Book The Great Neighborhood Book

Download or read book The Great Neighborhood Book written by Jay Walljasper and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abandoned lots and litter-strewn pathways, or rows of green beans and pockets of wildflowers? Graffiti-marked walls and desolate bus stops, or shady refuges and comfortable seating? What transforms a dingy, inhospitable area into a dynamic gathering place? How do individuals take back their neighborhood? Neighborhoods decline when the people who live there lose their connection and no longer feel part of their community. Recapturing that sense of belonging and pride of place can be as simple as planting a civic garden or placing some benches in a park. The Great Neighborhood Book explains how most struggling communities can be revived, not by vast infusions of cash, not by government, but by the people who live there. The author addresses such challenges as traffic control, crime, comfort and safety, and developing economic vitality. Using a technique called "placemaking"-- the process of transforming public space -- this exciting guide offers inspiring real-life examples that show the magic that happens when individuals take small steps, and motivate others to make change. This book will motivate not only neighborhood activists and concerned citizens but also urban planners, developers and policy-makers.

Book Network and Discrete Location

Download or read book Network and Discrete Location written by Mark S. Daskin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-21 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the First Edition This book is refreshing to read since it takes an important topic... and presents it in a clear and concise manner by using examples that include visual presentations of the problem, solution methods, and results along with an explanation of the mathematical and procedural steps required to model the problem and work through to a solution.” —Journal of Classification Thoroughly updated and revised, Network and Discrete Location: Models, Algorithms, and Applications, Second Edition remains the go-to guide on facility location modeling. The book offers a unique introduction to methodological tools for solving location models and provides insight into when each approach is useful and what information can be obtained. The Second Edition focuses on real-world extensions of the basic models used in locating facilities, including production and distribution systems, location-inventory models, and defender-interdictor problems. A unique taxonomy of location problems and models is also presented. Featuring examples using the author’s own software—SITATION, MOD-DIST, and MENU-OKF—as well as Microsoft Office® Excel®, the book provides: • A theoretical and applied perspective on location models and algorithms • An intuitive presentation of the uses and limits of modeling techniques • An introduction to integrated location-inventory modeling and defender-interdictor models for the design of reliable facility location systems • A full range of exercises to equip readers with an understanding of the basic facility location model types Network and Discrete Location: Models, Algorithms, and Applications, Second Edition is an essential resource for practitioners in applied and discrete mathematics, operations research, industrial engineering, and quantitative geography. The book is also a useful textbook for upper-level undergraduate, graduate, and MBA courses.

Book Building a Framework for a Spatial Decision Support System for Co locating Public Facilities

Download or read book Building a Framework for a Spatial Decision Support System for Co locating Public Facilities written by Julie M. Minde and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-location involves the intentional siting together of public facilities. Co-location of public facilities is becoming an increasingly common practice, particularly for its perceived benefits of resource savings, increased efficiency and synergy of services, and enhanced sense of community. Such advantages may be especially critical in a location undergoing rapid growth. The ability to plan and manage the process of co-locating public facilities can be very important to the successful, efficient growth of a community. However, there can be significant challenges. Deliberate planning can be problematic in an environment of rapid growth. Co-location may instead be left to opportunity, which does little to maximize overall resource savings or to establish a coherent, long-term policy of co-location. Modeling can also be problematic in a rapidly changing environment. In general, modeling has proven to be limited in terms of serving as a predictive siting tool for public facilities under real-world conditions. There are no one-size-fits-all models for siting facilities, let alone for co-locating them, which is a far more complex endeavor. Thus, a more sustainable approach might be to develop a decision support tool. This research develops a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) to co-locate public facilities in Loudoun County, a rapidly growing county in northern Virginia. The goal of the project is to determine if employing a SDSS based on CommunityViz in ArcGIS 9.2 facilitates successful co-location of public facilities in a dynamic decision-making environment.

Book Dynamics of Industrial Revolution 4 0 Digital Technology Transformation and Cultural Evolution

Download or read book Dynamics of Industrial Revolution 4 0 Digital Technology Transformation and Cultural Evolution written by Ratri Wulandari and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 7th Bandung Creative Movement conference presented the theme "Dynamics of Industrial Revolution 4.0" which discussed how the digital world and connectivity changed human culture in various aspects of life, and transformed in accordance to human needs and social culture. Digital technology has transformed society to serve people from manufacturing needs to smart cities, from network connectivity to people connectivity. The application of information technology has helped in improving live quality and environmental sustainability. Digital transformation is revolutionizing how businesses and workers interconnect to be more productive and efficient. The result is improved collaboration, faster processes and time-to-market, lower costs and better products. Devices are getting smarter, meaning they are able to perform more and more tasks without human intervention; moreover, these devices generate data that provide insights to further improve processes and gain greater efficiencies. Moreover, with the Internet of Things (IoT), all these smart devices are interconnected in ways that not only help make them even smarter, but also enhances the intelligence of the overall system. Digital technology is a formidable driver for the transformation of a highly carbon-dependent world into one that is more ecologically ‘smart.’ We are entering a new era of environmental innovation that is driving better alignment between technology and environmental goals. Since its first announcement in 2011, industrial revolution 4.0 has dynamically changed and transformed to adjust itself to the human needs and to serve more efficiency and effectiveness of everyday life as well as environmental enhancement. The 7th Bandung Creative Movement has brought forward discussions on dynamic changes, ups and downs, innovations, relations of industrial revolution of the internet of thing, data, automation, to human physical world, new art and aesthetic, business, product innovation, built environment, and education.

Book Locating Public Facilities

Download or read book Locating Public Facilities written by Gabriel Loumeau and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the problem of the optimal location of public facilities. I develop a quantifiable model in which the central planner decides on a location strategy, which includes the geographical location and the capacity of public facilities, while anticipating how individuals and firms will react. The central planner's objective is to maximize aggregate welfare. I calibrate the model to fit the economic and geographic characteristics of the Paris metropolitan area at a 1km x 1km geographic resolution and focus on secondary schools as an example of public facilities. The counterfactual analysis, which compares the optimal and observed location strategy between 2001 and 2015, suggests that adopting the optimal strategy in any year would have increased welfare growth by about 12%. Half of the effect is attributable to improvements in channels other than shorter commutes to the public facility, mostly via lower housing prices and shorter commutes to the workplace. The analysis also reveals that the observed location strategy disproportionately favored short commutes in central locations and led to a mis-allocation of residential and commercial activities between the center and the periphery.
