Book excerpt: Haven Prime: Book One The world is gone. All that’s left are the monsters. The creatures attacked Haven VII with no warning. An AI named Kyrios, a nearly omnipotent being, should have protected the city during the Night of the Swarm. Except It didn’t. No one knows why It failed, or why It saved eight specific people: the Captain, the Seer, the Sentry, the Messenger, the Engineer, the Alchemist, the Medic, and the Stewardess. They have no idea of the meaning behind the titles they’ve been given, why they were selected and brought together, or what Kyrios expects from them. When they awake from stasis, they find their city in ruins and everyone long dead. They’re alone—or so they think. But then the creatures start pouring out from underground, looking for them. They don’t stand a chance in a fight, and with limited supplies, they can’t run forever. All they know is that the creatures aren’t their only enemies, and there’s only one place they can turn. Kyrios beckons them toward Its Portal, but can It be trusted? In Its isolated shrine in the desert, they might find the answers they need—if they can survive long enough to reach it.

Dora Carridine is trying to summon a demon, but she's not very good at Latin and nothing ever works out the way she plans. Her life is fraught with weekly exorcisms and having to watch her father’s fire and brimstone TV show every Sunday. So, when Dora finally succeeds in summoning an incompetent demon lord, she’s absolutely delighted when all hell breaks loose. She thought summoning a sexy demon lord would be the answer to all of her problems, but her problems are only just beginning when her zealot parents try to burn her at the stake, and Dora is left with only one option—to escape and follow her demon straight into Hell. “Wildly, bizarrely, brain-punchingly inventive!” – Derek Landy, bestselling author of Skulduggery Pleasant. DISCOVER THE DEMON DIARIES, WHICH HAS SPELLBOUND 2.5 MILLION READERS. WHAT READERS ARE SAYING “I love how Claire Chilton keeps your pulse racing until the end of the book. The addictive writing plus amusing characters and supernatural stories in these books create an unforgettable read.” ★★★★★ “If you are looking for an action-packed and funny gothic fiction series with a strong female lead to completely immerse yourself in, then this might be the book series for you.” ★★★★★ “The descriptions in this hilarious occult series are rich with meaning, and the parody of preternatural characters are brilliantly human.” ★★★★★ “I love Dora! Her sarcasm manages to amuse me whether she’s being tortured in the academy for demons in Hell or just arguing with the Fallen One in Heaven. Great world building, and the best and most sarcastic characters.” ★★★★★ “Claire Chilton not only conjures a YA fantasy world brimming with magical creatures like vampires, werewolves, zombies, angels, demons, succubus, dragons, elves, fae, fairies, ghosts, gods, shapeshifters and a whole range of mythical monsters, she also creates a few of her own. Were-squirrels, anyone?” ★★★★★ “If you’re looking for a dark teen comedy that is the goth lovechild of Deadpool and Buffy, then look no further. The novels in this series are fast-paced, dogma-driven, satires that focus on an outcast teenage girl who uses witty banter and a spellbook to become a witch and travel to Hell and back. With light humour and a lot of lols along the way, this Sabrina-like heroine explores the horror of death and darkness in even the most heavenly places.” ★★★★★ “An entertaining, humorous and romantic paranormal novel that kept me up past midnight because I couldn’t put it down.” ★★★★★ “When the demon lord you’re dating takes you home to meet his undead family, and then you’re forced to attend school in Hell, you know the romance is going to get a bit weird. This was a fun unearthly romp that will make you laugh out loud. The first story is a bit short, but it’s also free. The stories aren’t overly romantic, so they’re great for older teenage boys and girls.” ★★★★★ “Deliciously thrilling and wickedly silly from the grave and back! If you’re tired of depressed heroines, then enjoy this feisty female protagonist as she travels on the road to Hell with nothing but her spells, soul chips and wits to keep her alive.” ★★★★★ “A must-read series of sorcery, comedy, witches and demons. Book excerpt: Did you keep a diary during your teen years? Do you have a box of loopy-cursive, never-sent notes to your crush? Or some overwrought poetry about your bleak existence? An unfinished rockopera? Well, you’re not alone, and inCringe, you’ll find a reason to unearth your adolescent angst and have a good laugh—at yourself. A compilation of real teenage diary and journal entries, letters, songs, stories, and lists—along with biting commentary, background, and self-examination from the now so-called grown-ups who wrote them—Cringeoffers a voyeuristic glimpse at the roller coaster of youth in all of its navel-gazing, soul-searching, social-skewering glory. Cringe -worthy excerpts include Really bad poetry: I lumber like the sad clown with the hope that my performance might make you smile. Yet I am a flickering star over a cloudy sky. Blush-inducing pep talks: OK. It’s the end of February. No more kidding around! You have to go out with someone! You haven’t gone out with someone since the summer! At least fool around with someone! Come on! You’ve got it in ya! Questionable motivations: My mom is madly in love with her boyfriend. . . . Cool! He’s so rich . . . I could get a lot out of this— vacations, a car—if he buys my mom one + she gives me hers—psyche! And rages against the world at large: I am living in a dream world. Wishes are a bunch of crap. They never come true so what’s the use of even wasting your time hoping they’ll come true when they don’t? Inspired by the New York–based reading series of the same name,Cringewill help you realize that being a grown-up isn’t all that terrible. At least you don’t have to worry about who’s going to be at the mall anymore.

Book Hoover s War on Gays

  • Author : Douglas M. Charles
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2015-09-18
  • ISBN : 0700621199

Download or read book Hoover s War on Gays written by Douglas M. Charles and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the FBI, the “Sex Deviates” program covered a lot of ground, literally; at its peak, J. Edgar Hoover’s notorious “Sex Deviates” file encompassed nearly 99 cubic feet or more than 330,000 pages of information. In 1977–1978 these files were destroyed—and it would seem that four decades of the FBI’s dirty secrets went up in smoke. But in a remarkable feat of investigative research, synthesis, and scholarly detective work, Douglas M. Charles manages to fill in the yawning blanks in the bureau’s history of systematic (some would say obsessive) interest in the lives of gay and lesbian Americans in the twentieth century. His book, Hoover’s War on Gays, is the first to fully expose the extraordinary invasion of US citizens’ privacy perpetrated on a historic scale by an institution tasked with protecting American life. For much of the twentieth century, when exposure might mean nothing short of ruin, gay American men and women had much to fear from law enforcement of every kind—but none so much as the FBI, with its inexhaustible federal resources, connections, and its carefully crafted reputation for ethical, by-the-book operations. What Hoover’s War on Gays reveals, rather, is the FBI’s distinctly unethical, off-the-books long-term targeting of gay men and women and their organizations under cover of “official” rationale—such as suspicion of criminal activity or vulnerability to blackmail and influence. The book offers a wide-scale view of this policy and practice, from a notorious child kidnapping and murder of the 1930s (ostensibly by a sexual predator with homosexual tendencies), educating the public about the threat of “deviates,” through WWII’s security concerns about homosexuals who might be compromised by the enemy, to the Cold War’s “Lavender Scare” when any and all gays working for the US government shared the fate of suspected Communist sympathizers. Charles’s work also details paradoxical ways in which these incursions conjured counterefforts—like the Mattachine Society; ONE, Inc.; and the Daughters of Bilitis—aimed at protecting and serving the interests of postwar gay culture. With its painstaking recovery of a dark chapter in American history and its new insights into seemingly familiar episodes of that story—involving noted journalists, politicians, and celebrities—this thorough and deeply engaging book reveals the perils of authority run amok and stands as a reminder of damage done in the name of decency.

Book excerpt: Who is Zhao Xun? For those around him, the answer to this question is unclear. In KMT-occupied Kunming, Yunnan Province, a mist of uncertainty has already filled the air, and false names have become the norm. With the city’s liberation at the hands of the Communist Army, this trend only intensifies. My Country, My Blood traces the life story of former KMT officer who spends his entire life living in Yunnan. It relays stories of opera troupes operating behind the frontlines, student groups resisting tyrannical governments, and the reshuffling of the social order that followed the Chinese Civil War. Grand in scope, My Country, My Blood pushes through the period of establishing a new government clear through to the time of healing marked by China’s Opening Up to the world. Along the way, you will slowly piece together the puzzle of shifting pseudonyms, discovering who the characters actually are and the complicated, twisting paths that bring them together amid the throes of war. Painting a vibrant picture of how China came to be what it is today, My Country, My Blood is a story of war, revolution, and healing.
