It is imperative that practical and theoretical knowledge of the origin, development, prevention and mitigation of dust explosions is imparted to the responsible safety manager. The material in this book offers an up to date evaluation of prevalent activities, testing methods, design measures and safe operating techniques. Also provided is a detailed and comprehensive critique of all the significant phases relating to the hazard and control of a dust explosion. An invaluable reference work for industry, safety consultants and students. A completely new chapter on design of electrical equipment to be used in areas containing combustible/explosible dust A substantially extended and re-organized final review chapter, containing nearly 400 new literature references from the years 1997-2002 Extensive cross-referencing from the original chapters 1-7 to the corresponding sections of the expanded review chapter

Book Dust Explosions

Download or read book Dust Explosions written by Jean Cross and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest of the media in dust explosions increased considerably following two major grain-elevator disasters in the United States in 1979. However, these were not isolated incidents and were statistically unusual only in the high loss of life involved. Any oxidizable material that is dispersed in fine powder form may be explosive, and ignition sources with sufficient energy to ignite a dust cloud are easily produced in normal industrial processing. Dust fires and minor incidents are not uncommon in many industries, but fortunately the combination of events and circumstances that must coincide for a large-scale explosion arise only rarely. Nevertheless, this is often more by luck than by good management and many potentially hazardous situations are common in industry. An explosive dust cloud and the circumstances in which it can ignite are not as simple to define as the equivalent situation in gases or flammable vapors. A large number of definitions and experimental tests have been devised to characterize the explosibility of dusts and ignition sources. The aim of this book is to provide a guide describing conditions in industry that could lead to dust explosions and the means to avoid them. Ignition sources and the way in which they can arise in powder processing are discussed and illustrated by case histories of reported incidents. The methods by which the potential hazards of a process or product can be evaluated are described, with special attention paid to the interpretation of the results of the different experimental methods.

Book Electrical and Instrumentation Safety for Chemical Processes

Download or read book Electrical and Instrumentation Safety for Chemical Processes written by R.J. Buschart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is about electrical and instrumentation safety for chemical proc esses. It covers a wide area of electrical and electronic phenomena and how they have and can significantly affect the safety of chemical processes. The importance of the subject is well known to anyone involved in the operation of chemical processes. Lightning strikes can explode storage tanks, shut down electrical power systems, and shut down or damage computer and instrument systems. Static electricity can ignite flammable materials and damage sensitive elec tronic process control equipment. Electrical power system failures or inter ruptions can produce unsafe process conditions. Chemical processes use flammable and combustible vapors, gases, or dusts that can be exploded by electrical equipment and wiring. Even low-energy equipment like flashlights can ignite a flammable vapor. Interlock and equipment protection systems can cause safety problems. How important is electrical and process control safety? A survey on "How Safe is Your Plant?", in the April 1988 issue of Chemical Engineer ing magazine, provided some answers. Among the results of this survey of chemical processes, it was found that over 800 respondents believed instru mentation and controls, shutdown systems, equipment interlocks, and other protection systems to be the least safe aspect of chemical industries. The survey also indicated that complying with OSHA and other regula tions, process control software security, inspections, audits, and safety training are important safety issues.

Book excerpt: This book provides plant managers, supervisors, safety professionals, and industrial hygienists with recommended procedures and guidance for safe entry into confined spaces. It reviews selected case histories of confined space accidents, including multiple fatalities, and discusses how a confined space entry program could have prevented them. It outlines the requirements of the OSHA permit-entry confined space standard and provides detailed explanations of requirements for lockout/tagout, air sampling, ventilation, emergency planning, and employee training. The book is filled with more than 100 line drawings and more than 150 photographs.

Book The National Toxicology Program s Chemical Database

Download or read book The National Toxicology Program s Chemical Database written by Lawrence H. Keith and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-12-31 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This database provides a vast amount of information about potentially toxic chemicals to regulatory and research agencies, consultants, academics, and libraries. The National Toxicology Program's Chemical Database consists of eight volumes containing 50 fields that present detailed information on 2,270 different chemicals. The data is obtained from the literature or experimentally determined. Each compound is listed in every volume even when there is no information available for it in some volumes. Information in the NTP database was gathered and updated as compounds were used throughout a 12 year period from 1979 to 1991. Throughout the eight volumes, the primary chemical name and the Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CAS No.) remain constant and all 2,270 chemicals are listed alphabetically in each volume. The NTP database can be sold as a set or individually. Each volume consists of one 3-1/2" and two 5-1/4" diskettes , in addition to a 64 page manual that describes how to use the software. Diskettes will run on IBM® or IBM-compatible equipment with DOS 2.0 and higher, 640K internal memory (RAM), and a hard drive with at least 2-17MB of available disk space. Use the eight volumes together to get the full benefit of the NTP Chemical Repository Database, or select only those volumes that contain the information you need and use them as stand-alone databases. Each volume consists of one 3-1/2" and two 5-1/4" diskettes, that will run on IBM or IBM-compatible hardware!
