Book Modeling and Computing for Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Modeling and Computing for Geotechnical Engineering written by M.S. Rahman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling and computing is becoming an essential part of the analysis and design of an engineered system. This is also true of "geotechnical systems", such as soil foundations, earth dams and other soil-structure systems. The general goal of modeling and computing is to predict and understand the behaviour of the system subjected to a variety of possible conditions/scenarios (with respect to both external stimuli and system parameters), which provides the basis for a rational design of the system. The essence of this is to predict the response of the system to a set of external forces. The modelling and computing essentially involve the following three phases: (a) Idealization of the actual physical problem, (b) Formulation of a mathematical model represented by a set of equations governing the response of the system, and (c) Solution of the governing equations (often requiring numerical methods) and graphical representation of the numerical results. This book will introduce these phases. MATLAB® codes and MAPLE® worksheets are available for those who have bought the book. Please contact the author at [email protected] or [email protected]. Download or read book Icons of Space written by Jelena Bogdanović and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Icons of Space: Advances in Hierotopy brings together important scholars of Byzantine religion, art, and architecture, to honour the work of renowned art historian Alexei Lidov. As well as his numerous publications, Lidov is well known for developing the concept of hierotopy, an innovative approach for studying the creation of sacred spaces. Hierotopy and the related concepts of ‘spatial icons’ and ‘image-paradigms’ emphasize fundamental questions about icons, including what defines them as structures, spaces, and experiences. Chapters in this volume engage with the overarching theme of icons of space by employing, contrasting, and complementing methods of hierotopy with more traditional approaches such as iconography. Examinations of icons have traditionally been positioned within strictly historical, theological, socio-economic, political, and art history domains, but this volume poses epistemological questions about the creation of sacred spaces that are instead inclusive of multi-layered iconic ideas and the lived experiences of the creators and beholders of such spaces. This book contributes to image theory and theories of architecture and sacred space. Simultaneously, it moves beyond colonial studies that predominantly focus on questions of religion and politics as expressions of privileged knowledge and power. This book will appeal to scholars and students of Byzantine history, as well as those interested in hierotopy and art history.

Book Photography and Modern Icons

Download or read book Photography and Modern Icons written by Federica Muzzarelli and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes how six protagonists of culture, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, built their media image by exploiting the innovations brought about by the invention of photography. By exalting the cult of personality, eccentric narcissism and the nascent mass communication, they made the photographic portrait the tool through which they could become celebrities and, at the same time, found fashion and clothing styles that are still of reference today. From De Mérode’s stereotype of beauty to Baudelaire’s total black dandyism, and from Schwarzenbach’s lesbian-chic style to Nijinsky’s eroticizing exoticism, the book provides detailed insights into the life and work of various protagonists, always keeping in the background the cultural and artistic context of European Modernism. It will particularly appeal to scholars and students of contemporary art, the history of photography, fashion studies and mass communications.

Book Milton Friedman

Download or read book Milton Friedman written by James Forder and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-05 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the work of Milton Friedman, which is amongst the most significant in modern economics and, equally, amongst the most contentious. Although Friedman became most famous for his views on money and monetary policy as well as his public writings, a large and important part of his work concerned other aspects of economics. All parts of Friedman’s work are considered here, as is his account of his own life. By focussing on what Friedman wrote rather than what later authors have written about him, this volume seeks to analyse the character, qualities and development of the arguments he made. This text is important for anyone interested in this both celebrated and reviled figure in economics. James Forder clarifies messages in Friedman’s writing that have otherwise so often been obscured by academic and public controversy.

The answers to some of these questions are straightforward, the answers to others much less so. All of them are explored in the fascinating Icons of Invention: The Makers of the Modern World from Gutenberg to Gates. This in-depth resource tells the stories of 24 of the most influential and well-known inventions of the modern age—and of the individuals most responsible for their development. At the same time, the set profiles their competitors and details the sometimes-controversial, often-mistake-plagued routes almost all of them took to their most famous creations.
