Book excerpt: A morose provincial inspector of roads in Aragon settles down to write the fable of the Snow Queen. The Netherlands has now been stretched into a vast country with Northern flatlands and hazardous Alpine ranges in the south. Kai and Lucia are circus illusionists, and when Kai is kidnapped, Lucia must rescue him from the Snow Queen's palace. In the Dutch Mountains is an elegantly constructed story within a story, laced with the wit that characterises the work of this outstanding European writer.

Book InterActions

  • Author : Charlotte Gruber
  • Publisher : Tectum Wissenschaftsverlag
  • Release : 2013-06-11
  • ISBN : 3828857884
  • Pages : 99 pages

Download or read book InterActions written by Charlotte Gruber and published by Tectum Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do famous 20th century thinkers like Hannah Arendt, Guy Debord and Henri Lefebvre have to offer for a critical performance analysis today? Charlotte Gruber has taken a fresh look at their writings with respect to this question. In "InterActions" she applies her findings to the analysis of more than 12 contemporary artworks from different fields. In doing so she tackles two dominant developments in the Performing Arts: The ongoing trend to actively engage performance-participants in the performance process, and the tendency to leave common theatre buildings for innovative venues. Assisted by recent approaches from Media Studies, she scrutinizes the employment of new networking media. Her study reveals: Not only the Performing Arts but also other fields of art (Streetart, Visual Arts etc.) have to be considered for their performative potential and their extensive socio-political range. Gruber questions the term Site-Specific Art for its insufficiency to articulate this potential, which she sees in the creation, reinvention and reappropriation of public spaces. This thesis was awarded the TIN Theaterscriptieprijs 2012 by the Theater Institute of the Netherlands.

Book Relational Methods in Computer Science

Download or read book Relational Methods in Computer Science written by Chris Brink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calculus of relations has been an important component of the development of logic and algebra since the middle of the nineteenth century, when Augustus De Morgan observed that since a horse is an animal we should be able to infer that the head of a horse is the head of an animal. For this, Aristotelian syllogistic does not suffice: We require relational reasoning. George Boole, in his Mathematical Analysis of Logic of 1847, initiated the treatment of logic as part of mathematics, specifically as part of algebra. Quite the opposite conviction was put forward early this century by Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead in their Principia Mathematica (1910 - 1913): that mathematics was essentially grounded in logic. Logic thus developed in two streams. On the one hand algebraic logic, in which the calculus of relations played a particularly prominent part, was taken up from Boole by Charles Sanders Peirce, who wished to do for the "calculus of relatives" what Boole had done for the calculus of sets. Peirce's work was in turn taken up by Schroder in his Algebra und Logik der Relative of 1895 (the third part of a massive work on the algebra of logic). Schroder's work, however, lay dormant for more than 40 years, until revived by Alfred Tarski in his seminal paper "On the calculus of binary relations" of 1941 (actually his presidential address to the Association for Symbolic Logic).

Download or read book Missing Links written by Jonneke Bekkenkamp and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2000 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are there "missing links", links that are "easy to miss" between art and religion and between the ways in which they respond to or partake of reality? The hypothesis of this anthology is that these in fact do exist and its authors explore these links on the basis of a specific text or oeuvre, a specific artwork or exhibition. Following an introductory essay exploring the discussion on relating art and religion, there are artides on Jannis Kounellis and Andrew Forster, on plays by William Shakespeare, Gerard Jan Rijnders and Anny van Hoof, on an exhibition curated by Julia Kristeva. There is an analysis of a novel by Frederic Buechner and one of the autobiographical writings of Dorothy Day. Poems of M. Vasalis and Judith Herzberg are considered, along with the music of Olivier Messiaen and Plato's dialogue 'Sophist'.
