Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want a play-by-play account of important operations and key people during the Irish Civil War... this is your book!Kathleen Hegarty Thorne's love of Ireland and its fighting men and women ignited in 1992 during a visit to the Hegarty cottage in Ballinaheglish, County Roscommon, where the echoes of the footsteps of her deceased great-uncle and his comrades had fallen silent o'er the fields. In 2005 she introduced her first Irish tome, They Put the Flag a-Flyin', The Roscommon Volunteers 1913 to 1923, now in its third edition. Her next book, Echoes of Their Footsteps, Volume I, is a history of Ireland's War of Independence countrywide, including the months between the Truce and the beginning of the Irish Civil War. This edition, Echoes of Their Foot¬steps, Volume II, documents the actions of men and women dedicated to Ireland's freedom, the well-planned but sometimes desperate attacks and ambushes, the political pronouncements of figureheads, and the sorrowful events that engulfed the soul of the people of Ireland during the years 1922 through 1924.

Book In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse

Download or read book In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse written by Joseph Marshall and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jimmy McClean is a Lakota boy—though you wouldn’t guess it by his name: his father is part white and part Lakota, and his mother is Lakota. When he embarks on a journey with his grandfather, Nyles High Eagle, he learns more and more about his Lakota heritage—in particular, the story of Crazy Horse, one of the most important figures in Lakota and American history. Drawing references and inspiration from the oral stories of the Lakota tradition, celebrated author Joseph Marshall III juxtaposes the contemporary story of Jimmy with an insider’s perspective on the life of Tasunke Witko, better known as Crazy Horse (c. 1840–1877). The book follows the heroic deeds of the Lakota leader who took up arms against the US federal government to fight against encroachments on the territories and way of life of the Lakota people, including leading a war party to victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Along with Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse was the last of the Lakota to surrender his people to the US army. Through his grandfather’s tales about the famous warrior, Jimmy learns more about his Lakota heritage and, ultimately, himself. American Indian Youth Literature Award

Book Choice in Charles Dickens s Later Novels

Download or read book Choice in Charles Dickens s Later Novels written by Keith Easley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We read the book, and the book is reading us. In his later novels, Charles Dickens uses the interaction between characters and their audiences within the fiction to dramatise his growing understanding of the pivotal role of spectatorship and choice in a more democratic society. Egotists of all stripes, intent on bending the world to their singular will, would appropriate the power of spectatorship by taking command of the detachment necessary for choice. Dickens’s pluralistic art of sameness and difference redefines that detachment, and liberates choice both inside and outside the novels, for the relationship between characters and their audiences within the narratives actually inscribes our own relationship with them in the performance of reading, a reflective doubling of the fiction upon the reader across time with moral consequences for our spectatorship of our own lives.

Book Dickens and Benjamin

Download or read book Dickens and Benjamin written by Dr Gillian Piggott and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placing the works of Charles Dickens and Walter Benjamin in conversation with one another, Gillian Piggott argues that the two writers display a shared vision of modernity. Her analysis of their works shows that both writers demonstrate a decreased confidence in the capacity to experience truth or religious meaning in an increasingly materialist world and that both occupy similar positions towards urban modernity and its effect upon experience. Piggott juxtaposes her exploration of Benjamin's ideas on allegory and messianism with an examination of Dickens's The Old Curiosity Shop, arguing that both writers proffer a melancholy vision of a world devoid of space and time for religious experience, a state of affairs they associate with the onset of industrial capitalism. In Benjamin's The Arcades Project and Dickens's Sketches by Boz and Tale of Two Cities, among other works, the authors converge in their hugely influential treatments of the city as a site of perambulation, creativity, memory, and autobiography. At the same time, both authors relate to the vertiginous, mutable, fast-paced nature of city life as involving a concomitant change in the structure of experience, an alteration that can be understood as a reduction in the capacity to experience fully. Piggott's persuasive analyses enable a reading of Dickens as part of a European, particularly a German, tradition of thinkers and writers of industrialization and modernity. For both Dickens and Benjamin, truth appears only in moments of revelation, in fragments of modernity.
