Book Dynamic Response of Highway Bridges Under a Moving Truck and Development of a Rational Serviceability Requirement

Download or read book Dynamic Response of Highway Bridges Under a Moving Truck and Development of a Rational Serviceability Requirement written by Shabnam Darjani and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the development and usage of high-strength materials, the design of more flexible bridges is unavoidable. It is assumed that limiting a bridge static deflection would control the excessive vibration caused by more flexible design. However, results of prior studies indicate that deflection limits do not necessarily address bridges vibrational issue. This dissertation addresses the parameters affecting bridge vibration and provides simple equations to compute bridge dynamic acceleration, velocity and displacement in both transient and steady state parts of the vibration. These equations can then be used to control bridges excessive vibration; and provide human comfort and structural performance. A comprehensive analytical study was performed to evaluate dynamic response of bridges under a moving truck load. The effect of bridge dynamic parameters and vehicle moving conditions are investigated, which includes bridge frequency, damping ratio, span length, girders distance, bracing, support conditions, truck speed, load sequence, axle's weight, and number of spans. Bridge and vehicle k-parameters, which represent the number of vibration cycles before the next excitation occurs, are developed to better explain the vibrational behavior of a bridge. The proposed equations include bridge frequency, static deflection for one axle load, and k-parameters. Finally, a case study is presented to highlight the application of the new approach.

Book Dynamics of Highway Bridges

Download or read book Dynamics of Highway Bridges written by Don Albert Linger and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the design of highway bridges, the static live load is multiplied by a factor to compensate for the dynamic effect of moving vehicles. This factor, commonly referred to as an impact factor, is intended to provide for the dynamic response of the bridge to moving loads and suddenly applied forces. Many investigators have published research which contradicts the current impact formula 1, 4, 17. Some investigators feel that the problem of impact deals not only with the increase in over-all static live load but that is an integral part of a dynamic load distribution problem 24. The current expanded highway program with the large number of bridge structures required emphasizes the need for investigating some of the dynamic behavior problems which have been generally ignored by highway engineers. These problems generally result from the inability of a designer to predict the dynamic response of a bridge structure. Many different investigations have been made of particular portions of the overall dynamic problem. The results of these varied investigations are inevitably followed by a number of unanswered questions. Ironically, many of the unanswered questions are those which are of immediate concern in the design of highway bridges, and this emphasizes the need for additional research on the problem of impact.

Book Vibration of solids and structures under moving loads

Download or read book Vibration of solids and structures under moving loads written by L. Frýba and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport engineering structures are subjected to loads that vary in both time and space. In general mechanics parlance such loads are called moving loads. It is the aim of the book to analyze the effects of this type of load on various elements, components, structures and media of engineering me chanics. In recent years all branches of transport have experienced great advances characterized by increasingly higher speeds and weights of vehicles. As a result, structures and media over or in which the vehicles move have been subjected to vibrations and dynamic stresses far larger than ever before. The author has studied vibrations of elastic and inelastic bodies and structures under the action of moving loads for many years. In the course of his career he has published a number of papers dealing with various aspects of the problem. On the strength of his studies he has arrived at the conclusion that the topic has so grown in scope and importance as to merit a comprehensive treatment. The book is the outcome of his attempt to do so in a single monograph.

Book Vehicle Bridge Coupled Vibration

Download or read book Vehicle Bridge Coupled Vibration written by Qingfei Gao and published by Eliva Press. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a vehicle is driving on a highway bridge, it causes the bridge to vibrate, thereby affecting the vibration of the vehicle. This interaction and influence represent the coupled vibration between the vehicle and the bridge. From the perspective of dynamics, a car is a multi-degree-of-freedom vibration system composed of a car body, wheels and suspension system. Due to the weight of the vehicle and the unevenness of the bridge deck, the moving vehicle has a dynamic impact on the bridge structure, forcing the bridge to vibrate, which in turn affects the vibration of the vehicle. In this way, the vehicle and the bridge influence each other through the contact between the wheels and the bridge deck, thereby forming a complex multi-degree-of-freedom coupled vibration system. Dynamic performance of different bridges subjected to moving vehicles are conducted in this book, including of simply-supported girder bridges, continuous girder bridges, steel-concrete girder bridges, rigid bridges, concrete-filled steel tube arch bridges, large-span cable-stayed bridges, large-span suspension bridge. Also, dynamic load allowances corresponding to different responses in different positions of highway bridges under moving vehicular loads are deeply discussed. In addition, some key points on design, construction, reparation, and maintenance of highway bridges are detailedly discussed. This book can be used as a teaching book for civil engineering majors and transportation engineering majors, and can also be used as a reference for technical personnel of related majors.
