Book The Early Records of the Town of Portsmouth

Download or read book The Early Records of the Town of Portsmouth written by Clarence Saunders Brigham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Records of the Town of Portsmouth: Edited in Accordance With a Resolution of the General Assembly This old book of records, in spite of its long period of useful ness, is yet fairly well preserved. Its evident lack of covers during a part of its existence has permitted perhaps two dozen pages at each end of the book to become frayed and torn, some almost to the inner edge. The present substantial binding was put on during the term of Richard Sherman as town clerk. Since that time the volume has been carefully kept, although the age and brittleness of the paper have rendered it liable to con stant danger. That a few of the leaves have become torn and lost, even since then, may be seen by comparing the present transcript with that made by John R. Bartlett in editing the [mode [sland Colonial Records. Mr. Bartlett, in transcribing a portion of the records from 1639 to 1646, evidently had access in 1856 to a somewhat less mutilated volume than the existing one. A careful comparison, however, will show that the tran script in the Colonial Records is not at all to be relied upon for accuracy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From pre-colonial times through World War II , the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has served as a stage for the dramatic evolution of American history. Dispossessed citizens from the Massachusetts Bay Colony came to Portsmouth in the spirit of religious and political tolerance, paving the way for the establishment of a large Quaker settlement in town. Revolutionary leaders such as George Washington, Lafayette, and Rochambeau visited the summer residences of wealthy Newport merchants in Portsmouth, including the home of Tory, Metcalf Bowler. During the Civil War, the Melville area of Portsmouth was the site of a hospital for wounded Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners, and was an active stop on the Underground Railroad. Prior to World War II , John F. Kennedy received his PT boat training in Portsmouth, and Raytheon has kept many employed in the defense industry ever since.

Download or read book Early New England written by David A. Weir and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of covenant was at the heart of early New England society. In this singular book David Weir explores the origins and development of covenant thought in America by analyzing the town and church documents written and signed by seventeenth-century New Englanders. Unmatched in the breadth of its scope, this study takes into account all of the surviving covenants in all of the New England colonies. Weir's comprehensive survey of seventeenth-century covenants leads to a more complex picture of early New England than what emerges from looking at only a few famous civil covenants like the Mayflower Compact. His work shows covenant theology being transformed into a covenantal vision for society but also reveals the stress and strains on church-state relationships that eventually led to more secularized colonial governments in eighteenth-century New England. He concludes that New England colonial society was much more "English" and much less "American" than has often been thought, and that the New England colonies substantially mirrored religious and social change in Old England.

Download or read book Our Beloved Kin written by Lisa Brooks and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling and original recovery of Native American resistance and adaptation to colonial America With rigorous original scholarship and creative narration, Lisa Brooks recovers a complex picture of war, captivity, and Native resistance during the “First Indian War” (later named King Philip’s War) by relaying the stories of Weetamoo, a female Wampanoag leader, and James Printer, a Nipmuc scholar, whose stories converge in the captivity of Mary Rowlandson. Through both a narrow focus on Weetamoo, Printer, and their network of relations, and a far broader scope that includes vast Indigenous geographies, Brooks leads us to a new understanding of the history of colonial New England and of American origins. Brooks’s pathbreaking scholarship is grounded not just in extensive archival research but also in the land and communities of Native New England, reading the actions of actors during the seventeenth century alongside an analysis of the landscape and interpretations informed by tribal history.
