This book summarizes a landmark longitudinal study of 200 children, from the ages of 3 to 23. The Munich Longitudinal Study on the Ontogenesis of Individual Competencies (LOGIC) examined the development of individual differences over time and whether it is possible to predict later competencies from earlier ones. Offering a snapshot of theory and data on personality, social, motor, moral, and cognitive development, the contributors help us understand which individual differences can and cannot be altered through schooling and other experiences and how differences seen in the earliest stages are later reflected in adulthood. The results provide valuable insight into the strengths and limitations of early prediction of individual differences. This is the second volume to review the wealth of data generated by the study. The first volume (Weinert and Schneider, 1999) traced development from ages 3 to 12. This volume continues the story, integrating these early findings with the results from adolescence and young adulthood. Each of the chapters provides an overview of current research and addresses how the data help us understand the presence and developmental effects of individual differences. Among the findings are results on: The relative stability of cognitive competencies The long term effects of shyness and aggression The relation between moral understanding and action, and The role of education in the development or maintenance of performance differences. Book excerpt: A Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Growth reports the findings of a longitudinal study of the growth of 200 schoolboys and 100 schoolgirls through the course of adolescence. As well as height and weight, about a dozen other physical measures were studied or related to each other and to the staging of sexual characteristics. These values are analysed according to both the chronological age and age based on a common pubertal characteristic of peak height velocity. The range of magnitude and timing of pubertal events is described and compared for boys and girls. These recent data are compared with previous European and North American longitudinal studies, notably those of Tanner conducted over 20 years ago. In addition new information is provided which contrasts growth of two large cohorts of boys in different geographical and social settings, and compares the growth patterns of thin and exogenously obese subjects and of early and later maturers.

Success in Early Intervention focuses on the Child-Parent Center (CPC) program in Chicago, the second oldest (after Head Start) federally funded early childhood intervention program. Begun in 1967, the program currently operates out of twenty-four centers, which are located in proximity to the elementary schools they serve. The CPC program's unique features include mandatory parental involvement and a single, sustained educational system that spans preschool through the third grade. Central to this study is a 1986 cohort of nearly twelve hundred CPC children and a comparison group of low income children whose subsequent activities, challenges, and achievements are followed through the age of fifteen. The lives of these children amply demonstrate the positive long-term educational and social consequences of the CPC program. Arthur J.
