Book Dynamic Growth of an Antiplane Shear Crack in a Rate Sensitive Elastic Plastic Material

Download or read book Dynamic Growth of an Antiplane Shear Crack in a Rate Sensitive Elastic Plastic Material written by LB. Freund and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical study of the dynamic steady-state antiplane shear (Mode III) crack growth process is described. The study is based on continuum mechanics, and the material is modeled as being elastic-viscoplastic. Using the small-scale yielding concept of fracture mechanics and allowing only for steady-state crack growth, but including the effects of material inertia explicitly, a full-field solution for the deformations is obtained by means of an iteration procedure involving the finite-element method. Numerical results for the strain distribution in the active plastic zone are presented. The fracture criterion for materials which fail in a locally ductile manner proposed by McClintock and Irwin [1],3 which stipulates that crack growth will proceed such that a critical strain level is maintained at a characteristic distance ahead of the crack tip, is adopted. This criterion is coupled with the results of numerical calculations to develop theoretical dynamic fracture toughness versus crack tip speed relationships for two levels of critical strain. For rate-dependent materials a range of toughness-versus-speed relations is manifested, ranging from that similar to rate-independent materials for low rate sensitivity to a relationship which rises dramatically for even a small increase in crack speed at low crack speeds, but which levels off for higher speeds for extremely rate-sensitive materials.

Book Crack Dynamics in Metallic Materials

Download or read book Crack Dynamics in Metallic Materials written by J.R. Klepaczko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date knowledge on theory and experimental results of rate-dependent fracture processes in metallic materials. The objective is to expose the current status of a growing branch of fracture mechanics called generally "Dynamic Fracture". Crack dynamics takes into account not only the effects of inertia but also rate sensitivity of a material under consideration. This volume has been prepared by four leading authorities in fracture dynamics: D.R. Curran, J.F. Kalthoff, J.R. Klepaczko and F. Nilsson. A broad range of problem is covered: dynamic fracture theory, application of dynamic fracture mechanics, dynamic crack inition and microstatistical fracture mechanics in dynamic fracture. The book in its present format may serve as a text supplement in lecturing on fracture mechanics. On the other hand, it may serve as an instructional aid in engineering of fracture prevention.

Book Advances in Fracture Research

Download or read book Advances in Fracture Research written by K. Salama and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 3063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Held every four years, the International Congress on Fracture is the premier international forum for the exchange of ideas between scientists and engineers involved in producing and using materials resistant to fracture and fatigue. This major six-volume work which forms the proceedings of the Seventh International Congress on Fracture therefore provides the most comprehensive account available of the current status of research into fracture and fatigue, and the application of this knowledge to the design, fabrication and operation of materials and structures. As such, it will be an essential reference for materials scientists and mechanical, structural, aeronautical and design engineers with an interest in fracture and its prevention.

Book Computational Methods in the Mechanics of Fracture

Download or read book Computational Methods in the Mechanics of Fracture written by Satya N. Atluri and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1986 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume not only covers the fundamental concepts of fracture mechanics, but also the computational methodologies necessary for practical engineering designs aimed at fracture control. It gives a concise summary of various fracture theories: linear elastic, elastic-plastic, and dynamic fracture mechanics of metals and composites. Novel numerical methods (finite element and boundary element) that enable the treatment of complicated engineering problems are emphasized. Examined are problems of linear elastic fracture of metallic and non-metallic composite materials, three-dimensional problems of surface flaws, elastic-plastic fracture, stable crack growth, and dynamic crack propagation. A comprehensive outline of the energetic approach and energy integrals on fracture mechanics is also given. Contents: Preface. Parts: I. Chapters: 1. Fracture: Mechanics or Art? (F. Erdogan). II. 2. Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (A.S. Kobayashi). 3. Elastic-Plastic Fracture (Quasi-Static) (S.N. Atluri and A.S. Kobayashi). 4. Dynamic Crack Propagation in Solids (L.B. Freund). 5. Energetic Approaches and Path-Independent Integrals in Fracture Mechanics (S.N. Atluri). III. 6.
