Book Aphids on the World s Herbaceous Plants and Shrubs 2 Volume Set

Download or read book Aphids on the World s Herbaceous Plants and Shrubs 2 Volume Set written by R. L. Blackman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 1460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aphids are well-known as pests of agriculture, horticulture and forestry, but they are also one of the most biologically interesting groups of plant-feeding insects, and thus have attracted the attention of biologists in many research fields such as ecology, biodiversity, physiology, behaviour and genetics. Following the successful format of previous books on the world's aphids by the same authors, these two volumes provide a comprehensive species-by-species account of the aphids on the world's herbaceous plants and shrubs. They can be used not only as an identification guide and information source for entomologists and taxonomists throughout the world, but also as a unique database for studies of biodiversity and insect-plant relationships. In all, 3120 aphid species in 340 genera are covered, feeding on 2150 genera of host plants. Volume 1 features comprehensive host lists and keys to the aphids colonizing each plant genus. This information is supplemented in Volume 2 by a systematic account of all the aphid species, which provides information on their appearance in life, host range, geographical distribution and life cycles. There are 357 original line drawings, 252 photographs of slide-mounted specimens and 1000 references. Aphids on the World's Herbaceous Plants and Shrubs is the culmination of many years of work by two leading specialists and provides an essential research tool and standard reference work for entomologists in universities and research institutes throughout the world.

Book Aphids as Plant Pests From Biology to Green Control Technology

Download or read book Aphids as Plant Pests From Biology to Green Control Technology written by Julian Chen and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea) are one of the most important and destructive agriculture pests causing serious economic losses by both nutrient robbing and transmitting plant viruses. 100 species of Aphididae have exploited the agricultural environment successfully to the extent that they are of significant economic importance, among them 15 aphid species of most agricultural importance. Aphids are piecing-sucking insect pests with the mouthparts (stylets) to penetrate plant cells to feed phloem sap from sieve elements. The feeding process of aphids is similar to pathogen infestation, and plenty of evidence demonstrate that the interplay between aphid and host plants follows the pathogen-plant Zigzag model. During the process of probing and feeding, aphids, like plant pathogens, secreted some salivary proteins as effectors (or elicitors) into their host plants cell intercellularly and intracellularly to mediate aphid-plant interactions, such as eliciting or suppressing plant defense responses. Aphids also vector plant viruses, and the relationship between each organismal pair affects the overall outcome of this biological interaction. Aphids contained endosymbionts, and the symbionts influence interaction between the aphids and their host plants and between aphids and their natural enemies, further impacting this network of biological interactions. Advances in understanding aphids biology, and these interactions at the physiological, molecular, and ecological levels will provide fundamental knowledge, and develop novel green control strategies for insect pests as well as vector pathogens.

Book Insects of Eastern Pines

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur H. Rose
  • Publisher : Miscellaneous Report / Geologi
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Insects of Eastern Pines written by Arthur H. Rose and published by Miscellaneous Report / Geologi. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is designed to enable people who are interested in trees to identify the insects and mites causing damage to them. About 90 species of insects and mites that have caused noteworthy damage to pines in Canada east of the Rocky Mountains are included. The insect and/or its damage can be identified by means of flow chart keys, and the identity of the insect or mite can be confirmed by reference to about 190 colour illustrations. The accompanying biological sketch for each insect or mite usually includes information, based largely on Fores Insect and Disease Survey records, on necessity for control. Where control is necessary, methods are suggested. Common names of insects are generally used, but scientific names are also given in the text.
