Book One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe

Download or read book One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe written by William Carpenter and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much may be gathered, indirectly, from the arguments in these pages, as to the real nature of the Earth on which we live and of the heavenly bodies which were created for us. The reader is requested to be patient in this matter and not expect a whole flood of light to burst in upon him at once, through the dense clouds of opposition and prejudice which hang all around. Old ideas have to be gotten rid of, by some people, before they can entertain the new; and this will especially be the case in the matter of the Sun, about which we are taught, by Mr. Proctor, as follows: “The globe of the Sun is so much larger than that of the Earth that no less than 1,250,000 globes as large as the Earth would be wanted to make up together a globe as large as the Sun.” Whereas, we know that, as it is demonstrated that the Sun moves round over the Earth, its size is proportionately less. We can then easily understand that Day and Night, and the Seasons are brought about by his daily circuits round in a course concentric with the North, diminishing in their extent to the end of June, and increasing until the end of December, the equatorial region being the area covered by the Sun’s mean motion. If, then, these pages serve but to arouse the spirit of enquiry, the author will be satisfied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the Earth In telling the story of this search for the mode by which the earth came into being, we have let the Inci dents that led the Inquiry on from one stage to another fall in with the steps of the inquiry itself. It is in keeping with the purposes of this series of booklets that the motives which set researches a-going should have their place with the quests that arose from them. At any rate, it is clear that the reader will be at some advantage in forming his own judgment of the value of what is offered for his acceptance, if the lines along which the inquiry was approached, the conditions that afi'ected the mental attitude Of the inquirer, and the considerations that weighed in reaching conclusions are laid as frankly before him as the conclusions them selves. The reader will of course choose his own pace, but it were well if it were deliberate. Pictures Of nebulae and nebulous pictures rise slowly into good definition. Besides, the interpretations we ofi'er are tentative; it were well to detain them a little for scrutiny as they pass under review. The final story of the birth of the earth will come only after a time when the vestiges of creation have been more keenly discerned and more faithfully rendered than is possible now. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Earth The science of our schools is, in a word, quantitative. That is, it concerns itself with exact measurements, accurate data, rigorous experiments, and demonstrations of laws which have to do with quantitative relationships. Hours are spent, for instance, in some of our high school laboratories, in the exact deter mination with a vernier caliper of the coefficient of expansion of aluminum. Such experiments are liable to be tedious, require much time, and thereby greatly limit the scope of the sciences taught. They are, moreover, entirely out of the reach of our elementary schools. Download or read book The Making of the Earth Classic Reprint written by J. W. Gregory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the Earth The origin of the earth deals with events of primeval antiquity and with conditions very different from those of the present time. Hence it is not surprising that we find the problem attended by many uncertainties, for we only know the earth after it has waxed old and we only look upon the earth's cold outer surface. Of one fact we can, however, be sure; the earth was originally part of a much larger and less compact mass, from which came all the other members of the Solar System. The earth is not unique in structure or material. Many of the heavenly bodies that we see in the sky at night are similar to the earth; for the spectroscope shows that some of them are composed of similar materials; some also of the fragments of shooting stars that fall upon the earth consist of the same minerals as the rocks of the earth's crust. Now as we advance my heart leaps at the sight of my birthplace. What a pretty location it is! Here is the cot of my father: In youth it sheltered me. It is the loved spot which my in fancy knew. How dear to my heart is this scene of my childhood. Happy childhood thus early blessed with blessings hereditary to all after hours! There is no place so suggestive and inter esting in our adult years as that in which we began life. It is one of those exquisite situations which paint their own picture insensibly in the memory while you look on them, natural, daguerreotypes, as it were. Considered only as a house, it left some things to be desired but it is never to be considered only as a house. Why is it that we thus love the place of our birth? Why have all men done the same? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of the Earth In calling this little reading book a romance it must not be supposed that facts are ignored. I have used all the facts I found available. Most of the statements are the accepted truths, many of them the commonplaces, of science. Where I could not obtain facts, I have permitted myself to speculate, to make deductions from the accepted laws of nature. When I have thus soared on the wings of the imagi nation I hope the flight has not been unscientific, nor the views presented unsound. When I have used those Wings I have kept well Within sight of the reader; he can see every movement that has led me to these conclusions. Sometimes where no path existed I have not dared to soar; I have merely roughed out tracks that I hope will be straightened and metalled and become paths of progress. Where two opposing schools have suggested opposite ways I have not hesitated to use the clue given me by codified science, and have followed fearlessly where the accepted laws of matter and energy have led me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Figure of the Earth: Historical The progress of the science of astronomy is the continued triumph of the powers of the intellect over the first erroneous conceptions of the senses; and its history is so allied to that of the human mind that we cannot help feeling a strong inclination to know at what time, and by what people, the hypotheses upon which the science is based were first advanced. The value of an hypothesis is estimated by the number of difficult phenomena it explains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Man and the Earth Classic Reprint written by Nathaniel Southgate Shaler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 252 pages. It would have been a matter of no great difficulty to have carried out my original plan and to have filled many pages with such matter. The truth is, however, that although the earth's stores of value to men can be estimated in general terms there is as yet no sufficient basis for accurate quantitative reckonings. Thus while we can clearly foresee that the store of coal is certain to be so far exhausted within two or three centuries that it will have no considerable place in the arts, we cannot estimate the amount of this fuel with anything like statistical accuracy. Thus it is that the statements in this book should be taken as the judgments of an observer who has endeavored to inform himself as to the resources of the earth of value to men, who is confident that in the general terms in which these opinions are stated they have value as guides to conduct. Download or read book The Age of the Earth Classic Reprint written by Arthur Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Age of the Earth It is perhaps a little to ask of our Mother Earth her age, but Science acknowledges no shame and from time to time has boldly attempted to wrest from her a secret which is proverbially well guarded. On January 30th, 1911, I placed before the Natural History Society of the Royal College of Science a brief account of some of these attempts, and out of that paper this little book has gradually developed. In the present survey of the subject - the measurement of geological time - I have endeavoured to give as full and complete an account of the chief methods of attack as space would allow. My particular object has been to draw attention to their respective limitations and to test the validity of the various assumptions on which they are based. So far, the most remarkable feature of the problem lies in the extraordinary discrepancy between the conclusions drawn from the two most prominent methods of dealing with it. I have sought to mitigate the severity of this disagreement by discussing the possibility and consequences of reconciliation and by suggesting a path along which reconciliation may be found.
