Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On becoming familiar with difference equations and their close re lation to differential equations, I was in hopes that the theory of difference equations could be brought completely abreast with that for ordinary differential equations. [HUGH L. TURRITTIN, My Mathematical Expectations, Springer Lecture Notes 312 (page 10), 1973] A major task of mathematics today is to harmonize the continuous and the discrete, to include them in one comprehensive mathematics, and to eliminate obscurity from both. [E. T. BELL, Men of Mathematics, Simon and Schuster, New York (page 13/14), 1937] The theory of time scales, which has recently received a lot of attention, was introduced by Stefan Hilger in his PhD thesis [159] in 1988 (supervised by Bernd Aulbach) in order to unify continuous and discrete analysis. This book is an intro duction to the study of dynamic equations on time scales. Many results concerning differential equations carryover quite easily to corresponding results for difference equations, while other results seem to be completely different in nature from their continuous counterparts. The study of dynamic equations on time scales reveals such discrepancies, and helps avoid proving results twice, once for differential equa tions and once for difference equations. The general idea is to prove a result for a dynamic equation where the domain of the unknown function is a so-called time scale, which is an arbitrary nonempty closed subset of the reals.

Book Hardy Type Inequalities on Time Scales

Download or read book Hardy Type Inequalities on Time Scales written by Ravi P. Agarwal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to dynamic inequalities of Hardy type and extensions and generalizations via convexity on a time scale T. In particular, the book contains the time scale versions of classical Hardy type inequalities, Hardy and Littlewood type inequalities, Hardy-Knopp type inequalities via convexity, Copson type inequalities, Copson-Beesack type inequalities, Liendeler type inequalities, Levinson type inequalities and Pachpatte type inequalities, Bennett type inequalities, Chan type inequalities, and Hardy type inequalities with two different weight functions. These dynamic inequalities contain the classical continuous and discrete inequalities as special cases when T = R and T = N and can be extended to different types of inequalities on different time scales such as T = hN, h > 0, T = qN for q > 1, etc.In this book the authors followed the history and development of these inequalities. Each section in self-contained and one can see the relationship between the time scale versions of the inequalities and the classical ones. To the best of the authors’ knowledge this is the first book devoted to Hardy-typeinequalities and their extensions on time scales.

Book Stability Theory for Dynamic Equations on Time Scales

Download or read book Stability Theory for Dynamic Equations on Time Scales written by Anatoly A. Martynyuk and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a first in the world to present three approaches for stability analysis of solutions of dynamic equations. The first approach is based on the application of dynamic integral inequalities and the fundamental matrix of solutions of linear approximation of dynamic equations. The second is based on the generalization of the direct Lyapunovs method for equations on time scales, using scalar, vector and matrix-valued auxiliary functions. The third approach is the application of auxiliary functions (scalar, vector, or matrix-valued ones) in combination with differential dynamic inequalities. This is an alternative comparison method, developed for time continuous and time discrete systems. In recent decades, automatic control theory in the study of air- and spacecraft dynamics and in other areas of modern applied mathematics has encountered problems in the analysis of the behavior of solutions of time continuous-discrete linear and/or nonlinear equations of perturbed motion. In the book “Men of Mathematics,” 1937, E.T.Bell wrote: “A major task of mathematics today is to harmonize the continuous and the discrete, to include them in one comprehensive mathematics, and to eliminate obscurity from both.”Mathematical analysis on time scales accomplishes exactly this. This research has potential applications in such areas as theoretical and applied mechanics, neurodynamics, mathematical biology and finance among others.

Book Conformable Dynamic Equations on Time Scales

Download or read book Conformable Dynamic Equations on Time Scales written by Douglas R. Anderson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-29 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of derivatives of non-integer order, known as fractional derivatives, first appeared in the letter between L’Hopital and Leibniz in which the question of a half-order derivative was posed. Since then, many formulations of fractional derivatives have appeared. Recently, a new definition of fractional derivative, called the "fractional conformable derivative," has been introduced. This new fractional derivative is compatible with the classical derivative and it has attracted attention in areas as diverse as mechanics, electronics, and anomalous diffusion. Conformable Dynamic Equations on Time Scales is devoted to the qualitative theory of conformable dynamic equations on time scales. This book summarizes the most recent contributions in this area, and vastly expands on them to conceive of a comprehensive theory developed exclusively for this book. Except for a few sections in Chapter 1, the results here are presented for the first time. As a result, the book is intended for researchers who work on dynamic calculus on time scales and its applications. Features Can be used as a textbook at the graduate level as well as a reference book for several disciplines Suitable for an audience of specialists such as mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and biologists Contains a new definition of fractional derivative About the Authors Douglas R. Book Dynamic Equations on Time Scales

Download or read book Dynamic Equations on Time Scales written by Martin Bohner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-06-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of dynamic equations on a measure chain (time scale) goes back to its founder S. Hilger (1988), and is a new area of still fairly theoretical exploration in mathematics. Motivating the subject is the notion that dynamic equations on measure chains can build bridges between continuous and discrete mathematics. Further, the study of measure chain theory has led to several important applications, e.g., in the study of insect population models, neural networks, heat transfer, and epidemic models. Key features of the book: * Introduction to measure chain theory; discussion of its usefulness in allowing for the simultaneous development of differential equations and difference equations without having to repeat analogous proofs * Many classical formulas or procedures for differential and difference equations cast in a new light * New analogues of many of the "special functions" studied * Examination of the properties of the "exponential function" on time scales, which can be defined and investigated using a particularly simple linear equation * Additional topics covered: self-adjoint equations, linear systems, higher order equations, dynamic inequalities, and symplectic dynamic systems * Clear, motivated exposition, beginning with preliminaries and progressing to more sophisticated text * Ample examples and exercises throughout the book * Solutions to selected problems Requiring only a first semester of calculus and linear algebra, Dynamic Equations on Time Scales may be considered as an interesting approach to differential equations via exposure to continuous and discrete analysis. This approach provides an early encounter with many applications in such areas as biology, physics, and engineering. Parts of the book may be used in a special topics seminar at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate levels. Finally, the work may

Book Scaling of Differential Equations

Download or read book Scaling of Differential Equations written by Hans Petter Langtangen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book serves both as a reference for various scaled models with corresponding dimensionless numbers, and as a resource for learning the art of scaling. A special feature of the book is the emphasis on how to create software for scaled models, based on existing software for unscaled models. Scaling (or non-dimensionalization) is a mathematical technique that greatly simplifies the setting of input parameters in numerical simulations. Moreover, scaling enhances the understanding of how different physical processes interact in a differential equation model. Compared to the existing literature, where the topic of scaling is frequently encountered, but very often in only a brief and shallow setting, the present book gives much more thorough explanations of how to reason about finding the right scales. This process is highly problem dependent, and therefore the book features a lot of worked examples, from very simple ODEs to systems of PDEs, especially from fluid mechanics. The text is easily accessible and example-driven. The first part on ODEs fits even a lower undergraduate level, while the most advanced multiphysics fluid mechanics examples target the graduate level. The scientific literature is full of scaled models, but in most of the cases, the scales are just stated without thorough mathematical reasoning. This book explains how the scales are found mathematically. This book will be a valuable read for anyone doing numerical simulations based on ordinary or partial differential equations.

Book Frontiers In Time Scales And Inequalities

Download or read book Frontiers In Time Scales And Inequalities written by George A Anastassiou and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains the author's work of the last four years in discrete and fractional analysis. It introduces the right delta and right nabla fractional calculus on time scales and continues with the right delta and right nabla discrete fractional calculus in the Caputo sense. Then, it shows representation formulae of functions on time scales and presents Ostrowski type inequalities, Landau type inequalities, Grüss type and comparison of means inequalities, all these over time scales. The volume continues with integral operator inequalities and their multivariate vectorial versions using convexity of functions, again all these over time scales. It follows the Grüss and Ostrowski type inequalities involving s-convexity of functions; and also examines the general case when several functions are involved. Then, it presents the general fractional Hermite-Hadamard type inequalities using m-convexity and (s, m)-convexity. Finally, it introduces the reduction method in fractional calculus and its connection to fractional Ostrowski type inequalities is studied. This book's results are expected to find applications in many areas of pure and applied mathematics, especially in difference equations and fractional differential equations. The chapters are self-contained and can be read independently, and advanced courses can be taught out of it. It is suitable for researchers, graduate students, seminars of the above subjects, and serves well as an invaluable resource for all science libraries.
