Book Echoes From the Distant Battlefield Classic Reprint

Download or read book Echoes From the Distant Battlefield Classic Reprint written by L. M. Zimmerman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes From the Distant Battlefield In presenting this little volume to the public I am prompted by a single purpose. That purpose is to pay tribute to the Honor Roll boys from the church of which I have the proud distinction to be pastor. This Honor Roll bespeaks more eloquently than could words a story of red-blooded young manhood that went forth in defense of human rights - went forth gladly to pay the supreme sacrifice if needs be. Many of these boys were in military service near home, others in the various camps, others intrenched overseas, and still others went "over the top" never to return in the ghastly European carnage that ended on November 11, 1918. With the hope that they may also prove in some degree both interesting and helpful to others, I am herewith publishing excerpts from letters that I received from the boys, together with the letters that I sent to them. He was startled. So, he spontaneously yelled a seemingly tough question at me: What happened to the hairs on your head? Spontaneously too, I yelled an answer back at him: Nature took them in place of the wisdom that I couldnt pay for! And we teased and laughed. My friend thought I had joked, but I knew I hadnt. However, Ill leave the judgment to you. By the time youre done digesting the substance of this more than compelling masterpiece, Id like to know your stand. Had I joked or had I not?

Book excerpt: The magnificent new novel from the million-selling Booker Prize-winning author of The White Tiger: one of the most eagerly anticipated literary novels of 2011--"a kaleidoscopic portrait of a changing Mumbai." — Guardian (Best Books of 2011) Ask any Bombaywallah about Vishram Society--Tower A of the Vishram Co-operative Housing Society--and you will be told that it is unimpeachably pucca. Despite its location close to the airport, under the flight path of 747s and bordered by slums, it has been pucca for some fifty years. But Bombay has changed in half a century--not least its name--and the world in which Tower A was first built is giving way to a new city; a Mumbai of development and new money; of wealthy Indians returning with fortunes made abroad. When real estate developer Dharmen Shah offers to buy out the residents of Vishram Society, planning to use the site to build a luxury apartment complex, his offer is more than generous. Initially, though, not everyone wants to leave; many of the residents have lived in Vishram for years, and many of them are no longer young. But none can benefit from the offer unless all agree to sell. As tensions rise among the once civil neighbours, one by one those who oppose the offer give way to the majority, until only one man stands in Shah's way: Masterji, a retired schoolteacher, once the most respected man in the building. Shah is a dangerous man to refuse, but as the demolition deadline looms, Masterji's neighbours--friends who have become enemies, acquaintances turned co-conspirators--may stop at nothing to score their payday. A suspense-filled story of money and power, luxury and deprivation, and a rich tapestry peopled by unforgettable characters, not least of which is Bombay itself, Last Man in Tower opens up the hearts and minds of the inhabitants of a great city--ordinary people pushed to their limits in a place that knows none. This eBook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

Book The Three Battles of Wanat

Download or read book The Three Battles of Wanat written by Mark Bowden and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Black Hawk Down: “a first-rate collection” of long-form journalism on war, sports, politics, and more (Booklist). Mark Bowden has established himself as one of America’s leading journalists and nonfiction writers. The Three Battles of Wanat collects the best of his long-form articles, including pieces from the Atlantic, Vanity Fair, the New Yorker, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. The titular article delves into one of the bloodiest days of the War in Afghanistan and the years-long fallout it generated within the United States military. In “The Killing Machines,” Bowden examines the strategic, legal, and moral issues surrounding armed drones. And in a brilliant piece on Kim Jong-un called “The Bright Sun of Juche,” he recalibrates our understanding of the world’s youngest and most baffling dictator. Also included are profiles of newspaper scion Arthur Sulzberger; renowned defense attorney and anti-death-penalty activist Judy Clarke; professional gambler Don Johnson, who won six million dollars in a single night playing blackjack; and David Simon, the creator of the legendary HBO series The Wire. “Mark Bowden marshals his finest for The Three Battles of Wanat.” —Vanity Fair
