Book excerpt: Sergeant Paul Szych has been in law enforcement for 20 years, assigned to criminal investigations specializing in high-lethality domestic violence (DV) and stalking cases since 2005. With a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Sgt. Szych currently supervises the Albuquerque Police Department's (APD) DV/Stalking Unit. He has supervised countless high-lethality DV and stalking cases. His methods are cutting-edge, resulting in a production company beginning work on a new crime based docureality show featuring Sgt. Szych and his detectives as they "stalk the stalker." Sgt. Szych's developed best practice protocol has dramatically improved overall investigative performance and victim safety at both the local and state levels. He has expert experience with high profile celebrity stalking investigations and been the on-scene violent crimes supervisor for homicide, robbery, stalking and DV major investigations. Under Sgt. Szych's command, his unit has gained national recognition. Sgt. Szych developed and implemented the Dynamic Stalking Intervention ® (DSI ®) model to provide clarity and specific protocol for high-lethality DV and stalking-related investigations. The International Association of Chiefs of Police recognized DSI ® as an encouraging new model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to information on this subject becoming available, Betsy Ramsey was learning to think like a stalker and developing methods of intervention. She has worked thousands of cases as a victim advocate and traveled across the US and Canada training law enforcement and other professionals on the subject. This guide is based on years of experience and from having been stalked. Targets of stalkers need to be educated quickly on the dynamics and the dos and don'ts of handling the crime. This guide provides information that can assist the target through the process. It starts with basics you should keep in mind and covers the dynamics of stalkers and obsession, the dynamics and common reactions of targets, documentation, intervention, laws, legal action, danger assessment and security. Cyber/electronic stalking is also addressed with information on equipment that may be used to stalk and recommendations for the targets to keep up with the data that is going out on the Internet by the stalker that may be inaccurate and can pose danger. Straightforward and easy-to-read, the handbook can be used as a reference and to educate family, friends and co-workers of the target. The sad truth is that stalking cases are often mishandled because those involved do not understand the dynamics of the crime. The guide can also be used for prevention, particularly by the parents of children. Young children are not referred to as stalkers, but they can be trained by an adult to be obsessive. Children as young as preschool have focused inappropriately on a classmate. The child's obsessive parent encourages the behavior and tries to take over the life of the targeted child and his/her parents. Stalking is a crime that impacts the lives of the targets and those around them. This criminal can escalate rapidly and quickly pose a danger. This handbook is a step-by-step guide for those who are being stalked or want to learn about this dangerous crime. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stop Him from Killing Them is a powerful true crime story of how a police commander stopped more than 1850 violent men from killing the women they were stalking. Commander Paul Szych takes you through his 30-year journey in law enforcement, to teach you how to proactively avoid domestic violence, stalking and workplace violence related killing events. This book is based on true events involving dangerous men who are willing to threaten, stalk, and murder the women they are pursuing. Sadly, the workplace has become the new "Ground Zero" for mass-killing-events, many of which have a domestic violence and/or stalking related nexus that has "spillover," into the workplace environment. While active shooter training is an important mitigative layer to workplace safety, it assumes that an active shooter incident is already in progress and lives are being lost. law enforcement will respond to such an event as fast as humanely possible, however, this response takes time. Time is the one thing that you do not have during an active shooter incident - if the goal is to have zero victim fatalities. The reality is that most active shooter incidents start and conclude prior to law enforcement making contact with the shooter, thus active shooter training is a "Stop-Gap" measure that seeks to only limit the loss of life, while doing nothing to proactively prevent the first shot from being fired. Therefore, the "best practice" first step to workplace safety must be "Workplace Violence Avoidance," as described within this book. The path to stopping the increasing threat of domestic violence, stalking, school, and workplace violence related homicide starts the moment you read this book!

Book The Stalking of Public Figures

Download or read book The Stalking of Public Figures written by JM. Hoffmann and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public figures are at relatively high risk of unusual contact initiated by fixated individuals. Prior research on managing the threat presented by public figure stalkers concludes that although direct threats rarely precede attacks, there is usually evidence of pre-planning. Furthermore, some public figure attackers do attempt to communicate with their future intended victim prior to attack. Thus, early warning signs from unusual contact behavior can be a powerful tool in threat assessment and risk management. The current paper offers a systematic concept for managing public figure stalking and constitutes five stages: (i) screening, (ii) first analysis, (iii) passive research, (iv) active research and finally (v) considered management strategy. It is concluded that assessment and management of risk are dynamic procedures, requiring ongoing monitoring and flexibility. Furthermore, although different stalkers will engage in ostensibly similar behavior, their motives and underlying psychopathologies may vary considerably. As such, all interventions require individual construction.

Download or read book Stalking written by Debra A. Pinals and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, stalking has received increasingly widespread attention. The establishment of anti-stalking legislation has helped to spur interest in stalking research and the forensic assessment of stalkers. Popular representations of stalking have made the public more aware of this phenomenon. It has long been the responsibility of mental health professionals to provide assessments of and treatment for stalkers and their victims, and as criminal cases involving defendants charged with stalking become more common, it is now also the responsibility of legal professionals to be knowledgeable about psychiatric aspects of stalking behavior and the risks that so often must be minimized through legal action or a combination of clinical and legal interventions. This volume provides a thorough overview of current scientific and clinical research about stalking, along with practical guidance and original commentary from the Psychiatry and the Law Committee of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, an organization recognized for its contributions to mental health literature. In addition to covering the most widely discussed scientific topics related to stalking, including classification of stalking behaviors, risk assessment and risk management of stalkers, and the stalking experience from the perspective of victims, this book examines celebrity and special target stalking, cyberstalking, forensic assessment, and juvenile and adolescent stalking. Stalking: Psychiatric Perspectives and Practical Approaches provides a novel and comprehensive contribution to a field in need of an up-to-date text, written from the vantage point of forensic psychiatrists who encounter stalkers and their victims in their distinct roles as treatment providers and forensic evaluators. The prism of stalking and the risks involved continue to fascinate and frighten. In pursuit of rounded coverage, the authors have incorporated findings from numerous studies and analyzed these findings from several theoretical perspectives. Every chapter has been written from the vantage point of a committee of nationally recognized forensic psychiatrists who offer their perspectives on this fascinating but complex topic. Mental health professionals, members of the judiciary, law enforcement professionals, media personnel, and the public will no doubt find this text to be an informative and useful resource.

Book Handbook of Research on Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Managerial and Leadership Psychology

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Managerial and Leadership Psychology written by Johnson, Rick D. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of leadership and managerial psychology exists as a sub-branch of psychology within the fields of industrial and organizational psychology. There still appears to be ongoing debate regarding the core pathology for gaining managerial expertise in professional roles relative to having suitable leadership skills and managerial knowledge beyond the direct daily work involved in organizations. Professional organizations inherently include varied levels of sensitive human interactions, which further necessitates their management professionals to have leadership styles that are adjustable contingent on a given situation. Relative to this edited book, managerial psychology is being utilized in a way that may subsequently seek to develop a series of scientific theory principles where the focus is to develop managerial axioms that advance contemporary existing knowledge surrounding professional management logic. The Handbook of Research on Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Managerial and Leadership Psychology provides value uncovered by a collaboration of generalists and specialists who bring professional managerial and leadership opinions to light through narratives and research inclusive of fundamental theory principles that can be applied in practice and academia. This edited reference is focused on the enhancement of management research through managerial psychology while highlighting topics including business process knowledge, management in diverse discipline situations and professions, corporate leadership responsibility, leadership of self and others, and leadership psychology in a variety of different fields of work. This book is ideally designed for leadership and management professionals, academicians, students, and researchers in the fields of knowledge management, administrative sciences and management, leadership development, education, and organization development sub-branches or specialty practices.

Book Stalking Threatening and Attacking Public Figures

Download or read book Stalking Threatening and Attacking Public Figures written by J. Reid Meloy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-12 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public figures require attention, whether from a constituency who votes them in or out of office, shareholders who decide their economic benefit to the corporation, or fans who judge their performances. However, on the periphery of this normal attention resides a very real risk; that of a much smaller group of individuals who lack the ability to discriminate between their own private fantasies and the figure's public behavior. They may be personally insulted by perceived betrayal, fanatically in love due to a perceived affectionate or sexual invitation, or simply preoccupied with the daily life of the public figure. Such individuals may fixate and do nothing more. Others communicate or approach in a disturbing way. A few will threaten. And on rare occasions, one will breach the public figure's security perimeter and attack. Stalking, Threatening, and Attacking Public Figures is a comprehensive survey of the current knowledge about stalking, violence risk, and threat management towards public figures. With contributions from forensic psychologists and psychiatrists, clinicians, researchers, attorneys, profilers, and current and former law enforcement professionals, this book is the first of its kind, international in scope, and rich in both depth and complexity. The book is divided into three sections which, in turn, focus upon defining, explaining, and risk managing this increasingly complex global reality. Chapters include detailed case studies, analyses of quantitative data, reflections from attachment theory and psychoanalytic thought, descriptions of law enforcement and protective organization activities, mental health and psychiatric categorizations and understandings, consideration of risk assessment models and variables, victim perspectives, and others.
