Book Quaternary Tectonics of Utah with Emphasis on Earthquake hazard Characterization

Download or read book Quaternary Tectonics of Utah with Emphasis on Earthquake hazard Characterization written by Suzanne Hecker and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1993-01-13 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report consolidates and synthesizes information on Quaternary faulting, folding, and volcanism in Utah and characterizes recent tectonic activity throughout the state. The primary purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference on fault-specific seismic sources and surface rupture to facilitate the evaluation of earthquake hazards in Utah. Two 1:500,000-scale maps show Quaternary tectonic features categorized according to probable ages of most recent surface deformation and ages of volcanic rocks. Two appendix tables summarize significant data on the activity of mapped features, including ages of surface displacements and volcanism, slip rates, recurrence intervals, displacement amounts, and lengths of surface ruptures. Good age control and quantitative activity data are available for relatively few tectonic features in Utah and detailed work is needed in many areas of the state. 157 pages + 2 plates

Book excerpt: Recent seismological research has focused on processes other than pure shear failure (double-couple) as an alternative mechanism for some types of seismic events. This has been stimulated by what appears to be anomalous focal mecha nisms observed for several earthquakes of possible volcanic nature in the 1980 Mammoth Lakes, California sequence (JULIAN and SIPKIN, 1985; SIPKIN, 1986). Although studies have concentrated on earthquakes associated with magmatic processes, possible non-double-couple seismic failure has been observed, but not widely known, in cases of mine seismicity in the past three decades. Such cases have occurred on a world-wide basis; however, no cases until now have been observed in the United States. The existence of non-double-couple failure in mine seismicity has been controversial as it has been for tectonic/volcanic earthquakes. Several of the benchmark studies of mine seismicity in the deep South African gold mines have resulted in the belief that no fundamental distinction in the source mechanism exists between tectonic earthquakes and rock bursts (MCGARR, 1984); both types of events are the result of pure shear failure. However, the reported cases of implo sional focal mechanisms for mine seismicity continue to increase in number and prolong the controversy. During the summer of 1984, a three-dimensional, high resolution micro earthquake network was operated by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) in the vicinity of two coal mines beneath Gentry Mountain in the eastern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah.

Book Fundamentals of Earthquake Resistant Construction

Download or read book Fundamentals of Earthquake Resistant Construction written by Ellis L. Krinitzsky and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1993-01-12 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for engineers without a background in seismic design. Provides design standards and parameters, explaining how to interpret and apply them. Examines and recommends procedures to accommodate the enormous forces and variations in effects common to major earthquakes. Covers practical aspects of soil behavior and structural and foundation design. Gives tips on special construction situations: foundations, dams and retaining walls, strengthening existing structures and construction over active faults.
