  • Author : Steven James Foreman

Download or read book The Valley of Volcanoes written by Steven James Foreman and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tanzanian part of The Great Rift Valley is called Gregory Rift. It is named for John Walter Gregory, who visited central Kenya in 1893 and again in 1919. His 1896 book The Great Rift Valley is considered a classic. Gregory was the first to use the term 'rift valley', which he defined as “a linear valley with parallel and almost vertical sides, which has fallen owing to a series of parallel faults”. Along the length of the Rift Valley lie several volcanoes; some extinct, some dormant, and one active. The most famous of all is Mount Kilimanjaro, but there are other mountains too: these are Mount Meru, Mount Elgon, Mount Hanang and the active volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai. Although these are non-technical climbs (i.e. not requiring harnesses, ropes, crampons, etc.,), make no mistake; these are real 'climbs' on real mountains and not mere strolls up hills. (The climbs to the summits of the Ruwenzori Mountains and Mount Kenya are or can be technical above the snow line, but, if you do not take your own, then the in-country climbing outfitters will supply the technical equipment needed). This little book gives a Mountain Leader's insight to the climbs and shows readers what the tour company glossy brochures do not!
