Download or read book Thank You Lucky Stars written by Beverly Donofrio and published by Schwartz & Wade. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s the first day of fifth grade, and Ally is psyched. She and her best friend, Betsy, are in the same class, and have already planned on singing in the annual talent show together. But it’s not long before she sees that Betsy has made a new best friend, and Ally is no longer on her radar screen. Not to mention that the weird new kid, Tina, has glommed on to Ally. In this phenomenally accurate and readable portrayal of the trials and tribulations of fifth grade, readers will watch a quirky, sensitive, and extraordinarily likeable girl try to survive. Narrated in Ally’s distinctive first person voice, Thank You, Lucky Stars beautifully illustrates that it is possible to be unpopular, individualistic, nice, and still have fun.
Download or read book Thank Your Lucky Stars The 60 s Pop Show Featuring The Kinks The Beatles And The Rolling Stones written by Kevin Mulrennan and published by Kevin Mulrennan. This book was released on with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised and expanded, this history of the influential 1960's pop show contains a wealth of facts, information and trivia on ABC's Lucky Stars, a weekly pop show that ran from 1961 to 1966. The Beatles, the Kinks and the Rolling Stones were among the many hundreds of artists that travelled up the M1 to the Alpha studios in Birmingham to appear on the show. Chapters in the book deal with the history of the show, an analysis of the surviving episodes, a detailed look at a rare surviving script, a discussion of the crew, books and records, the artists who appeared from 1961 to 1966 and the songs they performed and the Australian version of the show. Fully illustrated throughout, there are many references to how the show was reported in the U.K. press. Original host and television and radio legend Pete Murray has very kindly written the foreword: Pete says: "Thank Your Lucky Stars was a pleasant and easy programme to work on. We were given plenty of freedom to play whichever songs we wanted. The big difference between Thank Your Lucky Stars and Top of the Pops – Lucky Stars was not driven by the charts - we had the complete freedom to play whatever we wanted. I remember meeting The Springfields on the show, and I really enjoyed working with them – what a lovely group of people, really friendly! Thank Your Lucky Stars was a great sixties tv show that has been sadly neglected in the archives in recent years. I am delighted that Kevin Mulrennan has brought out this long overdue book. I’d like to say that not just on behalf of myself, but also on behalf all the others who worked on that lovely show. Pete Murray, Thank Your Lucky Stars presenter, and original host of Top of the Pops. Thank Your Lucky Stars was unique in that it straddled the pre and post Beatles era of British pop music. There are brief biographies of all the artists appearing on the show, as well as the guest Disc Jockeys. In addition to the main hosts (Pete Murray, Keith Fordyce, Brian Matthew and Jim Dale) I have discovered that John Benson, Martin Locke, Simon Dee and Don Moss introduced the show too. Fans and performers alike recall their memories of this super show.. Hopefully this book will raise the profile of this forgotten gem of 1960's British television and you'll be thanking your lucky stars you bought it.

Download or read book The Latter Days written by Judith Freeman and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At twenty-two, Judith Freeman—born and raised in a Mormon community—had abandoned her faith, but found herself working in the church-owned department store in the Utah town where she grew up. She was in the process of divorcing the man she’d married at age seventeen and was living in her parents’ house with her four-year-old son, who had already endured two heart surgeries. The surgeon, a rising star in his field, had become her lover. It was at this fraught moment that she decided to become a writer. In this moving memoir, Freeman explores the circumstances and choices that informed her course, and those that allowed her to find a way forward. In shimmering prose, she gives us an illuminating, singular portrait of resilience and forgiveness, of memory and hindsight, and of the ways in which we come to identify our truest selves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bellefleur has a droll, distinct voice, and her one-liners zing off the page, striking both the heart and funny bone... There's a sparkling quality here, one that mirrors the starry title. Bellefleur writes as if she's captured fairy lights in a mason jar, twinkly and lovely within something solid yet fragile." – Entertainment Weekly Following Written in the Stars and Hang the Moon, Lambda Literary Award winner and national bestselling author Alexandria Bellefleur pens another steamy queer rom-com about former best friends who might be each other's second chance at love… Margot Cooper doesn’t do relationships. She tried and it blew up in her face, so she’ll stick with casual hookups, thank you very much. But now her entire crew has found "the one" and she’s beginning to feel like a fifth wheel. And then fate (the heartless bitch) intervenes. While touring a wedding venue with her engaged friends, Margot comes face-to-face with Olivia Grant—her childhood friend, her first love, her first… well, everything. It’s been ten years, but the moment they lock eyes, Margot’s cold, dead heart thumps in her chest. Olivia must be hallucinating. In the decade since she last saw Margot, her life hasn’t gone exactly as planned. At almost thirty, she’s been married... and divorced. However, a wedding planner job in Seattle means a fresh start and a chance to follow her dreams. Never in a million years did she expect her important new client’s Best Woman would be the one that got away. When a series of unfortunate events leaves Olivia without a place to stay, Margot offers up her spare room because she’s a Very Good Person. Obviously. It has nothing to do with the fact that Olivia is as beautiful as ever and the sparks between them still make Margot tingle. As they spend time in close quarters, Margot starts to question her no-strings stance. Olivia is everything she’s ever wanted, but Margot let her in once and it ended in disaster. Will history repeat itself or should she count her lucky stars that she gets a second chance with her first love?

Download or read book The Apparatus written by Don LoCicero and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-09-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apparatus is an insightful satire on government bureaucracy, personal identity and confused human relationships. Set in World War II America, the novel transcends geographical borders and is timeless. The characters in The Apparatus remain nameless, defined by their functions rather than their individuality. LoCicero's narrator, a young man with an extraordinary ability, recounts his bewildering dealings with the Apparatus, a nebulous organization that is simultaneously frightening and laughable, omnipotent and powerless, omnipresent and invisible, omniscient and unknowing. Its world is a chaotic conglomeration of committees and cubicles, its function unintelligible even to those who are in its most powerful positions. Directing the important Apparatus School, for example, is the "Head Administrator", a sadistic, femme-fatal whose sexual services are enjoyed by the leaders of many governments. What role does the Apparatus play in our lives? One must read LoCicero's work to learn the answer, if indeed, there is an answer.

Book excerpt: This book argues that the mythic figure of the zombie, so prevalent and powerful in contemporary culture, provides the opportunity to explore certain social models – such as ‘childhood’ and ‘school’, ‘class’ and ‘family’ – that so deeply underpin educational policy and practice as to be rendered invisible. It brings together authors from a range of disciplines to use contemporary zombie typologies – slave, undead, contagion – to examine the responsiveness of everyday practices of schooling such as literacy, curriculum and pedagogy to the new contexts in which children and young people develop their identities, attitudes to learning, and engage with the many publics that make up their everyday worlds.
