Book excerpt: We know far less about the other residents of the camps. Although occasionally toughed upon, the attitudes of those Americans who administered or worked in them are rarely the focus of the relocation literature. It is the great virtue of Catherine Harris's memoir that it offers a very personal "report from the camps" about what it was like from the other side as a teacher in one of them. Her forthright account sparkles with dry wit and burns with righteous indignation by turn, shining an achingly human light on an outrageously inhuman situation.

Book Dust in the Blood

  • Author : Jessica Coblentz
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 2022-01-15
  • ISBN : 0814685021
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Dust in the Blood written by Jessica Coblentz and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust in the Blood considers the harrowing realities of life with depression from a Christian theological perspective. In conversation with popular Christian theologies of depression that justify why this suffering exists and prescribe how people ought to relate to it, Coblentz offers another Christian approach to this condition: she reflects on depression as a wilderness experience. Weaving first-person narratives of depression, contemporary theologies of suffering, and ancient biblical tales of the wilderness, especially the story of Hagar, Coblentz argues for and contributes to an expansion of Christian ideas about what depression is, how God relates to it, and how Christians should understand and respond to depression in turn.

Book excerpt: In this highly anticipated second book in the Talents Trilogy, the world of the dead is closer than you think. Agrigento, Sicily, 1883. With the orsine destroyed, Cairndale lies in ruins, and Marlowe has vanished. His only hope of rescue lies in a fabled second orsine—long-hidden, thought lost—which might not even exist. But when a body is discovered in the shadow of Cairndale, a body wreathed in the corrupted dust of the drughr, Charlie and the Talents realize there is even more at stake than they'd feared. For a new drughr has arisen, ferocious, horned, seemingly able to move in their world at will—and it is not alone. A malevolent figure, known only as the Abbess, desires the dust for her own ends. And deep in the world of the dead, a terrible evil stirs—an evil that the corrupted dust just might hold the secret to reviving or destroying forever. So the dark journey begun in Ordinary Monsters surges forward, from the sinister underworld of the London exiles, to the mysteries of a sunlit villa in nineteenth-century Sicily, to the deep catacombs hidden under Paris. Against bone witches, mud glyphics, and a house of twilight that exists in a netherworld all its own, the Talents must work together—if they are to have any hope of staving off the world of the dead, and saving their long-lost friend.

Book I Am Your Dust

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gali Drucker Bar-Am
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2024-11-05
  • ISBN : 0253071526
  • Pages : 394 pages

Download or read book I Am Your Dust written by Gali Drucker Bar-Am and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel's cultural space is frequently studied as if it were synonymous with the Hebrew-Israeli one. But within the borders of Israel, a fascinating culture was (and continues to be) created in many languages other than Hebrew, reflecting its reality from angles that the makers of Hebrew-Israeli culture did not know and all too often lacked the tools to express. I Am Your Dust: Representations of the Israeli Experience in Yiddish Prose, 1948–1967 expands the boundaries of current studies of Israel's cultural history by presenting and analyzing Yiddish-Israeli prose written during the country's first two decades as an independent state. It offers a comprehensive study of that unique, and hitherto little understood, literature, a detailed historical documentation of the contexts of its production, and an eye-opening comparison of its themes to the more familiar outputs of Hebrew-Israeli prose. I Am Your Dust is the first socioliterary investigation of Yiddish-Israeli culture, and it explores how Yiddish-Israeli writers played a vital role in shaping the country's cultural identity in its early years.

Book excerpt: For almost three decades, Cormac McCarthy solidified his reputation as an American "writer's writer" with remarkable novels such as his Appalachian Tales, The Orchard Keeper, Outer Dark, Child of God, Suttree, and his terrifying Western masterpiece, Blood Meridian. Then, with the publication of All the Pretty Horses, the first work of his celebrated Border Trilogy in 1992, McCarthy's popularity exploded on to a world stage. As his reputation burgeoned with the publications of The Crossing and Cities of the Plain, the critical response to McCarthy has grown apace.

Book From the Dust of the Earth

Download or read book From the Dust of the Earth written by Matthew J. Ramage and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The claim that evolution undermines Christianity is standard fare in our culture. Indeed, many today have the impression that the two are mutually exclusive and that a choice must be made between faith and reason—rejecting Christianity on the one hand or evolutionary theory on the other. Is there a way to square advances in this field of study with the Bible and Church teaching? In this book—his fourth dedicated to applying Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI’s wisdom to pressing theological difficulties—Matthew Ramage answers this question decidedly in the affirmative. Distinguishing between evolutionary theory properly speaking and the materialist attitude that is often conflated with it, Ramage’s work meets the challenge of evolutionary science to Catholic teaching on human origins, guided by Ratzinger’s conviction that faith and evolutionary theory mutually enrich one another. Pope Benedict gifted the Church with many pivotal yet often-overlooked resources for engaging evolution in the light of faith, especially in those instances where he addressed the topic in connection with the Book of Genesis. Ramage highlights these contributions and also makes his own by applying Ratzinger’s principles to such issues as the meaning of man’s special creation, the relationship between sin and death, and the implications of evolution for eschatology. Notably, Ramage shows that many apparent conflicts between Christianity and evolutionary theory lose their force when we interpret creation in light of the Paschal Mystery and fix our gaze on Jesus, the New Adam who reveals man to himself. Readers of this text will find that it does more than merely help to resolve apparent contradictions between faith and modern science. Ramage’s work shows that discoveries in evolutionary biology are not merely difficulties to be overcome but indeed gifts that yield precious insight into the mystery of God’s saving plan in Christ.

Book From Ashes to Angel S Dust

Download or read book From Ashes to Angel S Dust written by Zoe Flowers and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many young women, Zo Flowers found herself in a dangerous relationship in her early twenties. Flowers ended the relationship after a short time, but the experience motivated her to be a catalyst for real change. She started conducting candid interviews with women about their experiences with domestic, dating, and sexual violence. From Ashes to Angels Dust: A Journey Through Womanhood is the book that emerged from those early interviews. From Ashes to Angels Dust: A Journey Through Womanhood is a unique collection of candid interviews, national resources, healing techniques, and Zos poetry. From Ashes to Angels Dust: A Journey Through Womanhood is the story of our mothers, sisters, and grandmothers. Dear Zo, the book was wonderful! I shared it with a couple of my colleagues. I could see myself in several of the scenariospainful to recall. How in the world could any of us get ourselves into such sad and often brutal situations? Reading your book was like being in the midst of a motion picture. You captured so much pain. Thanks so much for touching my life - however briefly. May God protect you as you start your new journey. Stay free and HAPPY! Pauline M. Two weeks ago at our Saturday School in Soweto, we read one of the stories in the book about Lois and Brian. It really struck a familiar cord with our 50 high school students. After reading the short story, it was a great vehicle to talk about abuse. Again, thank you. Your book is helping many young lives here in Soweto, South Africa. Stay blessed Jose B.

Download or read book Remember You Are Dust written by Walter Brueggemann and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Walter Brueggemann is the master of finding fresh and compelling dimensions of meaning in texts so familiar they barely scratch the surface of our consciousness. In this exciting collection, Brueggemann finds that when we admit we are dust, we can be liberated. Why? Because we are free from acting like God. We are free to choose obedience to the one living, true Sovereign. The idols lose their grip on us and we live faithfully and in authentic joy." --Ronald J. Allen, Christian Theological Seminary "According to Walter Brueggemann, the autonomy, secularity, and individualism that characterize modernity have 'exiled' the contemporary believer. Always concerned with the manner in which one is to live in the world, he argues for a subversive imagination similar to that found in the biblical wisdom writings, the Psalms, and the Prophets. One comes away from this book both energized by the vision presented and challenged to make it a reality." --Dianne Bergant, Catholic Theological Union in Chicago "There is a reason why Walter Brueggemann remains, for preachers and pastors, the most loved and trusted of all biblical scholars--and that is simply because he writes for us. In every season and heartbreak of life and ministry, he writes for us. And over the years, we have come to see that when Brueggemann goes to the text before God, with his signature passion, candor, and ferocious energy, he goes not for our enlightenment or edification, but for our life and for his. Read this book and take off your shoes, because you will enter onto holy ground." --Anna Carter Florence, Columbia Theological Seminary

Book excerpt: This book has been in the making for about twenty years now, although it only took a bit over a year to write it; in one form or another it had always coexisted with my daily thoughts, never letting me forget that it was there, just waiting for the right time to be incarnated. That time, that right time is now. After a very long time, and through adversities too many to enumerate, against all odds, I am finally able to bring you the book. This is the first volume in a trilogy I call Dust in the Wind. Book two entitled In Exile and book three entitled Coming to America will follow soon. Although this book is a work of fiction, it is based on real events that took place in Romania between December 1989 and July 1990. This book is a tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives in December 1989, because they believed in freedom, democracy, and the triumph of the human spirit, to the . . . oh so many . . . their number as of yet still unknown, victims of the events of 13-15 of June, 1990, to the countless ordinary people who never had a fair shake, to the ones left behind, but never forgotten.

"From Dust to Snow: Bush-Faller" chronicles the true-life experiences of (Bush-Fallers) Africans (primarily Cameroonians), in Europe and the United States. Featuring more than twenty accounts from students, asylum seekers and the employed, contributors in this work of 'edutainment' ferry you through their experiences, first-hand, from the moment the idea of traveling overseas was conceived, through departure emotions, first impressions upon arrival, culture shock, hardships, comic moments, high points of each life, and even re-entry shock, including deportation. One way or the other, you should find yourself on one of the pages of this book, either as a foreigner or as a host. Prepare yourself for what is about to happen; Discover the African Dream, a Dream far bigger than Bush-falling.
