Book excerpt: She's been called headstrong. She's been called opinionated. Hell, she's been called everything in the book, and now, in this fourth mystery in the acclaimed series, the outlaw Jesse James rides again. It's springtime in upstate New York, where the lilacs are in bloom and love is all around—even for Jessica James, full-time investigative reporter and part-time fool. Well, why shouldn't she be? Everyone else is in love: her mother, still honeymooning with the mischievous Charlie Browne; and her sometime lover, mobster Marcus Andrelli, who seems to have forgotten Jesse and taken up with another woman. For Jesse, though, love is literally in the air, with a handsome pilot named Mac Devlin. The mystery starts simply, and in Jesse's never-dull world, that's a feat. A mysterious man is shadowing Mac, and the reporter instinct in Jesse takes over. What does this stranger want, and how does it involve her mother's elusive new husband, who disappears as quickly as he appears, always with Jesse's mom in tow? Mac and Jesse team up—reluctantly at first—to find the vanished newlyweds. Together, they are drawn into a perilous and deadly game of blackmail and secrets from the past, where the high-flying stakes mean life or death.

Book Oh No We re Gonna Die Too

Download or read book Oh No We re Gonna Die Too written by Bob Bell and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oh No! We’re Gonna Die Too came about due to the popularity of Bob’s first book Oh No! We’re Gonna Die. That book was mostly about the author’s misadventures in Alaska. Many of his friends and associates approached him after reading the book and told him their stories which were very similar to his. He collected those stories and with a few details filled in and some observations by Bob, compiled them into the second book. This book is also written in a humorous fashion, but again conveys the apprehension, excitement and relief involved in life threatening adventures. This book shows how a relatively small mistake can quickly put one’s life at risk in the Alaska wilderness. It also takes the reader on adventures throughout Alaska with a whole new cast of characters who continue the tradition of questionable judgment and bad luck. You will experience airplane crashes, wild critters trying to eat folks, extreme weather, malfunctioning equipment, sinking boats and many other challenges. These stories give the reader a personal look at how many Alaskans live, recreate and somehow survive. It is doubtful many of them would have survived if it weren’t for pure luck. As one can see from these stories, there is not a lot of clear thinking or intelligence involved in most of the stories, but there is an ample amount of excitement. Please enjoy your trip with us through our Alaska misadventures

Book excerpt: Ace Roberts was, in his own words, "The Best Damn Fighter Pilot Ever Born!" This Clark-Gable look-alike got his nickname by shooting down ten Jap Zeros in a P-40 Tomahawk in 1942 as an American mercenary for Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek. He reinforced this reputation in the Korean War by shooting down ten Russian-built MiG- 15's in his F-86 Sabrejet. He was, in fact, a double ace, two times over. Ace was also very, very lucky! He survived three years of inhuman torture in Japanese prisoner-of-war camps in World War II; being shot down behind enemy lines in Korea and a year of aerial combat in "MiG-Alley," high above the Manchurian skies. Women were irresistibly attracted by his devilish good looks and magnetic charm. These included Suzy, a pretty MASH nurse; An Liu, exotic confidant to Madame Chiang Kai Slick; and, if truth be known, Madame Chiang herself! But Ace had a penchant for taking chances. He chased two Chinese pilots across the Yalu River into Manchuria, shooting them down in violation of Air Force Regulations and getting cashiered from the service for this infraction. A year later, he vanished while flying an X-99 experimental jet over California's High Sierras, resulting in Madame Chiang's dispatching An Liu to assist in the search for her favorite American. Read LUCKYACE to find out if this intrepid airman can escape his latest rendezvous with death.

Book excerpt: The award-winning author of Clash of Eagles and Eagle in Exile concludes his masterly alternate-history saga of the Roman invasion of North America in this stunning novel. Roman Praetor Gaius Marcellinus came to North America as a conqueror, but after meeting with defeat at the hands of the city-state of Cahokia, he has had to forge a new destiny in this strange land. In the decade since his arrival, he has managed to broker an unstable peace between the invading Romans and a loose affiliation of Native American tribes known as the League. But invaders from the west will shatter that peace and plunge the continent into war: The Mongol Horde has arrived and they are taking no prisoners. As the Mongol cavalry advances across the Great Plains leaving destruction in its path, Marcellinus and his Cahokian friends must summon allies both great and small in preparation for a final showdown. Alliances will shift, foes will rise, and friends will fall as Alan Smale brings us ever closer to the dramatic final battle for the future of the North American continent. Book excerpt: Spring is nature’s season of rebirth and rejuvenation. Earth’s northern hemisphere tilts towards the sun, winter yields to intensifying light and warmth, and a wild, elemental beauty transforms the Highland landscape and a repertoire of islands from Colonsay to Lindisfarne. Jim Crumley chronicles the wonder, tumult and spectacle of that transformation, but he shows too that it is no Wordsworthian idyll that unfolds. Climate chaos brings unwanted drama to the lives of badger and fox, seal and seabird and raptor, pine marten and sand martin. Jim lays bare the impact of global warming and urges us all towards a more daring conservation vision that embraces everything from the mountain treeline to a second spring for the wolf.
