Book excerpt: Easton is located in the Lehigh Valley, which was known long ago as the "Entrance to the Grand Valley." It is the seat of Northampton County, which contains part of Bethlehem and many nearby boroughs and townships. Its location at the confluence of two rivers and various creeks made it a prized position for commerce and early settlement. An early Native American camping site for council, war, and hunting and fishing parties, it later became a major hub of government, industry, and culture. Historic Easton traces the evolution of a small frontier village to a large industrial center, spanning the years from the earliest settlements to the 1940s. At the dawn of its creation, Easton played a major role in the Walking Purchase of 1737. Later, Easton was the location of talks to end the French and Indian and the Revolutionary Wars. Notable figures, such as Benjamin Franklin, Teedyuscung, William Parsons, John Sullivan, and George Taylor, met to discuss the politics of these wars. By the early nineteenth century, Easton had become one of the first industrial centers in the region. By the time the city was incorporated in 1887, nearly eleven thousand people called Easton home.

Book excerpt: Frank Farr learned the hard way that a rip cord is not infallible when you have to open a parachute. He survived that lesson to spend six months in German prison camps after the "Massacre at Merseburg" Nov. 2, 1944. He notes here that young men sequestered away from all womankind don't always talk about girls. Starve them enough, and they talk about food instead. Read how World War II flyers in German prison camps passed the time (books, games music), what they talked about (food, girls and flying) and what they dreamed about (family, loved ones and freedom).

Book Rebel Bookseller

Download or read book Rebel Bookseller written by Andrew Laties and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-07-19 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revival of independent bookselling has already begun and is one of the amazing stories of our times. Bookseller Andy Laties wrote the first edition of Rebel Bookseller six years ago, hoping it would spark a movement. Now, with this second edition, Laties’s book can be a rallying cry for everyone who wants to better understand how the rise of the big bookstore chains led irrevocably to their decline, and how even in the face of electronic readers from three of America’s largest and most successful companies—Apple, Amazon, and Google—the movement to support locally owned independent stores, especially bookstores, is on the rise. From the mid-1980s to the present, Andy Laties has been an independent bookseller, starting out in Chicago, teaching along the way at the American Booksellers Association, and finally running the bookshop at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, Massachusetts. His innovations were adapted by Barnes & Noble, Zany Brainy, and scores of independent stores. In Rebel Bookseller, Laties tells how he got started, how he kept going, and why he believes independent bookselling has a great future. He alternates his narrative with short anecdotes, interludes between the chapters that give his credo as a bookseller. Along the way, he explains the growth of the chains, and throws in a treasure trove of tips for anyone who is considering opening up a bookstore. Rebel Bookseller is a must read for those in the book biz, a testament to the ingeniousness of one man man’s story of making a life out of his passionate commitment to books and bookselling.

Against all possible odds, General Washington's troops have prevailed against the world's mightiest military. Peter believes the time has come to win the peace, but when a former villager, married to a missing British officer, wants to come home, the townspeople don't exactly roll out the welcome mat. Meanwhile, newlywed Erin Miles Bassett is looking forward to a Hallmark-worthy Christmas while collaborating with a celebrated historian and author. She's experiencing a season most people would envy, and while life is just about perfect, getting everyone else to cooperate is like herding cats. A brash businessman blindsides her. A sudden illness threatens her holiday plans, and certain family members have very different ideas about the ideal Christmas. Join Peter and Erin as they discover the real blessing of the season isn't a stunning tree- but the Perfect Gift. Easton at Christmastide, a story of epic failure and amazing grace, is book five in the much-loved and award-winning Easton Series about two people, over two hundred years apart, joined by blood ties, parallel experiences, and a winsome town beckoning "come home." "This gentle read interweaves past and present to craft a story that makes you feel as if you've come home to Easton, even if you've never been there before. -Marlo Schalesky, award-winning author of Reaching for Wonder.
