Download or read book Early Daoist Dietary Practices written by Shawn Arthur and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much as the modern Western world is concerned with diets, health, and anti-aging remedies, many early medieval Chinese Daoists also actively sought to improve their health and increase their longevity through specialized ascetic dietary practices. Focusing on a fifth-century manual of herbal-based, immortality-oriented recipes—the Lingbao Wufuxu (The Preface to the Five Lingbao Talismans of Numinous Treasure)—Shawn Arthur investigates the diets, their ingredients, and their expected range of natural and supernatural benefits. Analyzing the ways that early Daoists systematically synthesized religion, Chinese medicine, and cosmological correlative logic, this study offers new understandings of important Daoist ideas regarding the body’s composition and mutability, health and disease, grain avoidance (bigu) diets, the parasitic Three Worms, interacting with the spirit realm, and immortality. This work also employs a range of cross-disciplinary scientific and medical research to analyze the healing properties of Daoist self-cultivation diets and to consider some natural explanations for better understanding Daoist asceticism and its underlying world view.

Download or read book Tell Me the Story written by Alan Coler and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan has been a pastor for more than 35 years. He is more than a preacher he is a wonderful story teller. He can make the stories of the Bible come alive by filling in the sights, sounds and smells that are happening all around the people. It is his goal to get people to read the Bible using the imagination God gave each of us as they read. He says, "There is so much to read in every Bible story and so much missed when we don't image everything going on behind the scenes. What did the people look like? How were they dressed? What was their tone of voice? Who was there? All of these are important to the story." The portrait of the cover is one of Alan's favorite Renaissance paintings, It was painted by Matthias Strom of Stromer (1600-1652). He was a Dutch or perhaps a Flemish painter who lived for a time in Italy. For Alan, it is where Tell Me the Story- A Christmas Imaging begins. Enjoy Brent is a recent graduate from Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. When creating the illustrations for this story, Brent's goal was to use his artwork as a simple guide to let the reader's imagination interpret and create the story. The use of simple lines with dynamic shading is a technique Brent developed in his early years, and it is still apparent in his artwork today. Brent currently does freelance work as an illustrator and graphic artist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical introduction to word history investigates every aspect of where words come from and how they change. Philip Durkin, chief etymologist of the Oxford English Dictionary, shows how different types of evidence can shed light on the myriad ways in which words change in form and meaning. He considers how such changes can be part of wider linguistic processes, or be influenced by a complex mixture of social and cultural factors. He illustrates every point with a wide range of fascinating examples. Dr Durkin investigates folk etymology and other changes which words undergo in everyday use. He shows how language families are established, how words in different languages can have a common ancester, and the ways in which the latter can be distinguished from words introduced through language contact. He examines the etymologies of the names of people and places. His focus is on English but he draws many examples from languages such as French, German, and Latin which cast light on the pre-histories of English words. The Oxford Guide to Etymology is reliable, readable, instructive, and enjoyable. Everyone interested in the history of words will value this account of an endlessly fascinating subject.

Download or read book Wolf Country written by John Theberge and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolves arouse a passion in people. Some are fascinated by them; others hate them. Time and again, John and Mary Theberge have been confronted by angry hunters and farmers who repeat the same refrain, “What good is a wolf anyway?” In Wolf Country, John Theberge provides a gentle answer to that harsh question by describing the lives of the Algonquin wolves that he and Mary came to know during their eleven years of tracking them. In telling their stories, he also tells something about the questions he set out to answer: whether wolf packs aggressively defend their territories; whether wolves kill more of their prey than the prey population can sustain; and whether pack behavior supports the idea of the survival of the best-fit group. This is a fascinating and inspiring story told by a man for whom the appreciation of science and life are inseparable.
Download or read book The Gazebo written by Alexander Lebenstein and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: November 10, 1938. Germany. Kristallnacht. Night of Broken Glass. Eleven year old Alex Lebenstein comes face to face with the Nazi regime that is determined to exterminate all Jews from the face of Europe. After witnessing the beating of his family, they escape to be hidden for a few days before being forced into the newly created Jewish Ghetto where he will spend the next three years. A six day cattle car ride during one of the coldest winters on record to the larger Jewish Ghetto in Riga, Latvia is merely the first destination of what will become a three year battle of survival. From the concentration camps Kaiserwald and Stutthof, and slave labor camps Hasenpot and Burggraben to liberation and escape, teenaged Alex Lebenstein lived the sights, sounds, and smells of death. Despite facing execution, and living under the shadows of the crematoria chimneys that darkened the skies with black smoke, this is a tale of hope and wonder. It has been some sixty plus years since I have thought about a number of the events that I witnessed or survived during the time that I was a teenager. I must refer to myself as a teenager, and cant say child, because I largely did not have a childhood after the evening of Kristallnacht. This dark period of my life was so traumatic that it is only recently that I have been able to confront the shadows and noises that still cause me to start whenever I see or hear them. Of all the sights and sounds that left a lasting impression on me during the years that I fought to survive, there is no doubt that the sounds I experienced while we huddled on the gazebo are the ones that will forever haunt me. Even now, I cannot hear the sound of leaves scraping on the sidewalk or the bricks of my apartment without flashing back to the time that we huddled on that old gazebo and that eerie sound of dead leaves and vines added to the sheer terror that I was feeling. More than a story of survival, this is a tale of good triumphing over evil, and one mans battle to make a difference in the lives of children. With a new lease on life, he now promotes tolerance through education on two continents, and tells his remarkable story so that the children will know.
