Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rewind to the 1950s and ponder: was America's first satellite really built by a college student? How did a small band of underappreciated Russian engineers get pictures of the moon's far side--using stolen American film? As the 1960s progressed, consider: how the heck did people learn to steer a spacecraft using nothing but gravity? And just how were humans able to goose a spaceship through a thirty-year journey to the literal edge of our solar system? Ambassadors from Earth relates the story of the first unmanned space probes and planetary explorers--from the Sputnik and Explorer satellites launched in the late 1950s to the thrilling interstellar Voyager missions of the '70s--that yielded some of the most celebrated successes and spectacular failures of the space age. Keep in mind that our first mad scrambles to reach orbit, the moon, and the planets were littered with enough histrionics and cliffhanging turmoil to rival the most far-out sci-fi film. Utilizing original interviews with key players, bolstered by never-before-seen photographs, journal excerpts, and primary source documents, Jay Gallentine delivers a quirky and unforgettable look at the lives and legacy of the Americans and Soviets who conceived, built, and guided those unmanned missions to the planets and beyond. Of special note is his in-depth interview with James Van Allen, the discoverer of the rings of planetary radiation that now bear his name. Ambassadors from Earth is an engaging bumper-car ride through a fog of head-banging uncertainty, bleeding-edge technology, personality clashes, organizational frustrations, brutal schedules, and the occasional bright spot. Confessed one participant, "We were making it up as we went along."

Book The Ambassadors

Download or read book The Ambassadors written by Jonathan Wright and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2006 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book of extraordinary journeys and epochal encounters, Jonathan Wright traces the ambassadors' story from Ancient Greece and Ashoka's empire in India to the European Enlightenment and the birth of the nation state. He shows us Byzantine envoys dining with Attila the Hun, thirteenth-century monks journeying from Flanders to the Asian steppe, and Tudor ambassadors grappling with the chaos of Reformation. He examines the rituals and institutions of diplomacy, asking - for instance - why it was felt necessary to send an elephant from Baghdad to Aachen in 801 A.D. And he explores diplomacy's dangers, showing us terrified, besieged ambassadors surviving on horsemeat and champagne in 1900s Beijing."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Gabe Fuentes is in for the ride of his life when he becomes Earth’s ambassador to the galaxy in this alien sci-fi adventure from the National Book Award–winning author of Goblin Secrets. Gabe Fuentes is reading under the covers one summer night when he is interrupted by a creature who looks like a purple sock puppet. The sock puppet introduces himself as the Envoy and asks if Gabe wants to be Earth’s ambassador to the galaxy. What sane eleven-year-old could refuse? Some ingenious tinkering with the washing machine sends Gabe’s “entangled” self out to the center of the galaxy. There he finds that Earth is in the path of a destructive alien force—and Gabe himself is the target of an assassination plot. Exactly who wants him out of the way? And why? Back home, Gabe discovers that his undocumented immigrant parents are in danger of being deported. Can Gabe survive long enough to solve two sets of “alien” problems? He runs for his life, through Minneapolis and outer space, in this fast-paced adventure from a National Book Award–winning author. “Physics lovers will enjoy this clever series opener—but so will those who enjoy comedy, politics, diplomacy or strange-looking aliens” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

Book The Ambassadors

Download or read book The Ambassadors written by Paul Richter and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veteran diplomatic correspondent Paul Richter goes behind the battles and the headlines to show how American ambassadors are the unconventional warriors in the Muslim world—running local government, directing drone strikes, building nations, and risking their lives on the front lines. The tale’s heroes are a small circle of top career diplomats who have been an unheralded but crucial line of national defense in the past two decades of wars in the greater Middle East. In The Ambassadors, Paul Richter shares the astonishing, true-life stories of four expeditionary diplomats who “do the hardest things in the hardest places.” The book describes how Ryan Crocker helped rebuild a shattered Afghan government after the fall of the Taliban and secretly negotiated with the shadowy Iranian mastermind General Qassim Suleimani to wage war in Afghanistan and choose new leaders for post-invasion Iraq. Robert Ford, assigned to be a one-man occupation government for an Iraqi province, struggled to restart a collapsed economy and to deal with spiraling sectarian violence—and was taken hostage by a militia. In Syria at the eruption of the civil war, he is chased by government thugs for defying the country’s ruler. J. Christopher Stevens is smuggled into Libya as US Envoy to the rebels during its bloody civil war, then returns as ambassador only to be killed during a terror attach in Benghazi. War-zone veteran Anne Patterson is sent to Pakistan, considered the world’s most dangerous country, to broker deals that prevent a government collapse and to help guide the secret war on jihadists. “An important and illuminating read” (The Washington Post) and the winner of the prestigious Douglas Dillon Book Award from the American Academy of Diplomacy, The Ambassadors is a candid examination of the career diplomatic corps, America’s first point of contact with the outside world, and a critical piece of modern-day history.

Book excerpt: Ambassadors of Christ commemorates 150 years of theological education in Cuddesdon with a collection of substantial essays. It begins with a discussion by Mark Chapman of the revival of theology and education in the early years of the nineteenth century. This is followed by essays by Alastair Redfern on Samuel Wilberforce as a pastoral theologian and a revision by Andrew Atherstone of Owen Chadwick’s Centenary History in the light of more recent historical research, bringing the discussion up to the 1880s. For the first time, Ripon Hall, which merged with Cuddesdon in 1975, receives a thorough and detailed historical treatment by Michael Brierley. Mark Chapman then discusses the 1960s under Robert Runcie, and a final chapter by Robert Jeffery deals with the theological and churchmanship issues which emerged from the merger. Two marvellous sermons preached at College Festivals by Michael Ramsey and Owen Chadwick are also reproduced in appendices. This special commemorative volume will appeal to past and present students as well as specialists in nineteenth and twentieth-century church history and all those interested in ministerial education and spiritual formation. After returning from the Amazon rainforest, Katty and Jake join their schoolteacher, Miss Violet in a perilous journey into space to investigate the damage to the ozone layer. Readers get various perspectives including that of pollutants and a couple of nosey aliens. With these elements, the story, like the first, has many aspects that are enjoyed by children in the current market. Again, the biggest strength of the author's writing is the conviction behind how children can be part of shaping a better and greener future. The educational value of the story is clear and therefore could easily be used in schools to teach children the science around the ozone layer, greenhouse gases and global warming. Overall, it's a fun story about family but also about standing up for the environmental issues you believe in.

Book PROPHETS AMBASSADORS OF ETERNAL SALVATION FROM THE CREATION OF HUMANITY TO THE DAY

This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we came to this world, it means we will be tested. If we are to be tested, of course, guides will come to us who will explain the nature of this world and show us the path to eternal happiness. Therefore, the lives of the prophets are very important to us. As it is known, Almighty God sent prophets to people from among themselves from time to time. Some people followed these holy prophets and thus gained happiness in both this world and the hereafter and they established orderly civilizations and achieved virtues. Others opposed these holy prophets and acted contrary to them. With this attitude, they were deprived of true humanity and preferred disbelief to faith and disgrace to virtue. All prophets came with the same truths. They are all links in a single chain. The next religion confirmed and completed the previous one. Ultimately, this adventure, which started with the prophet Adam, continued with Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus, and was completed with the last prophet, Muhammad. The prophets to whom the divine book was sent are Moses, David, Jesus and Muhammad. Information about the lives of the prophets reveals their good deeds, shows how they called their ummah to religion, and records some events their. By learning the history of the prophets, we will understand why God created us.

Book Visions of Righteousness of God

Download or read book Visions of Righteousness of God written by Dr Danson Enogiomwan Ubebe and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of Righteousness of God is a fascinating insight into religion, providing the reader with an enlightened understanding of events relating to Christianity and who created God. Beginning with the structure of the spirit, soul and body this book suggests a return to the gospel of grace as never been known until now. This book looks at the invisible and visible world, as well as the trajectory of the fall of Satan and man from their home lands respectively. Focussing on other events such as the judgement, the second coming of Christ and the demise of the current world, this book contrasts from other religious books in its genre as it testifies to the scripture which declared that the things which are seen were not made from the things visible (Heb. 11:3). Written for every level of scholarship and reading age, this is a testimony of the goodness of God. A visionary book that is both unique and extraordinary in equal measure, echoing the message of the Holy Bible.

Book The Big Book of Magical Incense

Download or read book The Big Book of Magical Incense written by Sara L. Mastros and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A masterwork of botanical lore. --Amy Blackthorn, author of Blackthorn’s Botanical Magic The Big Book of Magical Incense is an invaluable hands-on guide to the vast world of magical incense. It provides tried-and-true recipes, advice on how to create your own formulas, and instructions on how to use incense in all sorts of magical practice. While the book requires no prerequisite knowledge, it is also appropriate for experienced magicians and learned pagans. The chapters are scaffolded, teaching about basic ingredients and skills, both practical and magical, in early chapters, and gently leading the reader to develop their own recipes, spells, and ritual practices as they move through the book. Presented in a paradigm-agnostic way, the book should appeal to people on numerous paths. Ceremonial magicians and sorcerers will appreciate the planetary incense recipes and translations from the Greek magical papyri and other classical magic texts. Folk magicians will appreciate the many magical incense formulas, such as Go Away! and Money Magnet. Animists will love the focus on ingredients native to the United States, and the instructions for working with the dead and the spirits of the land. Devotional pagans will find recipes for a variety of gods, particularly those of the Eastern Mediterranean traditions, some of whose chapters include original translations of the Orphic hymns and other devotional poetry. Chaos magicians will be excited about the flexibility to mix and match practices and recipes throughout the book.
