A portion of it was, at a subsequent period, reproduced in a lecture read before The Young Men's Christian Association, of Ottawa. The lecture appeared in one of the Ottawa papers at the time, and afterwards repeated enquiries were made for copies which could not be supplied. Book excerpt: Award-winning author Ben Bova brings us New Earth, his latest tale of science fiction in his Grand Tour series. The entire world is thrilled by the discovery of a new Earthlike planet. Advance imaging shows that the planet has oceans of liquid water and a breathable oxygen-rich atmosphere. Eager to gain more information, a human exploration team is soon dispatched to explore the planet, now nicknamed New Earth. All of the explorers understand that they are essentially on a one-way mission. The trip takes eighty years each way, so even if they are able to get back to Earth, nearly 200 years will have elapsed. They will have aged only a dozen years thanks to cryonic suspension, but their friends and family will be gone and the very society that they once knew will have changed beyond recognition. The explorers are going into exile, and they know it. They are on this mission not because they were the best available, but because they were expendable. Upon landing on the planet they discover something unexpected: New Earth is inhabited by a small group of intelligent creatures who look very much like human beings. Who are these people? Are they native to this world, or invaders from elsewhere? While they may seem inordinately friendly to the human explorers, what are their real motivations? What do they want? Moreover, the scientists begin to realize that this planet cannot possibly be natural. They face a startling and nearly unthinkable question: Could New Earth be an artifact? Book One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe

Download or read book One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe written by William Carpenter and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much may be gathered, indirectly, from the arguments in these pages, as to the real nature of the Earth on which we live and of the heavenly bodies which were created for us. The reader is requested to be patient in this matter and not expect a whole flood of light to burst in upon him at once, through the dense clouds of opposition and prejudice which hang all around. Old ideas have to be gotten rid of, by some people, before they can entertain the new; and this will especially be the case in the matter of the Sun, about which we are taught, by Mr. Proctor, as follows: “The globe of the Sun is so much larger than that of the Earth that no less than 1,250,000 globes as large as the Earth would be wanted to make up together a globe as large as the Sun.” Whereas, we know that, as it is demonstrated that the Sun moves round over the Earth, its size is proportionately less. We can then easily understand that Day and Night, and the Seasons are brought about by his daily circuits round in a course concentric with the North, diminishing in their extent to the end of June, and increasing until the end of December, the equatorial region being the area covered by the Sun’s mean motion. If, then, these pages serve but to arouse the spirit of enquiry, the author will be satisfied.

Book The Earth and Its Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Earth and Its Life Classic Reprint written by A. Waddingham Seers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth and Its Life No single man, if he spent his life in travel, could hope to gain more than an imperfect knowledge of a small portion of earth's surface. No man, whatever his gifts and industry, could hope to solve a millionth of the problems still unanswered concerning the earth and its life as we know it to-day. No one can say how old it is, yet we know that it is of an age so great that we cannot grasp it. We cannot conceive the slow processes that it passed through before it became a fit abode for life at all, nor the countless succeeding ages during which life was assuming its myriad forms. It took these vast stretches of time and these innumerable stages of development to make the earth and the life on it. The earth itself is the merest speck in the universe. It belongs to a system of which the star we call the sun is the centre; it depends upon the sun for its light and heat and life. The earth and other planets revolve round the sun, and the whole system, the solar system, as we call it, moves through space. The sun is one star. There are countless others. Some of these are centres of light and heat like the sun; others are travelling about in space, cold and dark. Download or read book The Story of the Earth Classic Reprint written by Carleton W. Washburne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Earth The science of our schools is, in a word, quantitative. That is, it concerns itself with exact measurements, accurate data, rigorous experiments, and demonstrations of laws which have to do with quantitative relationships. Hours are spent, for instance, in some of our high school laboratories, in the exact deter mination with a vernier caliper of the coefficient of expansion of aluminum. Such experiments are liable to be tedious, require much time, and thereby greatly limit the scope of the sciences taught. They are, moreover, entirely out of the reach of our elementary schools. These men were to go in companies of two each to assigned districts, and for six weeks or more carry the message of religious preparedness for the New Day that was to follow the war, to all' whom they could reach. By way of preparation for this labour of love, a series of interviews was graciously ac corded this group oi ministers by the Department heads in Washington, including the President himself. Fresh from these conferences the men returned to prepare their messages of reconstruction and recon secration. Book Man and the Earth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Man and the Earth Classic Reprint written by Nathaniel Southgate Shaler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man and the Earth These pages. They thus lack the apparent authority which such a presentation would have given them. It would have been a matter of no great difficulty to have carried out my original plan and to have filled many pages with such matter. The truth is, however, that although the earth's stores of value to men can be estimated in general terms there is as yet no sufficient basis for accurate quantitative reckonings. Thus while we can clearly foresee that the store of coal is certain to be so far exhausted within two or three centuries that it will have no considerable place in the arts, we cannot estimate the amount of this fuel with anything like statistical accuracy. Thus it is that the statements in this book should be taken as the judgments of an observer who has endeavored to inform himself as to the resources of the earth of value to men, who is confident that in the general terms in which these opinions are stated they have value as guides to conduct. Book A New Heaven and a New Earth

Download or read book A New Heaven and a New Earth written by Charles Brodie Patterson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Heaven and a New Earth: Or the Way to Life Eternal (Thought Studies of the Fourth Dimension) I believe it to be the legitimate birthright Of every man born into the world to be physically whole and mentally happy. My sole thought in writing this book is that it may bring more light to the minds of those who are seeking af ter a greater knowledge of the laws of life, and Whose earnest desire it is to apply such laws. I would ask of the reader, therefore, a careful, as well as a thoughtful study Of all the ques tions discussed, so that he may test the truth and prove for himself, that profit may accrue to his life as the result of the thought and study given to the contents of this book. I realize how imperfect is the setting for so great a subject as that upon which I have at tempted to write. I prophesy, however, that in the near future some great soul, enlightened by the indwelling spirit, will come forth and give in a larger and more complete way that which I, while seeing, am not fully able to express. Book excerpt: Earth is the latest science fiction novel from multiple Hugo Award winner Ben Bova, author of Apes and Angels and Survival A wave of lethal gamma radiation is expanding from the core of the Milky Way galaxy at the speed of light, killing everything in its path. The countdown to when the death wave will reach Earth and the rest of the solar system is at two thousand years. Humans were helped by the Predecessors, who provided shielding generators that can protect the solar system. In return, the Predecessors asked humankind's help to save other intelligent species that are in danger of being annihilated. But what of Earth? With the Death Wave no longer a threat to humanity, humans have spread out and colonized all the worlds of the solar system. The technology of the Predecessors has made Earth a paradise, at least on the surface. But a policy of exiling discontented young people to the outer planets and asteroid mines has led to a deep divide between the new worlds and the homeworld, and those tensions are about to explode into open war. Download or read book The Romance of the Earth Classic Reprint written by Alexander William Bickerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of the Earth In calling this little reading book a romance it must not be supposed that facts are ignored. I have used all the facts I found available. Most of the statements are the accepted truths, many of them the commonplaces, of science. Where I could not obtain facts, I have permitted myself to speculate, to make deductions from the accepted laws of nature. When I have thus soared on the wings of the imagi nation I hope the flight has not been unscientific, nor the views presented unsound. When I have used those Wings I have kept well Within sight of the reader; he can see every movement that has led me to these conclusions. Sometimes where no path existed I have not dared to soar; I have merely roughed out tracks that I hope will be straightened and metalled and become paths of progress. Where two opposing schools have suggested opposite ways I have not hesitated to use the clue given me by codified science, and have followed fearlessly where the accepted laws of matter and energy have led me.
