Dani survives by scavenging enough supplies to live another day while avoiding the local military and human-hunting Wardens. But then she learns that she is part of the nearly immortal alien race of Echoes—not the human she’s always thought herself to be—and suddenly nothing in her life seems certain. Following her discovery of her alien roots, Dani risks her well-being to save a boy from becoming a slave—a move that only serves to make her already-tenuous existence on the fringes of society in Maine even more unstable, and which forces her to revisit events and people from past lives she can’t remember. Dani believes the only way to defeat the Wardens and end their dominance is to unite the Commonwealth’s military and civilians, and she becomes resolved to play her part in this battle. Her attempts to change the bleak future facing the humans and Echoes living on Earth suffering under the Wardens will lead her to clash with a tyrant determined to kill her and all humankind—a confrontation that even her near-immortal heritage may not be able to help her survive.

Book Echoes of Mutiny

Download or read book Echoes of Mutiny written by Seema Sohi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did thousands of Indians who migrated to the Pacific Coast of North America during the early twentieth century come to forge an anticolonial movement that British authorities claimed nearly toppled their rule in India during the First World War? Seema Sohi traces how Indian labor migrants, students, and intellectual activists who journeyed across the globe seeking to escape the exploitative and politically repressive policies of the British Raj, linked restrictive immigration policies and political repression in North America to colonial subjugation at home. In the process, they developed an international anticolonial consciousness that boldly confronted the British and American empires. Hoping to become an important symbol for those battling against racial oppression and colonial subjugation across the world, Indian anticolonialists also provoked a global inter-imperial collaboration between U.S. and British officials to repress anticolonial revolt. They symbolized the hope of the world's racialized subjects and the fears of those who worried about the global disorder they could portend. Echoes of Mutiny provides an in-depth and transnational look at the deeply intertwined relationship between anti-Asian racism, Indian anticolonialism, and state antiradicalism in early twentieth century U.S. and global history. Through extensive archival research, Sohi uncovers the dialectical relationship between the rise of Indian anticolonialism and state repression in North America and demonstrates how Indian anticolonialists served as catalysts for the implementation of restrictive U.S. immigration and antiradical laws as well as the expansion of state power in early twentieth century India and America. Indian migrants came to understand their struggles against racial exclusion and political repression in North America as part of a broader movement against white supremacy and colonialism and articulated radical visions of anticolonialism that called not only for the end of British rule in India but the forging of democracies across the world.

Download or read book Echoes of Empire written by Kalypso Nicolaïdis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does our colonial past echo through today's global politics? How have former empire-builders sought vindication or atonement, and formerly colonized states reversal or retribution? This groundbreaking book presents a panoramic view of attitudes to empires past and present, seen not only through the hard politics of international power structures but also through the nuances of memory, historiography and national and minority cultural identities. Bringing together leading historians, poitical scientists and international relations scholars from across the globe, Echoes of Empire emphasizes Europe's colonial legacy whilst also highlighting the importance of non-European power centres- Ottoman, Russian, Chinese, Japanese- in shaping world politics, then and now. Echoes of Empire bridges the divide between disciplines to trace the global routes travelled by objects, ideas and people and forms a radically different notion of the term 'empire' itself. This will be an essential companion to courses on international relations and imperial history as well as a fascinating read for anyone interested in Wesern hegemony, North-South relations, global power shifts and the longue duree.

Book Echoes of Robert E Lee High School

Download or read book Echoes of Robert E Lee High School written by Clinton Carter and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology about the first decade of Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama, written and compiled by persons who supplemented their unique personal experiences at the school with research on the same. The "echoes" of the title refers to how life experiences reverberate back to us. Thus, from the beginning, its editors and writers thought of this little book of big memories and lessons of life as a compendium of the strong, positive echoes they recall from Lee and the few negative ones they cannot forget, which seem still to be informing and inspiring the lives of the school's graduates. The audience for Echoes is, of course, all past Lee High alumni, faculty, and staff and all present and prospective Lee students, faculty, and staff, along with any who support or have supported them and/or the school, and any others with sufficient connections to Lee or Lee people to enjoy reading others' recollections of their time there. The book might also be useful to anyone with a general interest in public secondary education in Montgomery County.
