Book So Called Dollars

Download or read book So Called Dollars written by Harold E. Hibler and published by Coin & Currency Institute. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When So-Called Dollars was published it was the first, and it is still the only book to deal comprehensively with its subject matter. The book begins with the legendary Erie Canal Completion issues of 1826 and proceeds to catalog 135 years of the Golden Age of American history, all the way up to 1961. Although there have been many propositions for reviving the book over the years, none were more than theoretical musings until two collectors, Tom Hoffman of Crystal Lake, IL and Jonathan Brecher of Cambridge, MA set the process in motion. They have been joined by two others, Dave Hayes and John Dean, to produce a remarkable new edition, of the sort that can only be the product of dedicated hobbyists who love their subject and see it as their obligation to share with others the knowledge gained from years of collecting. While the second edition holds true to the original in basic style and in substance, prices have skyrocketed and it offers much that is new. There are many more illustrations than in the first edition. In fact, virtually every type is now represented by a photograph. More historical information for the issues is presented in the text, which has been further expanded with additional listings of both previously unknown metal varieties and totally new items. The size of each item is now given in mm rather than in 16ths of an inch as in the 1963 edition. Each issue has been assigned a rarity rating of from R-1, indicating more than 5,000 known, to R-10, meaning unique. In addition, a loose-leaf price guide included in each book at no additional charge. The index has been expanded to include references to more subjects and places. Finally, there is a section of color plates. The Hibler & Kappen book remains the standard reference work on the subject with its HK numbers an instantly recognizable means of cataloging and identification.

Book excerpt: Volume #19 in Whitman's best-selling Bowers Series covers two of the earliest U.S. coin denominations: half cents and large cents. These classic copper coins were made from 1793 into the late 1850s. In this colorfully illustrated book, America's popular early coppers are given the famous Q. David Bowers treatment: insightful study, rich historical background, and detailed data analysis. Bowersthe "Dean of American Numismatics" and the most prolific numismatic author of all timetells you everything you need to know to be a smart collector: how to evaluate quality, determine value, understand the market, and make good buys. Along the way, he explains why, in all of American coinage, half cents and large cents possess a special charm. You'll learn how the history of the developing nation shaped the coins' designs and production, and the effects the War of 1812 and other national events on their coinage. Bowers provides a wealth of information on each issue: mintages, existing populations, grading standards, values, auction records, keys to collecting and more. Historical background sets the coins in the broader context of American life from the 1790s through the 1850s. Hundreds of full-color images, careful analysis, and Bowers' engaging style make this book a treat for anyone interested in our nation's early history.

Download or read book Catalogue of John W Haseltine s Type Table of U S Dollars Half Dollars and Quarter Dollars written by John W. Haseltine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of John W. Haseltine's Type Table of U. S. Dollars, Half Dollars and Quarter Dollars: Also, Many Other Rare and Fine Coins, Including United States and Foreign Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals, Jacksonian Tokens, Ancient Coins, Pattern Pieces, Fractional Currency, Confederate Bonds, War Envelopes, Autographs, Proof Sets In this catalogue, I offer for public competition my Type Table of the United States Dollars, Half Dollars and Quarter Dollars, correctly described as to variety and condition. In many of the varieties in the Type Table, I have met with but a single specimen, and in that case they are termed ex cessively rare. Particular attention has been directed to the varieties of the early dates, and it is perhaps unecessary to state that I have no doubt quite a number of varieties Will be found in the higher dates, such as the different mints and positions of figures in dates; to the latter I have not given close attention, as they are put in the die With a punch. Before deciding to sell my Type Table at auction, I had disposed of a number of the rare varieties. In order that the list may appear more uniform, I have added those in an addenda (as not being for sale) at the end of the catalogue, together With those that I hwe not owned, but Which I have seen in other collections. I ha ve purposely omitted pattern pieces from the list of the regular series in the Type Table, With the exception of the 1836 Dollar and the Morgan 1878 standard Dollar. At a future time, if I should'decide to issue a work upon this subject, each variety Will be given a name to more easily distinguish it, and plates be given of those pieces that have but slight differences, inorder that collectors could more readily determine them.
