This invention is one of the most novel developments of modern steam engineering. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Duty and Capacity Tests of Worthington High Duty Pumping Engines on Water Works and Pipe Line Services The history of the Worthington Pumping Engine dating from its invention in 1840 to its present state of development. has been frequently set before the public. In this brief review, containing a collection of duty and capacity tests, we merely desire further to emphasize the fact that not until the year 1884 was a "cut-off "ever used effectively in a direct-acting non-rotative engine. In that year it was first used in connection with the "High-duty attachment," illustrated and described in many of the reports contained in this volume. Duplex Triple Expansion Worthington Pumping Engine: Thesis While a pump is a very simple mechanism and does not seem a very important factor in the world's progress, yet when one stops to enumerate the different occupations that can be car ried on without the aid of a pump in some form or other, he is at once surprised at the smallness of the figure. Were it not for the pump the live - etock on our farms would perish in the summer while the city would never reach any great size until fire would claim it as a victim. It is this wide scope of util ity that has developed the pump into one of the most important of machines, and without it a great handicap would be placed on every industry. Book excerpt: A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling. The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three. Taught everywhere—from high school classrooms to graduate seminars in creative writing—it has become required reading for any American and continues to challenge readers in their perceptions of fact and fiction, war and peace, courage and fear and longing. The Things They Carried won France's prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize; it was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Book Hard Times and New Deal in Kentucky

Download or read book Hard Times and New Deal in Kentucky written by George T. Blakey and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Depression and the New Deal touched the lives of almost every Kentuckian during the 1930s. Fifty years later the Commonwealth is still affected by the legacies of that era and the policies of the Roosevelt administration. George T. Blakey has written the first full study of this turbulent decade in Kentucky, and he offers a fresh perspective on the New Deal programs by viewing them from the local and state level rather than from Washington. Thousands of Kentuckians worked for New Deal programs such as the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Projects Administration; thousands more kept their homes through loans from the Home Owners Loan Corporation. Tobacco growers adopted new production techniques and rural farms received their first electricity because of the Agricultural Adjustment and Rural Electrification administrations. The New Deal stretched from the Harlan County coal mines to a TVA dam near Paducah, and it encompassed subjects as small as Social Security pension checks and as large as revived Bourbon distilleries. The impact of these phenomena on Kentucky was both beneficial and disruptive, temporary and enduring. Blakey analyzes the economic effects of this unprecedented and massive government spending to end the depression. He also discusses the political arena in which Governors Laffoon, Chandler, and Johnson had to wrestle with new federal rules. And he highlights social changes the New Deal brought to the Commonwealth: accelerated urbanization, enlightened land use, a lessening of state power and individualism, and a greater awareness of Kentucky history. Hard Times and New Deal weaves together private memories of older Kentuckians and public statements of contemporary politicians; it includes legislative debates and newspaper accounts, government statistics and personal reminiscences. The result is a balanced and fresh look at the patchwork of emergency and reform activities which many people loved, many others hated, but no one could ignore.
