Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lamp of Lothian, or the History of Haddington: In Connection With the Public Affairs of East Lothian and of Scotland From the Earliest Records to the Present Period William appears to have been pacified for a short time by a grant of the earldom of Huntington, for which he did homage to the younger Henry as the vassal of England, and afterwards re signed it to his brother David, who performed the ceremonies of the vassal on the same occasion. The Prince of England having taken up arms against his father in 1173, William joined his standard, for which he received a grant of the long contested earldom of Northumberland as far as the southern Tyne, while David was rewarded with the earldom of Cambridge. The grants of a rebellious prince, however, are of no moment. After invading England, and laying siege to Werk and Carlisle without effect, William returned from a fruitless devastation, and like an um bitions soldier of fortune of the present day, brought the invaded into his own country, who laid waste the lowlands of Scotland. Book Lost East Lothian

Download or read book Lost East Lothian written by Craig Statham and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Lothian, a unitary authority area including the old county of Haddingtonshire, is one of Scotland's most historic places - John Knox was born in Haddington in the early years of the sixteenth century; important links were forged with the Low Coutries as a result of trade; and because of its location between Edinburgh and the border with England, the area was razed frequently by English troops. Significant battles were fought within its boundaries, most notably at Dunbar in 1560 and Prestonpans in 1745. It is also a land of huge contrasts, with sandy beaches, majestic sea cliffs, rolling farmland and barren moor, geographical features which have heavily influenced the life and industry of its inhabitants over the centuries. In this beautifully illustrated book, featuring over 100 old photographs, maps and prints, Craig Statham explores an enormous range of lost buildings which have been central to all aspects of the history of the county over a period of thousands of years, but which now no longer exist, lie in ruins or are no longer used for their original function. Grouped by theme, the book includes all types of lost buildings, from castles, mansion houses, streets and even whole villages to hospitals, factories, churches, schools, hotels and even swimming pools.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lamp of Lothian, or the History of Haddington, in Connection With the Public Affairs of East Lothian and of Scotland, From the Earliest Records to 1844: With Biographical Sketch of the Author So many of the old Scots famin-s, that bear the lion rampant' on the shield, are supposed to derive that hearing from the Royal Arms whereas they do so as scions or vassals of the great Cospatricks, Earls of Dunbar. This family, which for centuries dominated the Merse and East Lothian, traces its descent from the Saxon Royal Family of England, and it carries the mind back to the dim distance when we remember that the almost shadowy King Duncan, the gentle Duncan of Shakespeare's Macbeth, married Ethelreda, a daughter of the first Earl of that name. It is from this family that the Homes, Dunbars, Dundasscs, Maitlands, Edgars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Terrestrial Ecosystems Through Time

Download or read book Terrestrial Ecosystems Through Time written by Anna K. Behrensmeyer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1992-08-15 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breathtaking in scope, this is the first survey of the entire ecological history of life on land—from the earliest traces of terrestrial organisms over 400 million years ago to the beginning of human agriculture. By providing myriad insights into the unique ecological information contained in the fossil record, it establishes a new and ambitious basis for the study of evolutionary paleoecology of land ecosystems. A joint undertaking of the Evolution of Terrestrial Ecosystems Consortium at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, and twenty-six additional researchers, this book begins with four chapters that lay out the theoretical background and methodology of the science of evolutionary paleoecology. Included are a comprehensive review of the taphonomy and paleoenvironmental settings of fossil deposits as well as guidelines for developing ecological characterizations of extinct organisms and the communities in which they lived. The remaining three chapters treat the history of terrestrial ecosystems through geological time, emphasizing how ecological interactions have changed, the rate and tempo of ecosystem change, the role of exogenous "forcing factors" in generating ecological change, and the effect of ecological factors on the evolution of biological diversity. The six principal authors of this volume are all associated with the Evolution of Terrestrial Ecosystems program at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
