Book Dynamic Fracture Behavior of a Structural Steel

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Behavior of a Structural Steel written by K. Cho and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture experiments are described in which stress wave loading is employed to attain a stress intensity rate of about 2 • 106 MPa ?m/s. The specimens consisted of prefatigued notched round bars of a high strength, low alloy martensitic steel. The tests covered the temperature range -150°C to 200°C. Comparison is made with corresponding results of quasistatic tests on specimens of the same geometry as well as with results of other investigators who tested similar steels. The present steel contains manganese sulfide inclusions in the form of stringers and globules. Their role in the fracture process is examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy.

Book Dynamic Fracture Behavior of Structural Materials

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Behavior of Structural Materials written by J. H. Giovanola and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results of a program to improve understanding of dynamic fracture behavior by investigating both crack tip loading conditions and material properties for fracture at high loading rates. A new test procedure, the one-point-bend test was analyzed and further developed the test a wide range of materials at impact loading rates. The test uses inertial loading to load the crack tip and affords an unambiguous measurement of the dynamic initiation toughness. The test's usefulness in producing small controlled increments of crack extension and in crack propagation studies was also demonstrated. Moreover, the concept of inertial loading was extended to study dynamic mixed- mode crack initiation under controlled mixed mode I and II conditions. These new test techniques were used to establish the dynamic fracture behavior of 4340 steel (HRC 50). It was shown that, for loading times to fracture as short as 20 microsecs, no time-modified criterion is necessary to predict crack initiation. The classical fracture criterion equating the applied stress intensity to the dynamic fracture toughness is adequate, provided the dynamically applied stress intensity is correctly evaluated. Under mixed mode I and II loading with (k sub II)/(k sub I) values between 0 and 0.5, it was demonstrated that dynamic crack initiation is essentially controlled by the mode I stress intensity and by the mode I dynamic fracture toughness.

Download or read book Dynamics of Fracture written by N. Morozov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-03-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book a new phenomenological approach to brittle medium fracture initiation under shock pulses is developped. It provides an opportunity to estimate fracture of media with and without macrodefects. A qualitative explanation is thus obtained for a number of principally important effects of high-speed dynamic fracture that cannot be clarified within the framework of previous approaches. It is possible to apply this new strategy to resolve applied problems of disintegration, erosion, and dynamic strength determination of structural materials. Specialists can use the methods described to determine critical characteristics of dynamic strength and optimal effective fracture conditions for rigid bodies. This book can also be used as a special educational course on deformation of materials and constructions, and fracture mechanics.

Book Determination of Dynamic Fracture Behavior in 4340 Steel Compact Crack Arrest Specimens Using Birefringent Coatings and Finite Element Analysis

Download or read book Determination of Dynamic Fracture Behavior in 4340 Steel Compact Crack Arrest Specimens Using Birefringent Coatings and Finite Element Analysis written by DB. Barker and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A split-birefringent coating technique, coupled with high-speed photography, was used to record the dynamic isochromatic fringe pattern associated with crack propagation and arrest in 4340 steel compact crack arrest fracture specimens. From the data contained in the isochromatic fringe patterns, the associated dynamic stress-intensity factor was calculated in two different ways. First, the dynamic stress-intensity factor was calculated from the isochromatic fringe information directly. Next, the isochromatic fringe patterns were used to obtain a crack position history which was used for input to a two-dimensional dynamic finite-element code used in the "generation mode." These two dynamic stress-intensity factors were compared with each other and with the crack arrest toughness as calculated by the proposed ASTM method for estimating crack arrest toughness.

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture written by K. Ravi-Chandar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-16 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture

Book Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures written by Arun Shukla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures discusses the topic of dynamic loadings and their effect on material and structural failure. Since dynamic loading problems are very difficult as compared to their static counterpart, very little information is currently available about dynamic behavior of materials and structures. Topics covered include the response of both metallic as well as polymeric composite materials to blast loading and shock loadings, impact loadings and failure of novel materials under more controlled dynamic loads. These include response of soft materials that are important in practical use but have very limited information available on their dynamic response. Dynamic fragmentation, which has re-emerged in recent years has also been included. Both experimental as well as numerical aspects of material and structural response to dynamic loads are discussed. Written by several key experts in the field, Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures will appeal to graduate students and researchers studying dynamic loadings within mechanical and civil engineering, as well as in physics and materials science.

Book The Influence of Specimen Size on the Fracture Behavior of a Structural Steel at Different Temperatures

Download or read book The Influence of Specimen Size on the Fracture Behavior of a Structural Steel at Different Temperatures written by LT. Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad experimental study was carried out in order to analyze the influence of different geometrical parameters (thickness, width, and crack length) and temperature on the fracture behavior of a structural steel. The J-integral versus crack growth resistance curves (J-R curves) were determined using indirect measurements of the crack size based on the variation of the specimen compliance, together with the physical determination of crack lengths obtained during testing using a color marking procedure. This last technique allows the reliability and accuracy of the data to be improved and provides additional information that can be used to reduce the typical scatter of the results. Only the initial crack size of the specimen has an influence on the J-R behavior of the steel due to the triaxiality modification of the crack tip stress state developed in the specimen. On the other hand, the J-R curve of the steel is also independent of temperature. Temperature affects only the J values at which cleavage or unstable fracture takes place.

Book Fracture of Structural Materials Under Dynamic Loading

Download or read book Fracture of Structural Materials Under Dynamic Loading written by Donald A. Shockey and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical concepts of Griffith-Irwin fracture mechanics were extended to include time effects and hence to apply to crack instability under dynamic loads. Theoretical considerations of the stress intensity histories experienced by cracks subjected to short pulse loads suggested that instability requires the crack tip stress intensity to exceed the dynamic toughness for a minimum time. This postulate was checked by experiments. Impact techniques were used to produce well-defined stress pulses in specimens of an epoxy, 4340 steel, 1018 steel, and 6061-T6 aluminum containing cracks of several lengths to observe crack instability behavior. The experimental results were not well described by static fracture mechanics, but were in accord with the minimum time postulates deduced from stress intensity histories. The understanding gained from the research program promises to be useful in assessing the safety of structures under dynamic loads, in characterizing the dynamic fracture resistance of materials, and in designing equipment and procedures for measuring dynamic fracture toughness. The relationship between dynamic initiation toughness and dynamic propagation toughness was addressed. The temperature histories in material near a rapidly propagating crack in a steel plate were measured and used to compute the heat of fracture and the dynamic propagation toughness. Simultaneous measurements of the dynamic stress intensity were made using the shadow optical method of caustics and high speed photography.

Book Handbook of Structural Life Assessment

Download or read book Handbook of Structural Life Assessment written by Raouf A. Ibrahim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 1016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important, self-contained reference deals with structural life assessment (SLA) and structural health monitoring (SHM) in a combined form. SLA periodically evaluates the state and condition of a structural system and provides recommendations for possible maintenance actions or the end of structural service life. It is a diversified field and relies on the theories of fracture mechanics, fatigue damage process, and reliability theory. For common structures, their life assessment is not only governed by the theory of fracture mechanics and fatigue damage process, but by other factors such as corrosion, grounding, and sudden collision. On the other hand, SHM deals with the detection, prediction, and location of crack development online. Both SLA and SHM are combined in a unified and coherent treatment.
