Book Slope movements of the earthflow type engineering geological investigation geotechnical assessment and modelling of the source areas on the basis of case studies from the Alps and Apennines

Download or read book Slope movements of the earthflow type engineering geological investigation geotechnical assessment and modelling of the source areas on the basis of case studies from the Alps and Apennines written by Winfried Schädler and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2011 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with natural slope-movements of the earthflow-type. The main thematic focus of the work is on the investigation of the so-called source areas located in the upper parts of the affected slopes. On the basis of two present-day and socio-economically relevant case studies in Northern Italy selected aspects of the source areas were investigated. This was done mainly by means of numerical modelling. In one case study the numerical modelling concept was combined with an inverse modelling strategy. Generally, the results obtained in both case studies demonstrate the importance of detailed field investigations as basis for numerical models. The determinateness of the modelled problem depends on the availability of such data, which is limited by the large dimensions of the investigated phenomena and by the heterogeneity of the involved materials as well as the uncertainties underlying the determination of the geometry of these problems.

Book Geomorphology and Engineering

Download or read book Geomorphology and Engineering written by Donald R. Coates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the project is river engineering, soil mapping for landuse planning, or control of landslides, this volume, first published in 1976, illustrates that the professional partnership between geomorphology and engineering can significantly minimize environmental damage. The papers here were presented at the 7th Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium, and using the broad viewpoint of the planner, much new ground is covered: landfill design, prediction of geomorphic processes and their effects, and minimization of streamflow distortion.

Book Landslide Hazards Risks and Disasters

Download or read book Landslide Hazards Risks and Disasters written by Tim Davies and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-10-17 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landslide Hazards, Risks and Disasters Second Edition makes a broad but detailed examination of major aspects of mass movements and their consequences, and provides knowledge to form the basis for more complete and accurate monitoring, prediction, preparedness and reduction of the impacts of landslides on society. The frequency and intensity of landslide hazards and disasters has consistently increased over the past century, and this trend will continue as society increasingly utilises steep landscapes. Landslides and related phenomena can be triggered by other hazard and disaster processes – such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and wildfires – and they can also cause other hazards and disasters, making them a complex multi-disciplinary challenge. This new edition of Landslide Hazards, Risks and Disasters is updated and includes new chapters, covering additional topics including rockfalls, landslide interactions and impacts and geomorphic perspectives. Knowledge, understanding and the ability to model landslide processes are becoming increasingly important challenges for society extends its occupation of increasingly hilly and mountainous terrain, making this book a key resource for educators, researchers and disaster managers in geophysics, geology and environmental science. - Provides an interdisciplinary perspective on the geological, seismological, physical, environmental and social impacts of landslides - Presents the latest research on causality, impacts and landslide preparedness and mitigation. Includes numerous tables, maps, diagrams, illustrations, photographs and video captures of hazardous processes - Discusses steps for planning for and responding to landslide hazards, risks and disasters
