church practices, Vanhoozer relocates the norm for Christian doctrine in the canonical practices, which, he argues, both provoke and preserve the integrity of the church's witness as prophetic and apostolic.

Book Prophetic Witness and the Reimagining of the World

Download or read book Prophetic Witness and the Reimagining of the World written by Mark S. Burrows and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the prophetic characteristics of literature, particularly poetry, that seek to reimagine the world in which it is written. Using theological and philosophical insights it charts the relentless impulse of literature to propose alternative visions, practicable or utopian, and point toward possibilities of renewal and change. Drawing from each of the three main Abrahamic religions, as well as Greek and Latin classics, an international group of scholars utilise a diverse range of analytical and interpretive methods to draw out the prophetic voice in poetry. Looking at the writings of figures like T. S. Elliot, Blake, Wittgenstein and Isaiah, the theme of the prophetic is shown to be of timely importance given the current state of geo-political challenges and uncertainties and offers a much-needed critical discussion of these broad cultural questions. This collection of essays offers readers an insight into the constructive power of literature. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars working in Religion and the Arts, Religious Studies, Theology and Aesthetics.
