Book excerpt: The town of East Windsor, incorporated in 1768, is situated in the center of northern Connecticut, with the Connecticut River as its western border. In the early 1600s, a few settlers crossed the "great river" to establish farms. East Windsor's rich and productive farmland served them well. Five distinct villages, each historically different, highlight the rich and diverse heritage of the town. Warehouse Point, with its proximity to the river, was a vital shipping and transportation hub. Scantic was started by a strong religious community devoted to God and families. Broad Brook had access to the millpond, which spurred the prosperous Broad Brook Company woolen mill. Melrose, established by farming families, is rooted in its agrarian past. Windsorville's location on the banks of Ketch Brook triggered villagers to build a dam and erect mills. Through it all ran the trolley line, which linked the villages and town with the surrounding area.

Located in the easternmost pocket of Mercer County, New Jersey, Hightstown traces its beginnings to 1747, when John Hight bought an 80-acre parcel alongside Rocky Brook. He built a gristmill there, abutting the road that became Main Street. The mill attracted other small enterprises, including a dry goods store, two taverns, a blacksmith shop, and sawmill. With the rise of the steam engine, the town grew to become a thriving transportation hub. As this community evolved into a contemporary downtown corridor, the farms and homes spread across what is today both the borough and East Windsor Township. The advent of the automobile, retirement of the rail line, and construction of the New Jersey Turnpike challenged Hightstown's role as a destination. With a recently established historic district and strong downtown association, the town is enjoying a rebirth as a treasure of America's past and present.

Tracing the growth of the two cities' cross-border prostitution and heroin markets in the late 1940s and the 1950s, Sin City North explores the social, legal, and national boundaries that emerged there and their ramifications. In bars, brothels, and dance halls, Canadians and Americans were united in their desire to cross racial, sexual, and legal lines in the border cities. Yet the increasing visibility of illicit economies on city streets—and the growing number of African American and French Canadian women working in illegal trades—provoked the ire of moral reformers who mobilized to eliminate them from their communities. It contains 38 chapters about important people, places and events in the history of Windsor Locks. Windsor Locks history goes from 1663, when the first settlers reached the Pine Meadow section of the town of Windsor, CT. In 1854, the Pine Meadow section of WIndsor was incorporated into the separate town of Windsor Locks. So the history of WIndsor Locks goes from 1663 to the current time (2022), which is about three and a half centuries. The first two books of this series present chapters on important people, places and events in that history. Windsor Locks History: Volume III presents a number of sets of photo of the town taken from about 1880 to 1960, and as well as more descriptive chapters. The fourth book in the series is "Understanding Windsor Locks History", which focusses on the overeall structure of that history, dividing the three and a half centuries into four distinct phases that the town's evolution that the tow has gone through. It presents "chronological historiies" of the town by three different people, and ties together the stories of the first three books to the chronological history of the town. Descriptive histories give detailed accounts of the people, places and events, while the chronological histories list the events in the order in which they occurred. You can read either approach first, but tying the two together results in a deeper understanding of the town's history.
