Book excerpt: Adam Steltzner is no ordinary engineer. His path to leadership was about as unlikely as they come. A child of beatnik parents, he barely made it through school. He blew off college in favour of work at a health food store and playing bass in a band, but after discovering an astonishing gift for maths and physics, he ended up helping a group of scientists land the heaviest rover in the history of space exploration on Mars. This is the story of the teamwork, drama and extraordinary feats of innovation at the Jet Propulsion Lab that culminated in that landing in 2012.
Download or read book Coupon Crazy written by Mary Potter Kenyon and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating history of this marketing tactic, and why some shoppers take it to extremes—from a longtime expert couponer. Coupon Crazy examines the phenomenon of avid coupon use and the socio-cultural and socioeconomic factors that construct it. By delving into the history of couponing, refunding, the science of shopping, and the dark underbelly of a coupon world the average American doesn’t even know about, Mary Potter Kenyon manages to both fascinate and educate. Readers will meet today’s “Coupon Queens” (and Kings) and learn about an era when trash really was cash. Not just an observer of this ethnographic research, Mary lived it for over thirty years. “My favorite aspect of the entire book was the candid tone Kenyon takes in sharing her story and others. As someone that both uses coupons and teaches couponing practices, I found the book triggering self-reflection at many points: Do I purchase products just because they are on sale? Do I devalue products I’ve gotten for free? Do I allow coupons to inform my purchases or the other way around? If you are a couponer, it’s quite possible you’ll find yourself reflecting on your own shopping habits as you read this book, too.” —Angela Russell, The Coupon Project

But Andrea swears she never intended to kill Rusty--and that it is Hemy who's "delusional" and obsessed. Download or read book North of Crazy written by Neltje and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a world of Gatsby-esque glamor, opulence, and cultural prestige, of exclusive parties and elegant dinners, of literary luminaries including Somerset Maugham, Daphne du Maurier, Irving Stone, and Theodore Roethke, of Manhattan townhouses and country estates. This is a world where children are raised by nannies, tutors, chauffeurs, gardeners, butlers, maids, and assorted staff, sent off to private schools—and largely ignored by their parents. Publishing magnate Nelson Doubleday’s daughter, Neltje, was raised to assume her place as a society matron. But beneath a seemingly idyllic childhood, darker currents ran: a colorful but alcoholic father whose absences left holes, a mother incapable of love, a family divided by money and power struggles, and a secret that drove the young woman into emotional isolation. North of Crazy is her story—written with the same fierce passion, wit, and emotion that drove her off the conventional path to reconstruct her life from base zero. She became an artist, cattle rancher, and entrepreneur.

Book excerpt: In 1965, a rock group named The Byrds reached back over 2,000 years and took verses from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. When they released their song, the world sang "To everything - turn, turn, turn; There is a season - turn, turn, turn." Now, fifty years later, my book lets you consider these Old Testament words and evaluate their truth in your life. You first consider the role of choice and chance and then examine the negative side of life including natural disasters, demons, teasers, seductresses, weights, kryptonite, parasites, lunacy, idiocy, and other adverse influences. Next, you examine the positive side including angels, updrafts, sunshine, spinach, holidays/vacations, values, flowers, infusions, charms, and other positive influences. At the book's end, you determine how you see life and make plans to grow your life using your gifts and blessings. There are more than two dozen essays in this book and you reveal your thinking as you answer each essay question. Download or read book Money Raising Masterclass written by Norman Meier and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-05-17 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a total of 46.8 million millionaires worldwide at the beginning of the year 2020, and they collectively own approximately $158.3 trillion. There are millions of millionaires in the world and the number is increasing with each year. The only question that you should ask yourself, is why you are not one of them yet? How did those people become millionaires or even billionaires? Did they have a great 9 to 5 job that paid them really well? Most definitely not! They are all business owners and own shares of their own public company. No one becomes a billionaire by simply earning a salary from a job each year. People become wealthy by owning a significant share position in a company that is listed in the stock market. But how did they start out? How do you become a multi millionaire? They all started with a business idea. Then they incorporated a corporation, issued shares for themselves and raised money from investors. Eventually, they took the company public in the stock market and it was valued a several hundred millions of dollar. I have raised $40 million in 2.5 years from 500 investors and his company was valued at over $300 million in the stock market. Actually, I raised over $400 million from private investors and $600 million from institutional investors in my career since 1995. But the goal of this book is to teach you the things that you need to know to raise the first one or two million dollars by yourself so that you can take your company public in the stock market and attract millions more afterwards. This book will teach you everything about this process and how I have done it.
Download or read book Sports Crazy written by Steven J. Overman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports Crazy: How Sports Are Sabotaging American Schools exposes the excesses of middle and high school sports and the detrimental effects our sports obsession has on American education. Institutions are increasingly emulating college and professional sports models and losing sight of a host of educational and health goals. Steven J. Overman describes how this agenda is driven largely by partisan fans and parents of athletes who exert an inordinate influence on school priorities, and he explains how and why school administrators shockingly and consistently capitulate to these demands. The author underscores the incongruity of public schools involved in an entertainment business and the effects this diversion has on academic integrity, learning, life experience, and overall educational outcomes. Overman examines out-of-control school sports within the context of a school’s educational mission and curriculum, with telling reference to impacts on physical education. He explores as well the outsized place of interscholastic sports beyond the classroom and scrutinizes the distorted relationship between intramural or recreational sports and elitist, varsity athletics. Overman’s chapter on tackle football explains many reasons why this sport should be eliminated from the school extracurriculum and replaced by flag or touch football. Overman presents a brief history of interscholastic sports, and he compares and contrasts the American experience of school-sponsored sport to the European model of community-based clubs. Which approach better serves students? Overman recommends reforms in the context of a radical proposal to phase out interscholastic sports in favor of an intramural or club model. This approach would alleviate such problems as elitism and gender bias and reign in hypercompetitiveness while freeing schools to educate students rather than provide public entertainment.
