Book excerpt: This book is a unique and detailed account of a rural way of life formed from extensive academic research and oral testimony recorded in the 1970's. It tells of the farm servant system in East Yorkshire which was central to the rural economy in that area for men born before 1900. Boys as young as 13 would be looking after and working with as many as 4 heavy horses in a team. Their lives would be spent living in the farmhouse and would continue that way until they married. Rural history forms an essential part of national history, with different parts of the UK having very varied employment systems. This book describes how, although having roots deep in history, the East Riding farming system was thoroughly modern and profitable, paying good wages to its workers. Telling the stories of their lives in their own words, this book brings to life the intimate details of a distant way of living and working.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering the minor settlements of England's Danelaw--villages known as thorps or throps--this history demonstrates how place-name evidence can be used to understand early cultures. By integrating linguistic and archaeological approaches, it establishes a compelling connection between the creation of these place-names and the fundamental changes taking place in the English landscape between AD 850 and 1250. The integral role of thorps in revolutionizing agricultural practice at that time is thoroughly analyzed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early medieval ship burial at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, whose discovery in 1938 yielded such rich treasures, posed many questions about the history of England in the shadowy period from the 5th to the 11th century. This one-volume edition of the annual bulletins of the recent archaeological campaign (1983-92), directed by Martin Carver, shows how the dig succeeded in establishing a context for those earlier finds, extending knowledge of the culture and society of the age.
Download or read book The B T H and North British Type 1 Bo Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives British Railways Classes 15 and 16 written by Anthony P. Sayer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Railways ‘Pilot Scheme’ orders of 1955 included ten BTH and ten NBL Type 1 locomotives, these being introduced during 1957-61 for use in East London, and on the Great Eastern and London, Tilbury & Southend lines. The BTH fleet subsequently expanded to forty-four, as a consequence of their light axle-loading and the availability of spare manufacturing capacity which BR chose to exploit in their quest to eliminate steam traction. Further construction of these two classes ceased after the fifty-four units, with preference being given to the highly reliable English Electric product which by mid-1962 had proliferated to 128 examples. The NBL fleet survived until 1968, being withdrawn after ten years of indifferent performance. The BTH locomotives followed by 1971, although four lingered on as carriage pre-heating units. Dramatic reductions in goods traffic during the 1960s/70s particularly impacted local trip and transfer freight duties, the ‘bread and butter’ work for the Type 1s, and it was inevitable that the less successful classes were retired from traffic first. This book looks at the short history of these two classes, making extensive use of archive sources, combined with the primary observations of numerous enthusiasts. Previously unpublished information, covering the introduction, appearance design and performance issues of the locomotives, form a central focus, and, allocations, works histories, storage and disposals, liveries and detail differences are covered in the same level of detail as previous volumes in the ‘Locomotive Portfolio” series.
Download or read book Small Firms in Urban and Rural Locations written by James Curran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When originally published in 1993 this book was one of the first to present a systematic comparison of small enterprises in both urban and rural areas in contemporary Britain. Key issues such as relative performance levels and the relevance of recent develoopments to the economy as a whole are discussed by well-known contributors. Throughout, insights derived from dialogues with real entrepreneurs are provided. An internatinal dimension is added with a comparative discussion of the problems of rurality suffered in many areas of North America and Europe, and the continuing effects of the recession of the late 80s and early 90s are also examined and important policy recommendations made.
