Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tolkien’s wizard Gandalf, Wagner’s Valkyrie Brünnhilde, Marvel’s superhero the Mighty Thor, the warrior heading for Valhalla in Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” and Donald Crisp’s portrayal of Leif Eriksson in the classic film The Viking—these are just a few examples of how Icelandic medieval literature has shaped human imagination during the past 150 years. Echoes of Valhalla is a unique look at modern adaptations of the Icelandic eddas (poems of Norse mythology) and sagas (ancient prose accounts of Viking history, voyages, and battles) across an astonishing breadth of art forms. Jón Karl Helgason looks at comic books, plays, travel books, music, and films in order to explore the reincarnations of a range of legendary characters, from the Nordic gods Thor and Odin to the saga characters Hallgerd Long-legs, Gunnar of Hlidarendi, and Leif the Lucky. Roaming the globe, Helgason unearths echoes of Nordic lore in Scandinavia, Britain, America, Germany, Italy, and Japan. He examines the comic work of Jack Kirby and cartoon work of Peter Madsen; reads the plays of Henrik Ibsen and Gordon Bottomley; engages thought travelogues by Frederick Metcalfe and Poul Vad; listens to the music of Richard Wagner, Edward Elgar, and the metal band Manowar; and watches films by directors such as Roy William Neill and Richard Fleischer, outlining the presence of the eddas and sagas in these nineteenth- and twentieth-century works. Altogether, Echoes of Valhalla tells the remarkable story of how disparate, age-old poetry and prose originally recorded in remote areas of medieval Iceland have come to be a part of our shared cultural experience today—how Nordic gods and saga heroes have survived and how their colorful cast of characters and adventures they went on are as vibrant as ever.

Book Tales of Valhalla Norse Myths and Legends

Download or read book Tales of Valhalla Norse Myths and Legends written by Martyn Whittock and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid retelling of Norse mythology that explores these legendary stories and their significance and influence on the Viking world. Valhalla and its pantheon of gods and heroes have always fascinated readers, whether it is how these tales illuminate the Viking world or influence cultural touchstones like J. R. R. Tolkien, whose Middle Earth is heavily indebted to Germanic and Norse mythology, as well as Hollywood and comic-culture. In Tales of Valhalla, the Whittocks have dramatically retold these rich stories and sets them in context within the wider Viking world. Including both myths—stories, usually religious, which explain origins, why things are as they are, the nature of the spiritual—and legends—stories which attempt to explain historical events and which may involve historical characters but which are told in a non-historical way and which often include supernatural events—Tales from Valhalla is an accessible and lively volume that brings these hallmarks of world literature to a new generation.

Book excerpt: Chapter 1: Between Two Worlds The air smelled like damp earth and pine as I trudged down the familiar streets of Willow Creek, my hometown, where the mundane and the magical had somehow become tangled in the knots of my double life. The evening sun cast long shadows across the cracked pavement, and I could hear the distant hum of cicadas, a sound that once brought comfort but now only served to remind me of how out of place I felt. A part of me longed for the simplicity of before, when school was just school, and my biggest concern was acing a chemistry test or figuring out what to say to Megan during lunch. Now, my life was a labyrinth of secrets, each twist and turn revealing another layer of the world I had been thrust into-one where ancient Valkyries walked among us, where portals to other realms were as real as the ground beneath my feet. My phone buzzed in my pocket, a reminder that I was late-again. Thorn would be waiting at the base, probably tapping his foot impatiently, his stern face a mask of disapproval. The guy was practically allergic to tardiness. I picked up the pace, though part of me wanted to drag my feet, to delay the inevitable return to a world where every step I took could have life-and-death consequences. "Mara, where've you been?" The voice came from behind me, and I turned to see Megan jogging to catch up. Her backpack jostled against her back, and a grin spread across her face as she reached my side. "Hey," I said, forcing a smile. "Just... stuff, you know?" She raised an eyebrow, but didn't press. "You've been spacing out a lot lately. Everything okay?" I wanted to tell her. I wanted to spill everything-the late-night training sessions, the missions that took me to the edge of what I thought was possible, the fact that I could sense things, feel the ebb and flow of magic as if it were a heartbeat. But how do you tell your best friend that you're part of an ancient order tasked with keeping the balance between worlds? That your life was no longer your own? "Yeah," I lied, pushing down the guilt. "Just school stuff." We walked in silence for a moment, the weight of my unspoken words pressing down on my shoulders like a physical burden. Megan started talking about some drama with the school dance committee, and I nodded along, letting her words wash over me without really hearing them. But even as I tried to focus on the normalcy of high school life, the other part of me-the Valkyrie part-sensed something amiss. It was subtle, just a slight tremor in the air, like the faintest ripple on a calm lake. My instincts, honed through months of training, told me to pay attention, but I didn't want to believe it. Not here, not now. As we reached the school gates, I felt it again-stronger this time, a pulse of energy that sent a shiver down my spine. I stopped in my tracks, my eyes narrowing...

Download or read book Valhalla the Myths of Norseland a Saga in Twelve Parts written by Julia Clinton Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valhalla the Myths of Norseland, a Saga, in Twelve Parts What a curious fact it is, that among us, English-speaking people, scholarly investigation has clung rather to the classic lore and mythology of Greece and Rome, than to the less classic, but far purer and truer religion of the North. It is much to be deplored that so slight a knowledge of Scandinavian Mythology prevails, popularly, with those who boast descent from Hengist and Horsa, and whose pride it is that in their veins flows the blood that long ago thrilled through the bold hearts of the Vikings, descendants of the old Norse-Gods.
