Book Under the Shadow of Nationalism

Download or read book Under the Shadow of Nationalism written by Mariko Asano Tamanoi and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution of rural women to the creation and expansion of the Japanese nation-state is undeniable. As early as the nineteenth century, the women of central Japan's Nagano prefecture in particular provided abundant and cheap labor for a number of industries, most notably the silk spinning industry. Rural women from Nagano could also be found working, from a very young age, as nursemaids, domestic servants, and farm laborers. In whatever capacity they worked, these women became the objects of scrutiny and reform in a variety of nationalist discourses--not only because of the importance of their labor to the nation, but also because of their gender and domicile (the countryside was the centerpiece of state ideology and practice before and during the war, during the Occupation, and beyond). Under the Shadow of Nationalism explores the interconnectedness of nationalism and gender in the context of modern Japan. It combines the author's long-term field research with a painstaking examination of the documents behind these discourses produced at various levels of society, from the national (government records, social reformers' reports, ethnographic data) to the local (teachers' manuals, labor activists' accounts, village newspapers). It provides a wide-ranging yet in-depth look at a key group of Japanese women as national subjects through the critical chapters of Japanese modernity and postmodernity.

Book The One Minute Workout

Download or read book The One Minute Workout written by Martin Gibala and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally, the solution to the #1 reason we don’t exercise: time. Everyone has one minute. A decade ago, Martin Gibala was a young researcher in the field of exercise physiology—with little time to exercise. That critical point in his career launched a passion for high-intensity interval training (HIIT), allowing him to stay in shape with just a few minutes of hard effort. It also prompted Gibala to conduct experiments that helped launch the exploding science of ultralow-volume exercise. Now that he’s the worldwide guru of the science of time-efficient workouts, Gibala’s first book answers the ultimate question: How low can you go? Gibala’s fascinating quest for the answer makes exercise experts of us all. His work demonstrates that very short, intense bursts of exercise may be the most potent form of workout available. Gibala busts myths (“it’s only for really fit people”), explains astonishing science (“intensity trumps duration”), lays out time-saving life hacks (“exercise snacking”), and describes the fascinating health-promoting value of HIIT (for preventing and reversing disease). Gibala’s latest study found that sedentary people derived the fitness benefits of 150 minutes of traditional endurance training with an interval protocol that involved 80 percent less time and just three minutes of hard exercise per week. Including the eight best basic interval workouts as well as four microworkouts customized for individual needs and preferences (you may not quite want to go all out every time), The One-Minute Workout solves the number-one reason we don’t exercise: lack of time. Because everyone has one minute.

Book 21 Days to a Happy Health You

Download or read book 21 Days to a Happy Health You written by Daniela LaFace and published by Daniela LaFace. This book was released on with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to a very exciting, challenging and rewarding 21 days of your life. My Mind and Body Bootcamp program will completely transform the way you look at your body using fitness, intuitive eating, as well as mental and spiritual work. I have spent years working on myself, gaining weight, losing weight, having babies, and repeating the process. Depression, Bullying, Micro-Preemie children, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Postpartum Depression are a few of the major life altering issues I faced and never truly dealt with properly. This led to a variety of unsuccessful attempts at losing the emotional and stress induced weight I gained. This program is a starting point I wish I had so many years ago. I have never spent so much time on myself as I do now. Not when I was single, not when I had a boyfriend, definitely not once I got married, and who the hell has time when you have a baby? How selfish of me to want to spend time on myself (was my thinking back then) but how was I supposed to hold everyone else up if I can’t even hold myself together. It is only now that I have discovered the key to having it all without losing myself. This program takes a lot of work. You really need to be honest with yourself, dig down deep and trust that this process will work for you if you work at it. My hope is that you are able to devote 100% of yourself to this program to allow the transformation of yourself to unfold. I would love for you to dig deep and release all prior programming of who you are and why you “can’t”.

Book A Life Adrift

Download or read book A Life Adrift written by Soeda Azembo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Life Adrift, the memoir of balladeer-political activist Soeda Azembo (1872-1944), chronicles his life as one of Japan’s first modern mass entertainers and imparts an understanding of how ordinary people experienced and accommodated the tumult of life in prewar Japan. Azembo created enka songs sung by tenant farmers in rural hinterlands and factory hands in Tokyo and Osaka. Although his work is still largely unknown outside Japan, his poems and lyrics were so well known at his career’s peak that a single verse served as shorthand expressing popular attitudes about political corruption, sex scandals, spiralling prices, war, and love of motherland. As these categories attest, he embedded in his songs contemporary views on class conflict, gender relations, and racial attitudes toward international rivals. Ordinary people valued Azembo’s music because it was of them and for them. They also appreciated it for being distinctively modern and home-grown, qualities rare among the cultural innovations that flooded into Japan from the mid-nineteenth century. A Life Adrift stands out as the only memoir of its kind, one written first-hand by a leader in the world of enka singing.
