Such diversifying approaches to subsistence are frequent among pastoralists. It is characteristic of the Beja and other people in the arid regions of Africa that their subsistence requires continuous involvement in several mutually supplementing activities. When they are not able to invest the needed amount of labour, or if the time schedule for the different activities is put out of sequence, the consequences can be devastating. The process whereby "traditional" Atmaan life has become gradually more difficult to live, culminating in the 1984-86 disaster, is linked to changes in their position in relation to the Sudanese economy as a whole, and to Sudan's place in international trade. But it is also kinked to the general desiccation of the African Sahel.

Amidst struggle for survival and expectations of heroic mothering, women face realities that challenge their ability to fulfill their prescribed roles. Even as the effects of modernity and development, global inequities, and exclusionary government policies challenge traditional ways of life in eastern Sudan and throughout many parts of Africa, reproductive traumas—infertility, miscarriage, children’s illnesses, and mortality—disrupt women’s reproductive health and impede their efforts to achieve the status that comes with fertility and motherhood. In Embodying Honor Amal Hassan Fadlalla finds that the female body is the locus of anxieties about foreign dangers and diseases, threats perceived to be disruptive to morality, feminine identities, and social well-being. As a “northern Sudanese” viewed as an outsider in this region of her native country, Fadlalla presents an intimate portrait and thorough analysis that offers an intriguing commentary on the very notion of what constitutes the “foreign.” Fadlalla shows how Muslim Hadendowa women manage health and reproductive suffering in their quest to become “responsible” mothers and valued members of their communities. Her historically grounded ethnography delves into women’s reproductive histories, personal narratives, and ritual logics to reveal the ways in which women challenge cultural understandings of gender, honor, and reproduction.

These two contentious policies are always a cloak for racism against the indigenous population of the country, have adversely contributed to schism between secularists and Islamists, fueled identity crisis and caused unimaginable human rights violations. The book discusses the early signs of conflict in the former Closed Districts and the harbinger of unforeseen crisis, which was predicted by a sagacious politician amid the stubbornness of Northern elites and the leaders of sectarian parties. In spite of the looming crises, these pre- and post-independence politicians were jockeying for power that was left over by the departing colonialists. This work also focuses on the conflict in each region of what was once classified as a Closed District and the brutal crackdown by the Khartoum regimes against defenseless civilians. The ferocity of civil war in every war-torn area caused the loss of lives and property, created thousands of internally displaced persons and drove thousands more into neighboring countries as refugees eking out a frugal living in refugee camps. The thesis also discusses peace initiatives, the stumbling blocks, their outcomes and failures to materialize into a concrete accord; it proposes how the crisis of governance in Sudan can be settled politically and peacefully once and for all.

No one can really predict the end of the suffering of people of Southern Sudan. Now the choice is ours. Do we accept slavery or become free men? Vote for the independence of Southern Sudan in the referendum.
