Book Haynes Apperson and America s First Practical Automobile

Download or read book Haynes Apperson and America s First Practical Automobile written by W. C. Madden and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Elwood Haynes and the Apperson brothers are not as well known as Henry Ford, Ransom Olds and other famous automobile manufacturers, their contributions to the automotive industry are just as significant. They were responsible for one of the first functioning automobiles, if not the first, in the United States. After building their automobile in 1894, the three men formed the Haynes-Apperson Automobile Company in Kokomo, Indiana, one of the first car manufacturing companies in the country. Three years after incorporation, a dispute over money caused the partnership to split up and Edgar and Elmer Apperson formed their own company. Both companies lasted until the mid-1920s. This book is a history of these automotive pioneers and their companies: the Haynes-Apperson Automobile Company, the Haynes Automobile Company, and the Apperson Brothers Automobile Company. It is richly illustrated with photographs of the factories, automobiles, personalities and advertisements.

Book Carriages Without Horses

Download or read book Carriages Without Horses written by Richard P Scharchburg and published by SAE International. This book was released on 1993-08-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1893, little could 23-year-old mechanic J. Frank Duryea dream of the changes that would be brought about by his creation -- a frail gasoline buggy that made its debut on the streets of Springfield, Massachusetts. Charles E. and J. Frank Duryea, two brothers from rural Illinois, were the founders of the American automobile industry. The Duryea Motor Wagon company was the first company organized in the United States for the manufacture of automobiles. The attention-getting, older brother Charles demanded - and to date has received - the principal credit for these pioneering accomplishments. A bitter family feud between the brothers, which was even carried on by their families after their deaths, further muddied the question about the individual brothers' contributions. However, in Carriages Without Horses: J. Frank Duryea and the Birth of the American Automobile Industry, historian and author Richard P. Scharchburg proves that the quiet, self-effacing younger brother J. Frank Duryea is unquestionably entitled to as much credit as Charles, if not considerably more. J. Frank did the actual work of construction on the cars, and was responsible for the practical designing and engineering of all components (aside from the steering mechanism) of the Duryea cars. More than an account of the struggle for precedence between brothers, however, Carriages Without Horses tells the story of America's first automobile company taking shape. Scharchburg covers the design and development of the first Duryea car, culminating with its successful operation on the streets of Springfield, Massachusetts on September 21, 1893. This book also covers: the landmark Chicago Times-Herald race of 1895, won by the Duryea car built and driven by J. Frank; the subsequent progress of the Duryea Motor Wagon Company; and, after the brothers went their separate ways, J. Frank's 1901 founding of the Stevens-Duryea Company.

Book History of the Electric Automobile

Download or read book History of the Electric Automobile written by Ernest Henry Wakefield and published by SAE International. This book was released on 1993-08-01 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of the Electric Automobile covers the evolution from the first electric vehicles of the 1880s to the advances of today. Beginning with early electric vehicle development in England, France, and the United States, this book provides an in-depth look at the so-called "golden age of electric vehicles" (1895-1905), demonstrating the technological improvements and business risks of this era. This history also explores the "dead period" of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and the subsequent re-birth of interest in electric vehicles in the early 1960s. Events which have impacted the development of electric cars since then -- most notably the Electric Vehicle Act of 1976 -- are also examined. The book also features an appendix section containing such information as a name table of American electric cars, the Electric Vehicle Act of 1976, "nostalgia", and more. A glossary and index are also included. "For more than a century, nearly all seers who have predicted the role of electric vehicles in personal transportation have been wrong. This book records what actually happened, both within America and internationally." - Ernest H. Wakefield

Book American Automobiles of the Brass Era

Download or read book American Automobiles of the Brass Era written by Robert D. Dluhy and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Abbott-Detroit to Zip, this unique reference book documents American gasoline-powered automobiles manufactured for the model years 1906 through 1915, the Brass Era. In these explosive early years of automotive history, a vast number of manufacturers--most of which failed within two years--produced a range of cars whose sheer diversity is unmatched in later times. The short corporate lifespans and constant change throughout the industry left a fragmented historical record, with data about specific models scarce and scattered in later sources. Here the basic facts of 4,000+ cars, painstakingly researched in all available period sources, are collected and trends of the era are analyzed.

Download or read book Percival Lowell s Big Red Car written by William Lowell Putnam and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 2002-08-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of one car --a 1911 Stevens-Duryea Model Y "Big Six" -- and its famous owner, Percival Lowell, the American astronomer best known for his studies of Mars and mathematical prediction of the discovery of Pluto. The narrative follows the vehicle, a product of Frank Duryea -- of the pioneering Duryea brothers -- through its time with Lowell and through subsequent owners to its present status as a moving landmark of history. Important developments in the early history of the gasoline-powered automobile are traced to establish the context in which this remarkable vehicle was created. The community in which the Duryea brothers labored, in short-lived teamwork, and their role in the evolution of the automobile industry are discussed. The text also provides an intimate look at the life of one of America's most important astronomers.

Book Automobile Manufacturers Worldwide Registry

Download or read book Automobile Manufacturers Worldwide Registry written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind reference work provides essential data on some 10,700 manufacturers of automobiles, beginning with the earliest vehicle that might be so termed (Frenchman Nicolas Cugnot's steam carriage, in 1770) and covering all nations in which automobiles have been built--67 in all. Not an encyclopedia or collection of histories, this is instead a very complete registry providing essential facts about the manufacturers: complete name, location, years active, type(s) of vehicles built, and other basic data. Compiled during more than 30 years of research, this reference even lists companies that produced just one car. Any builder of passenger-carrying vehicles on at least two but no more than eight wheels, of any design, either mass produced or built as one-off specials, experimental cars, prototypes, or kit cars, is included. Builders of internal combustion, steam and electric powered vehicles are all covered; companies that built only trucks, buses, racing cars, or motorcycles are not included. From A.A.A. to Zzipper and Argentina to Yugoslavia, this is an astonishingly comprehensive resource.
